Dear members of the DSpace community,

The DSpace Foundation will be hosting a workshop at the Open  
Repositories conference(https://or09.library.gatech.edu/) in Atlanta,  
GA the week of May 18th.  We welcome everyone from the community to  
attend, you will find a description below.  The workshop will be run  
by a panel of DSpace committers and Brad McLean, the Foundation  
Technical Director.  Please email me if you would like to sign up for  
the workshop, it is complimentary if you are attending the conference.

DSpace Workshop

The DSpace Foundation will host a workshop on Thursday from 1-4pm at  
the Open Repositories conference.  This workshop will feature two  
sessions,  providing updates on DSpace 1.5.2, 1.6 and DSpace 2.0, as  
well as an interactive panel discussion.

The first 1.5 hours will be a user driven interactive question and  
answer session for users and developers of the DSpace community.    
Questions, issues or requests for guidance on working with DSpace  
1.5.x are welcomed.  The audience for this session is current users  
who need more detail or discussion on 1.5 than was provided during the  
user group sessions.  The future of DSpace 1.x releases will be  
discussed as well.

The second 1.5 hours will focus on DSpace 2.0 and is primarily for  
developers who want to learn more details on 2.0 and how to begin  
working with the 2.0 code base. Architecture, core functionality and  
components of 2.0 will be discussed.

??We successfully installed DSpace 1.5.2 that just released on 15th April 2009 . We learned the concept of Communities/ Sub communities/ Collections/ Items in DSpace. We uploaded digital contents to communities. We were taught? to change the Logo of Dspace, Putting a picture as Welcome Message, Change Colour of Sidebar, Search box, Enabling RSS Feeds, Change a form value (Type of Content) , keeping backups etc.? The workshop gave thrust to hands on training. The participants were senior library professionals and system analysts from various organisations. The interactive sections were also very active.

My observations 
1.????? The main attraction of this workshop was that the organisers didn?t charge any fee. They provided course material both in hard and soft copy, lunch and kit free of cost. 
2.????? The well designed (with a lot of screen shots) course material was found to be an effective tool for easily installing DSpace without the help of anybody. 
3.????? The methods of instructions and interactions of resource persons and participants helped to understand the practical problems in creating, organising and maintaining?? an Institutional repository, advantages of Dspace over other software?s etc. 
? 
4.????? The workshop also helped to create confidence in participants in creating Institutional Repositories. Awareness about open source software was also important. 
? 
5.????? The participants are very much thankful to the organisers. 
? 
??? I would like to congratulate the resource persons and the organisers for organising such a wonderful workshop.?

Dear DSpace community member,

 

We recently ran a survey to collect the views of the community concerning what new features we should concentrate on building into version 1.6 of DSpace. Thank you to everyone who took part and gave us their views.

 

The top three features requested were:

 

1)      Better statistics

2)      An embargo facility

3)      Batch metadata editing

In order to move forward with these requests, we have decided to form working groups of interested parties and relevant stakeholders. Each feature has been assigned a point of contact that will drive forward this process so that we come to an agreement as to the precise requirements for each of these features, and to decide if existing solutions that already exist in the community can be used to provide these features, or if new development efforts are required.

 

If you are interested in any of these features, look out for further emails in the next few days from each of the points of contact who will explain how the process will work for each feature. We will likely use JIRA (http://jira.dspace.org/), the DSpace wiki (http://wiki.dspace.org/) and online meetings to complete this process.

Hi everyone,
I want to ask some questions about the ingest item process through the LNI.
 
We know that DSpace offered the unofficial Version of JAVA Code for DSpaceSIP  and LNIClient which for PUT Method are.
 
With the Combination of the two JAVA Class we can write a minimal LNIClient for ingest function.
 
1.    The DSpaceSIP is used to build the SIP Package with the original File and METS File. The original Files are converted to outputstream and the SIP is zipped. Question is whether DSpace accept the ZIP OS of SIP. I know this is a foolish question but really want to know.
 
