I've got a test installation installed on a Windows Server 2008 VM and due to security, I can't access the internet. I initially built it at home to avoid the firewall problems but now I need to update some customize the css and I'm running into problems as maven wants to update packages and it can't get to the internet. We're running NTLM authentication so I doubt there's a way to get it to authenticate and running maven with the "-o" offline option isn't working. Any suggestions on how to get around this? See http://www.postgresql.org/docs/8.2/static/app-createdb.html for more details. The command would be createdb -U [databaseuser] -E UNICODE [databasename] e.g. createdb -U dspace -E UNICODE dspace if both the dbuser and the dbname are dspace If your db cluster got initialized with LATIN1 encoding (either explicitly by using -e or indirctly via the locales) a newly created db inherits the encoding unless otherwise specified, see: http://www.postgresql.org/docs/8.2/static/app-initdb.html Hope that helps Claudia H?ctor Garcia Peris schrieb: > I think the problem is related with the codification. First, I'm wondering how folks are using the per-collection copyright and license fields. Second, I'm wondering if anyone has developed any legalese to cover the case of someone using a repository to host material under the fair-use provisions of copyright law - e.g. by implementing appropriate access restrictions, etc. Third, how do you deal with the potential difference between how a copyright holder (or a proxy) may license a work to the college/university vs. how they license it to repository end-users. That will be efficient to define the service model of the repository first. And OAIS documnet will come in handy for starting such systems and building a policy for a digital library. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Archival_Information_System Installing Dspace by a Linux technician is not a time-taking task. Having the hardware ready, compiling and installing Dspace can be done in less than 5 hours (if everything goes well) Configuring Dspace is again depends on your needs for your digital repository. In our case and in our institution we had a great deal of java programming because of I18N and L10N. The scale of modification you want to make to Dspace, will give you the time you need for Java programming. I think Dspace can be used for a majority of libraries just out of the box. It depends on environment where you want to install i.e on live or on local. It requires some set of pre-requisite softwares. Then you also require internet to get dspace installed. 3) configuring to get your repository up and ready for use? Once installation is ready configuraion will not take much time let it can be done within on man hour. 4) How many hours of java programming were required if any? By default, no java programming are required , but if you need any customizations , then it depends on type of customization work. We are getting to the point we're we are building full DSpace machines (Linux/Apache/Postgresql/Tomcat/DSpace) with bash and PHP scripts. If everything goes well, the script can complete in around 30 minutes to an hour. Configuration will be an ongoing process; it'll depend on what you want to achieve with it. At its simplest you could just create a community and collection and dump everything in there. Planning, again, will depend on what you want to achieve. It leeds to trouble (misinformation) if you got multiple bitstreams and/or delete/change existing bitstreams. E. g. you got the files: foo1 foo2 and the 4 generated metadata: dc.format.mimetype = ... dc.format.mimetype = ... dc.format.extent = ... dc.format.extent = ... At this point one can not tell which metadata (as it belongs to the item) refers to which bitstream. So recreating the old behaviour might not be a good idea. If I'd wanted to be persnickety, I'd have thrown in the size of the database as well, but that probably doesn't amount to much more than a rounding error. Message-ID: <003f01ca3818$a83979b0$f8ac6d10$@barrett@adelaide.edu.au> Can anyone confirm my understanding of how DSpace performs keyword indexing/searching? I suspect that it is doing automatic mapping of singular and plural forms of words. How I came to this understanding was as follows. I was searching for an item authored by Alys (alternate spelling of Alice) Clark. I retrieved three items none of which had the word alys in the metadata or bitstream. If I searched for alys on its own I got 168 hits and a cursory glance at the results list showed that they all had an author with some part of their name being ali. I then tried searching for each of the following forms aly, ali, alis, alys alies All of these as single search terms retrieved exactly the same number of records - 168. Results included items with the following strings in Abstract - ALIS (Advanced Landmine Imaging System), which is a novel landmine detection sensor system - Current ventilatory practices for the management of ALI favor low tidal volumes - Current