2.    What is the primaryBitstream in the DSpaceSIP?
 
3.    Can I just ignore the workflow for the ingest process in the WebUI, if I use the SIP to ingest the item in DSpace
 
4.  OutputStream os = lni.startPut(collection, "METS", null); Is the String ?collection? write the WebDAV handle number of the collection, in which I want to ingest the new item.
 
5.  I have now 1000 PDF Files and the XML Metadaten Files in well-formated Bibtex and want to ingest the files in DSpace. Does DSpace-Server support the Bibtex Format to describe the PDF Files?? Can I just build the Bibtex instead of MODS or DC into the METS(dmdsec)? Or should I convert the Bibtex into QDC for the DSpace?

workshop.  NITLE is sponsoring a DSpace user group meeting and  
workshop, and ALL members of the DSpace community are invited to  
attend.  Due to popular demand they have added a second DSpace  
workshop, on June 4th 8:30-12:30pm.  In light of this new workshop  
being offered, they have extended registration for the event to May

we call is "RSpace".   Currently it is housing our reserves for the  
music
faculty (sound recordings) and some documents for Chemistry.

Come to OR2009 and I'll be talking about RSpace....and the possible
repurposing of DSpace software for uses such as this.

Naveed,

We've never compiled good documentation on this, but I'd be happy to  
place
something out there after I get back from OR09.

Would this be something folks would want to have on the DSpace Wiki  
somewhere?

A few things that come to mind:

	1.  We used the technique of two instances of DSpace on one server,  
one tomcat running.
	2.  It was version 1.4.2, and the build.xml had to be edited for this  
second instance.  In fact
		we have two different [dspace-source] directories.
	3.  Since this server is behind our firewall, our students can gain  
access via our proxy server.  We
		linked bibliographic records from our III ILS system via URLS to the  
RSpace instance, and vice
		versa.  The ILS has the URL for the proxy server (or as we say, to  
"connect from off campus, click
		here").

That's a very brief synopsis, but I'd be happy to compile some  
documentation.

announce another addition to the group: Kim Shepherd. Please join us in

Kim works at Waikato University in New Zealand for the Library
Consortium Of New Zealand (LCONZ). He is responsible for managing,
developing and supporting 4 DSpace instances. Over the past year Kim has
been active in helping out on the DSpace email lists, and in coding bug
fixes and new features for DSpace.

 

His current interests and areas of development are statistics, workflow
and submission, authentication and authorisation, and integration with
external research management applications. He can also be found working
away at various JSPUI/XMLUI ideas.

 

Kim says "I'm excited to have the opportunity to get more involved in

I have a quick question about customizing the metadata input for all the DSpace collections. I've found instructions for altering the input-forms.xml, in the config subdirectory. We're using Manakin, and I'm wondering if this is the only file that needs to be altered in order to change the metadata input fields, or if other configuration needs to occur. (All of the metadata elements are in the metadata registry accessible from the UI).

Using DSpace 1.5.1 / Manakin.

We're noticing that many DSpace instances still have misconfigured
robots.txt files which are preventing them from being indexed by search
engines.

In short -- please ensure that *NEITHER* of the following lines are present
in your robots.txt file at http://your.dspace.url/robots.txt:

Disallow: /browse
Disallow: /browse-date

If either line is present (as accidentally shipped with DSpace 1.5 and
1.5.1), search engines may be prevented from indexing any content in your
DSpace instance.

The fact is that i can insert more unqualified metadata fields like
"date" or "format" ...
And finally, if i try to do the injection process throught DSpace
JSPUI assistant, it works perfect, so i can not understand what is

Dear members of the DSpace community,

I wanted to let you know the DSpace and Fedora Boards of Directors  
have approved the joining of the DSpace Foundation and Fedora  
Commons.  The new organization will be called "DuraSpace" and will  
support the DSpace platform, the Fedora Platform, the Mulgara semantic  
store, and our new cloud offering DuraCloud (in development).   The  
organization will be led by an executive team consisting of Sandy  
(Chief Executive Officer), Michele (Chief Business Officer) and Brad  
McLean (Chief Technology Officer).

We and our Boards are enthusiastic about the opportunities possible in  
the new  organization, whose purpose  is to provide sustainable open  
technologies and services for building durable digital content spaces  
that support scholarship, science, and culture.  The new organization  
will begin operations on July 1st.

Fedora Commons and DSpace Foundation Join Together to Create  
"DuraSpace" Organization

Ithaca, NY, Boston, MA --- Fedora Commons and the DSpace Foundation,  
two of the largest providers of open source software for managing and  
providing access to digital content, have announced today that they  
will join their organizations to pursue a common mission.  Jointly,  
they will provide leadership and innovation in open source  
technologies for global communities who manage, preserve, and provide  
access to digital content.

The joined organization, named ?DuraSpace,? will sustain and grow its  
flagship repository platforms - Fedora and DSpace.  DuraSpace will  
also expand its portfolio by offering new technologies and services  
that respond to the dynamic environment of the Web and to new  
requirements from existing and future users.  DuraSpace will focus on  
supporting existing communities and will also engage a larger and more  
diverse group of stakeholders in support of its not-for-profit  
mission.  The organization will be led by an executive team consisting  
of Sandy Payette (Chief Executive Officer), Michele Kimpton (Chief  
Business Officer), and Brad McLean (Chief Technology Officer) and will  
operate out of offices in Ithaca, NY and Cambridge, MA.

?This is a great development,? said Clifford Lynch, Executive Director  
of the Coalition for Networked Information (CNI).  ?It will focus  
resources and talent in a way that should really accelerate progress  
in areas critical to the research, education, and cultural memory  
communities.  The new emphasis on distributed reliable storage  
infrastructure services and their integration with repositories is  
particularly timely. ?

Together Fedora and DSpace make up the largest market share of open  
repositories worldwide, serving over 700 institutions.  These include  
organizations committed to the use of open source software solutions  
for the dissemination and preservation of academic, scientific, and  
cultural digital content.

  ?The joining of DSpace and Fedora Commons is a watershed event for  
libraries, specifically, and higher education, more generally,? said  
James Hilton, CIO of the University of Virginia.  ?Separately, these  
two organizations operated with similar missions and a shared  
commitment to developing and supporting open technologies.  By  
bringing together the technical, financial, and community-based  
resources of the two organizations, their communities gain a robust  
organization focused on solving the many challenges involved in  
storing, curating, and preserving digital data and scholarship,? he

New Products

DuraSpace will continue to support its existing software platforms,  
DSpace and Fedora, as well as expand its offerings to support the  
needs of global information communities.  The first new technology to  
emerge will be a Web-based service named ?DuraCloud.?  DuraCloud is a  
hosted service that takes advantage of the cost efficiencies of cloud  
storage and cloud computing, while adding value to help ensure  
longevity and re-use of digital content.  The DuraSpace organization  
is developing partnerships with commercial cloud providers who offer  
both storage and computing capabilities.

The DuraCloud service will be run by the DuraSpace organization.  Its  
target audiences are organizations responsible for digital  
preservation and groups creating shared spaces for access and re-use  
of digital content.  DuraCloud will be accessible directly as a Web  
service and also via plug-ins to digital repositories including Fedora  
and DSpace.  The software developed to support the DuraCloud service  
will be made available as open source.  An early release of DuraCloud  
will be available for selected pilot partners in Fall 2009.

Key Benefits of the DuraSpace Organization

DuraSpace will support both DSpace and Fedora by working closely with  
both communities and, when possible, develop synergistic technologies,  
services, and programs that increase interoperability of the two  
platforms.  DuraSpace will also support other open source software  
projects including the Mulgara semantic store, a scalable RDF database.

DuraSpace will pursue a mission that extends beyond these existing  
software platforms.  This broader mission will include developing open

In the recent DSpace 1.6 survey, having a batch metadata editing
facility in DSpace was voted one of the top three features that we
should be concentrating on.

 

This email is to ask for your help and involvement to try and decide how
such a facility should work. We would like to gather the requirements
that the community has for this facility in order to ensure that what we
develop a suitable solution.

 

Please could you either respond by adding a response to the wiki page
http://wiki.dspace.org/index.php/Batch_Metadata_Editing_Feature or by
emailing it directly to me and I will add it to the wiki.