Trends in Periodontal Diagnosis & Disease Recognition in Malaysia / T.B. Taiyeb Ali - Radiology in the acute abdomen / P.G. Devitt, A. Aly, M. Thomas My conclusion is that DSpace is doing some process of mapping plural to singular forms of words including allowing for alternate endings. If it is doing this it is very clever but just a little annoying as Alys is not the plural of Ali. Also if clever enough to do this why can't it map fiber to fibre and color to colour which would have much greater benefits in searching a database that includes North American and European data. In-Reply-To: <003f01ca3818$a83979b0$f8ac6d10$@barrett@adelaide.edu.au> References: <003f01ca3818$a83979b0$f8ac6d10$@barrett@adelaide.edu.au> Message-ID: <12154BD7A5A6D84F9E96AAA8899E8384011FDC33@ex1.its.waikato.ac.nz> HI Vanessa, You?re correct. Dspace uses Apache Lucene to index and analyse full text, and one of the things a Lucene analyser (note: all docs and code refer to the American spelling, analyzer) does is perform ?stemming? on indexed tokens, so common suffixes like ?ing?, ?ed?, ?es?, ?ly? are chopped off the tokens, and off your search terms as well. It?s possible to write your own Lucene analyser or extend your own, and replace the default DSAnalyzer that Dspace uses with your version. I?ve done this in my installations, not for stemming, but to properly tokenise macronised vowels (? ? ? ? ?) that are used in New Zealand but aren?t in supported ISO character sets. This page might help explain the concepts better than myself: http://wiki.apache.org/lucene-java/ConceptsAndDefinitions?highlight=(stemmer) This is a quote from the Dspace system docs: The Lucene analyzer used in searching and indexing can be configured by setting the search.analyzer configuration item in dspace.cfg to the class of the desired analzyer. If this item is not present/commented out, the default Lucene analyzer org.dspace.search.DSAnalyzer is used. As well as those analyzers included in the Lucene distribution (see lucene.jar), a Chinese analyzer from the Lucene sandbox is included in lucene-sandbox.jar. This analyzer is yet to be included in the core Lucene distribution but can be configured by setting search.analyzer = org.apache.lucene.analysis.cn.ChineseAnalyzer in dspace.cfg. Cheers, Kim From: dspace-general-bounces at mit.edu [mailto:dspace-general-bounces at mit.edu] On Behalf Of Vanessa Barrett Sent: Friday, 18 September 2009 4:30 p.m. To: dspace-general at mit.edu Subject: [Dspace-general] Indexing - automatic mapping of plurals andalternate endings? Can anyone confirm my understanding of how DSpace performs keyword indexing/searching? I suspect that it is doing automatic mapping of singular and plural forms of words. How I came to this understanding was as follows. I was searching for an item authored by Alys (alternate spelling of Alice) Clark. I retrieved three items none of which had the word alys in the metadata or bitstream. If I searched for alys on its own I got 168 hits and a cursory glance at the results list showed that they all had an author with some part of their name being ali. I then tried searching for each of the following forms aly, ali, alis, alys alies All of these as single search terms retrieved exactly the same number of records ? 168. Also if clever enough to do this why can?t it map fiber to fibre and color to colour which would have much greater benefits in searching a database that includes North American and European data. Please join us in welcoming them! Jeffrey Trimble is currently the Systems Librarian at Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio. His responsibilities range from tracing network cabling under the carpet to Unix administration on their various AIX/LINUX servers. He oversees the coordination of the local Integrated Library System (ILS) with the statewide OhioLINK system. Additionally, he has the primary responsibility for the three DSpace instances at the university, including RSpace, the repurposed DSpace software acting as an eReserve service for the library. In the DSpace community, Jeffrey has been instrumental in improving the DSpace documentation for release 1.6 as the "Documentation Gardener". In an effort to weed and feed the documentation, he has tested various components and suggests changes and specifications when the components doesn't work as expected. Larry began contributing to DSpace in 2005, through work on several grant-sponsored research projects in the MIT Libraries' Technology R&D group. Since May 2009 he has been working for Harvard University Library as the primary architect and developer of its open-access institutional repository, DASH (Digital Access to Scholarship at Harvard - http://dash.harvard.edu/). Much of his work with DSpace has been in the area of interoperability and external interfaces. He has wide and varied interests in software development, including a previous brush with digital libraries through a couple of Dienst implementations and the old NCSTRL (Networked Computer Science Technical Report Library) project.