 

Please respond by the 20th May 2009. 

 

Once we have gathered all the responses, we will try to draw up a final
list of requirements, and look into how best to develop them. If you

For writing an ingest tool i have installed the dspace 1.5.2 under our Server at fernuni hagen.

note,that i haven't registered the CRNI handle System.

So l used the LNIclient from Larry und try to talk to DSpace LNI Server.

Is the Page of LNI WebDAV

Why do i get still the status 404 with the lookup methode?? I have just one community with "123456789/1" 
I can't ensure whether my DSpace LNI Server already works or is installed

Is the LNI already installed in my DSpace 1.5.2? 

In [dspace]/webapps/lni just nothing (only META-INF and WEB-INF)?
Yes, all the dspace lni files like dspace lni client jar or dspace lni war are builded under [dspace-source]/dspace

What should i do to get the LNI Server start? cp the files from [dspace-source]/dspace/modules/lni/target to [dspace]/webapps/lni

I really need the help,please!

after installing the dspace server i am trying to ingest some items to test it.

So i created the demo community and demo collection.
But when i gatta ingest a new item in demo collection, i get still the Internal System Error by the Step Upload in the workflow.

can somebody tell me,how can i fix it? 

PS: i just installed the server without any setting for handle System and mail system.

I am the System Administrator for the Dspace instance at the University 
of the West Indies, Mona campus (http://dspace.mona.uwi.edu).

Our project is still in its piloting phase but there are plans to make 
it mainstream. In this regard I would like some information on how 
Dspace can be modified for high performance, scalability and redundancy. 
We are thinking of a site that is robust enough to can handle 500 
simultaneous users. Any information you can provide would be 
appreciated, or if you can point me in the direction to get further help.

Hi Yannick,

If these 500 simultaneous users are non-authenticated, browsing users, 
you should probably look to reduce the strain on the Tomcat application 
server and the database by using a reverse caching proxy.  Squid 
(www.squid-cache.org) is the most common reverse proxy and can cache the 
web content in memory and on disk.  If the caching proxy already has the 
web content in memory (and it is fresh), it will simply deliver the 
request without invoking DSpace. Two high-performance reverse-proxy 
servers with large amounts of RAM should be able to handle five hundred 
non-authenticated, browsing users without a problem.

If these 500 simultaneous users are all authenticated users, you will 
need to explore Tomcat clustering, load balancing (specific hardware or 
via Apache), and database clustering.  This DSpace wiki page is a start:

It would be easier for us to promote DOI to our academics as they already understand what DOI's are.

It seems to work fine and there is no delay in resolving them.

I've used this "trick" in the past too.  Since DOIs are just Handles in 
the "10" namespace, you will find that dx.doi.org and hdl.handle.net are 
actually just aliases for the same thing.  So there oughtn't to be any 
problem with doing this.

Hello Robin,

during ingest your dspace instance will try to send email, so you got to 
provide valid email settings in the dspace.cfg.
If your instance isn't able to send emails you will get an internal 
error on granting the license, because at that point either the 
submitter or the workflow members will be notified.


As you get the error at an earlier stage, check your [dspace] dir 
permissions. The user, under which your servlet container runs, needs to 
write to the upload dirctory and assetstore during ingest.

I'd like to start off some discussion of how DSpace can provide better
statistics on its content and functioning.  Here are some thoughts to
spark the conversation:

o  "Statistics" is a broad and diffuse topic.  We will probably
   identify more than one distinct area of focus.  What contributors
   need to see is not what the site's providers and champions need to
   see, is not what senior administrators need to see, is not what
   sysadmin.s need to see, is not what Promotion and Tenure committees
   need to see....

o  Different sites may well have different bundles of needs --
   different enough that one package may not cover both sets of
   requirements.  At least in the short to medium term, we may profit
   from encouraging several complementary approaches.

o  It may be possible to slot in more than one package within a single
   repository.  Maybe "statistics" should be significantly modular
   within itself.

o  There's a lot of good work out there already.  We may get good
   results sooner from contributions to some of them, than from
   an attempt to start from scratch.

o  There are excellent external tools, whether you want to produce
   giant all-encompassing reports or run simple ad-hoc experiments.
   How can we support people who want to siphon DSpace's observations
   off into SAS, SPSS, R, Stata, Excel, whatever?

The DSpace committers group recently announced a reorganisation of the
DSpace SVN code repository that is hosted by SourceForge.net:

tml  These changes allowed us to structure the code repository in such a
way as to allow the continuing development of DSpace 1.6 and 2.0 in an
efficient manner.

 

The committers group have now made another change which we believe will
assist the DSpace community to work more effectively, foster higher
levels of user contribution, and improve the development process:

 

We have moved the subversion code repository from its current home at
SourceForge (http://dspace.svn.sf.net/) to a new dedicated server
(http://scm.dspace.org/) that has been kindly donated by the Oregon
State University's Open Source Lab (http://osuosl.org/).

 

There are many advantages to this move including:

 

-          Fine grained access control which will allow us to host
sub-projects or to give individual users contribution access to parts of
the code base.

-          Better performance levels than SourceForge sometimes provides

-          More flexibility to use SVN as we require

 

The main change for developers now is to note the location of our SVN
repository, and to start using that to build against rather than the
SourceForge version. If you spot any documentation that needs updating,
please either update it yourself (in the case of the wiki), or add it to
JIRA (http://jira.dspace.org/).

 

The locations you now need to use are:

 

-          DSpace SVN: http://scm.dspace.org/svn/repo/dspace/

-          Dspace 2.0 SVN: http://scm.dspace.org/svn/repo/dspace2/

Yes, it is a broad topic but there is a standard for usage stats. It
is called COUNTER. The specs may be found at
http://www.projectcounter.org/index.html. This std is not ideal. There
is insufficient provision for internationalisation, for example. Also
the std leans towards the use of closed-secret-proprietary file
formats such as Micro$oft Excel. But hey, it's a start.

My DSpace has, for a given article, PDF and HTML versions. When you
get taken to the article page you pick which format you want. It would
be good if usage stats show separate counts for the PDF and HTML.
Also, for DSpace items that are books I have a separate TOC. It would
be useful to distinguish between counts for the book and counts for
the TOC.

hello DSpacers,

I realise that DSpace is designed to be primarily for institutional
repositories but I wonder if it could also be used as the
implementation basis for a digital library owned by a publisher. Now
we know that publishers charge a fortune for access and this is
unsustainable. Eventually it must give way to open access, but the
current business model may have as much as another 10 years of life.
So please bear with me while I propose extensions to DSpace that may
have such a lifetime......

If Dspace could be used in this way for that time then I see that
publishers would have a level playing field for the features their
digital library has. So they would be distinguished primarily by
content. This would be in accordance with their links and
relationships with societies and institutions. So I don't see it
harming open source at all, and I think it would promote healthy
competition among the publishers. It reminds me of companies that
provide streams of financial data. Eventually the software
infrastructure for that will be open source and the companies will
have to compete on the quality and breadth of the data.

With this in mind, I wonder if DSpace would ever consider adding
features that publishers would find useful. Some sort of fulfillment
system springs to mind. This would involve, as a bare minimum,
recording customers and their licenses. A fulfillment system can be
large and complex so it might be enough to just store the minimum for
DSpace to determine if the user has access to the requested article
and assume that the billing etc is done externally. It would also be
useful if DSpace could report on the usage statistics on a per
customer level, as well as for all customers. A fancy system would
also allow customers to be grouped into consortia.

Moving Into the Mainstream, Enabling Our Digital Future
 
Digital technology has become indispensible to modern culture, commerce, science, education, and entertainment. As our dependence on the digital ecosystem increases, so does the need for effective and sustainable digital preservation policies, strategies, and practices so that the digital assets of our time will remain viable and useful to future generations.

Digital preservation is considered broadly as a continuum of intentions and activities leading to long-lived digital assets that can be used, re-used, and re-imagined in conventional and novel contexts now and into the future. The theme of the iPRES 2009 conference is "Moving into the mainstream, enabling our digital future," which is intended to spark discussion of:

* Re-positioning preservation awareness and services further upstream in the digital lifecycle so that "born-archival" replaces "born-digital" as the norm;
* Re-emphasizing that digital preservation problems and solutions encompass legal, economic, and social as well as technological dimensions;
* Re-asserting the need for comprehensive integration of preservation analysis and activities into the organizational planning and operations of institutions that produce, manage, or exploit digital resources;

iPRES is a series of international conferences that seeks to address issues and further the art and science of digital preservation by bringing together experts and practitioners from across the spectrum of preservation disciplines. We invite you to submit proposals for panels, papers and posters that present new research findings or novel applications of digital preservation, particularly those that demonstrate the mainstreaming of digital preservation activities and practices.

A selection of the outstanding papers from the iPRES 2009 conference will be submitted for publication to the International Journal of Digital Curation <http://www.ijdc.net>, a leading peer-reviewed journal of digital curation and preservation.

* July 1, 2009: Notification of acceptance
* September 11, 2009: Submission of camera-ready papers

Format and Submission
Abstracts are due on June 5, 2009, and should be submitted to perry.willett at ucop.edu in PDF format. Panel and paper abstracts should be between 300 and 1,000 words; poster abstracts should be between 200 and 500 words. All abstracts should include the names, titles, affiliations, and contact information for all authors.

Final papers can be up to eight pages in length (including references) in the AAAI style. See http://www.aaai.org/Publications/Author/author.php for more information. Full papers, and poster and paper abstracts, will be made available to conference attendees in paper and electronic form.

The so-called Web 2.0 brought a new breadth to the Internet, and a social
perspective that seems set to stay. Services such as LinkedIn, Hi5, and
Facebook have found a place in our society. People connect to each other
through common paths. Meta-APIs such as Google's November 2007 release,
OpenSocial, enable social applications to operate across multiple sites and
services, providing a way to relate much of this data. In social
bookmarking tools (e.g. Delicious, Connotea, Bibsonomy), and media sharing
services
(such as Youtube, Flickr, Picasa, Slideshare) people are asked to tag and
otherwise annotate and share their resources inside communities or at a
global scale, creating a huge amount of user generated metadata (tags) with
a clear value for information discovery.

This workshop intends to gather all interested in such applications and
developments, and in their relationship with metadata and practices. The
themes of the workshop will be:
-         Emerging trends in social tagging.
-         Tagging communities and Web-based collaboration.
-         Web standards for resource description in collaborative
landscapes.
-         Vocabulary building from folksonomies (tag-ontologies,
tag-thesaurus, etc.)
-         Metadata and annotation management.
-         Formats for describing communities (FOAF, SIOC, etc.)
-         Analysis of online communities (SNA) through folksonomies and
tagging systems.
-         Other ways of describing information for Web 2.0 (microformats,
etc.)

Dear All,

We are currently running Dspace 1.4 and for one collection we have configured
some submitters and one "Approve/Reject" person, so that she will be able to
check the inserted metadata of the items before accepting it for publication.

However, we are facing the following problem. The submitter user is able to go through all
the steps when submiting his essay/item and gets the e-mail notification about the fact
that the essay is "in-queue" waiting to be confirmed. Then the "Approve/Reject/Administrator"
of the collection logs in and sees in her "My DSpace" the task waiting to be approved with all
the related buttons, among which is also the "Take Task" button. 

The problem is that when she clicks on the "Take Task" button, it displays a blank page at the center, while all the other elements
of the page (navigation bar at the left, logo at the top, information bar at the bottom, etc) are displayed
the item per se, or any other information that should have been displayed at the center of the screen are
not. It is just a blank page.


I have checked the log myself (dspace.log) and I quote the final lines of the log that I have come
across with bold the last two reporting the exact error.

seems as if you came across a known and solved bug, see

Which hast been fixed by revision 2276 of

Dear Claudia,

Thank you very much for your reply. I think that this is the problem, however,
the bug-solution refers to a newer version than 1.4 (1.5.x I guess), and in 1.4
this file (CollectionStyleSelection.java)
is not there. But, since the "bug" has the same behavior as in that newer
version, I think that it is in a similar file.
Do you happen to know which exactly? Or at least approximately?

changing the layout etc. (then running mvn package and ant update) does 
not have any effect on the contents of your DSpace instance.

yes, this is fantasic. It would be very interesting to see how this was
done. Maybe the same technique could be used to provide embedded viewers for
other kinds of content. I am thinking of jmol for viewing molecules as 3D
rotating images.

Hi all,

 

I can't guarantee this is how UPC.edu achieved it, but it looks as if it is implemented as follows:

 

-          Embed some code in DSpace somewhere suitable (e.g. in display-item.jsp, or more likely ItemTag.java)

-          Make this code look for bitstreams with a .flv (flash video) / .mp4 / .mp3 / .aac  extension

-          If it detects one, add the Javascript required to show the player (in this example http://www.longtailvideo.com/players/jw-flv-player/) with it configured to play the relevant bitstream (e.g. http://upcommons.upc.edu/video/bitstream/2099.2/648/4/Cap%204_VP6_1Mbps.flv)

 

A pretty quick and easy solution, that works well.

Because the DC doesn't support alle fileds of bibtex record like journal or pages.

yes, this is fantasic. It would be very interesting to see how this was done. Maybe the same technique could be used to provide embedded viewers for other kinds of content. I am thinking of jmol for viewing molecules as 3D rotating images.

In DC terms the correct thing to do would be to combine journal, pages etc into one string and store it in dc.bibliographicCitation, but that may be tricky for you  if you have more than one publication type (eg journal, chapter in book etc) as the citation format would vary.

I'm facing a typical problem while installing DSpace in windows platform. Following the installing guide by 

G. Santhosh Kumar, it shows BUILD ERROR when I run mvn package... Error
building POM...unable to download the artifact from any repository. How
can I solve the problem? Please specify step by step.

Dear DSpace community,

Last week we launched a new website for dspace.org.  The purpose of  
the new design was to improve the design and ability to find  
information for both new and existing users.  We did an extensive  
analysis or what types of users come to the site, where they get stuck  
and what pages are requested most.  Through this analysis and working  
with a team of folks inside MIT we were able to come up with a new  
site layout.  We hope you like it!  Please give us any feedback

We will continue to add more content as it becomes available to the  
new site, such as "use cases", "list of useful add ons and

Hi,

It's me again!

My Boss said, that i can use the sample DC and just pick up some bibtex fields which are important for the original file.

The question is the ":" for dc:title since i use  Element dcElt=new Element("dc:title") to build a new dc term;

Should i give a new namespace or schema for the element? Can anyone tell me how can i fix the problem which

Hello.

We're having difficulties editing DSpace records after they're uploaded
(live) and wondering if this is a bug or we're the only ones with the
problem:

We've changed or added administrators for a collection only to discover
they couldn't edit items that were deposited prior to their becoming an
administrator. Collection administrators can only edit those items
submitted after they are assigned the administrator role.  

Has anyone else experienced this? Is there some way to resolve this
issue?

Hi Robin, I don't know JDOM, but I am guessing yes, add an element called "title" with a namespace of " http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" or "http://purl.org/dc/terms/" (depends on the element). For a fuller explanation of DC as XML see http://dublincore.org/schemas/xmls/.

I don't have that option, I'm afraid.  Do you have links to a version of 
these presentations which will work under Linux?  Or at least which 
don't require a Microsoft plugin for the browser?  Perhaps they could be 
uploaded to youtube?

I dropped the OR09 organisers an email about the proprietary grade 
access barrier to the presentations, and was told that they will be 
available in their digital repository shortly, in an as-yet-undetermined 
format.  Hopefully not wmv, although I can at least read a wmv file from 
disk.  What they've done to the stream to make it unplayable in totem or 
mplayer I don't know :)

Subject: [Dspace-general] Re-Package Servlets To Create New Jars

Hi everyone 
i know that told me to not to message personally but i am having urgent need of doing these.

i have changed api 's (i.e. servlets) to customize as per my need.

so running  mvn package will generate new jar
if not then how to regenerate jars(dspace-api 1.5.2 jar)
