I asked one of the developers this a few months back, and  
unfortunately you cannot create a permanent URL to an item. You can  
link directly to the bitstream in a NON permanent fashion, however.  
When you hover over the link to the bitstream you can see the URL, and  
right-click/copy link location or whatever your browser calls that  
function. It will not be a permanent URL in the sense that it uses the  
handle resolving system, however.

Hope this helps a bit.

Since creating a direct link to an item seems to not be possible, is there a
way to create a smaller url to replace the much longer handle given to an
item?  We are looking to make simple, user friendly urls/handles for our
items that we are going to put into dspace.  Something like
dspace.govst.edu/nameoftheitem.

Recently we have been receiving a lot of Internal Server errors on Dspace
with the message below:

Exception:
org.postgresql.util.PSQLException: No value specified for parameter 2
at org.postgresql.core.QueryExecutor.sendQueryV3(QueryExecutor.java:313)
...
...

I traced it down to be a problem with the JDBC driver for postgres, but are there any workarounds for
DSpace concerning this matter? Does anyone else have faced a similar problem?

Any help is appreciated.

Apart from the user trying to register twice, are there any other reasons that may generate that error?

there are a some test instances, mostly created for the testathon. You 
can get dspace administor rights there. But this will only cover the 
admin parts which can be done via UI.

Dear members of the community,

If you are currently running DSpace 1.5 or DSpace 1.5.1, your site is  
not being indexed by Google, Google scholar or any public search  
engine for that matter.  The issue has been fixed in 1.5.2.  However,  
you can fix the problem immediately by removing the line in the   
robots.txt file that reads disallow:/browse.

I highly recommend you take this simple action as soon as possible so  
your publicly available content is indexed.  As many of you know as  
much as 60% of traffic to your DSpace resources comes from Google and  
other public search engines.
You can find more detail at:  http://wiki.dspace.org/index.php/Ensuring_your_instance_is_indexed

To improve the ability of your site to be indexed you should also  
install site maps- which makes it much easier for any search engine to  
discover all the links within your site.  This is part of version  
1.5.2, but you can also install a patch at:   http://jira.dspace.org/jira/browse/DS-35

Google and most other search engines do not use OAI-PMH for indexing,  
please do not rely on this protocol for search engine exposure.

We are in an early testing phase with DSpace 1.5.2, using the XMLUI. We 
work with resources in many languages, and include metadata in a variety 
of languages, even for a single item.

Is it possible to:
1. allow the submitter to specify the language of the content of a 
metadata field in the submission UI for a given element.qualifier?
Or 
2. at least prevent DSpace from assigning a language attribute of "en_US" 
to most metadata element instances?

I know it is possible to edit the metadata afterward, but we would prefer 
no language attribute on the metadata to having to manually update this 
for every record.

As far as I know this isn't currently a feature in DSpace. There is a
setting in dspace.cfg "default.language = en_US" which can be changed,
however, if it is left empty, it defaults to 'en'.

 

If you wanted to change it by default to be left empty, you probably
need to look in
[dspace-src]/dspace-api/src/main/java/org/dspace/submit/step/DescribeSte
p.java and look for the following block of code:

 

    public static String getDefaultLanguageQualifier()

    {

       String language = "";

       language = ConfigurationManager.getProperty("default.language");

       if (language == null || language == "")

       {

                   language = "en";

       }

       return language;

    }

Hi Antonio,

 

If you haven?t found any documentation or examples specifically for Arabic, you might be interested in this Persian example from EIAH ? it was demonstrated at OR 09 and handles a lot of the challenges you will face ? right to left hand side (and bidirectional when English phrases are quoted etc), zero-width non-joiners, etc..

It doesn?t go into a great deal of detail ? it was fascinating just to see that this is possible, though, so perhaps the people at EIAH can help to document this further or share some notes. I believe there are many similarities between Persian and Arabic character/input/date handling?

DSpace at Cambridge Support and Liaison Officer to provide technical support 
and guidance to all users of the DSpace at Cambridge institutional repository.

library services. The post-holder will share responsibilities on a

Hi everyone:

In our old version of DSpace (1.3.2) collection administrators have the ability to add new submitters or remove existing ones for their collection. DSpace 1.5.1 doesn't have this feature.

Someone in our faculty of grad studies has collection admin status for the ETD collection in DSpace, and they authorize each student's login to upload their thesis or dissertation (about 1000 a year). When we move to 1.5.1 this will no longer be possible, unless we give them sys admin status. 

How are folks dealing with this issue? Is it a problem for anyone?

Hi?Everbody

I am using dspace jspui.
I want to create a collection administrator who can manage submitters for a particular collection.
After logged in as ADMIN?,In?Authorization under Administer.
In Authrization i chose , Manage Collection's policies and choose a collection and then edit policy.
?I got??"Policies for collection ..." , In next step.
Then i clicked Add Policy button.
And choose group? and from Action : COLLECTION_ADMIN. and then , Save.
But i am not able to edit submitters for that particular collection after logging as Collection Admin.
(I have another e-person which is assigned a Collection Admin role under a group).
It says error message "Authorization Required".

There is a file Constants.java which has constants defined for actions.
In that there is a constant with follwoing comment.

Means , It should work. I can edit collection but not submitters.

Hi!

 

Batch metadata editing was one of the top three features that was
requested in the recent DSpace 1.6 survey.

 

We have been working at Auckland University to implement a solution
which is now ready for comment.

The system works by exporting metadata (for an item, a collection, a
community, or the whole repository) to a CSV file. That file can then be
edited in a spreadsheet application. Changes can be made to metadata,
new values added, and other values removed. New metadata-only records
can also be added, and existing items can be moved between collections.
You then import the changed CSV file. Changes are highlighted, and if
you confirm the changes are OK, the changes will be processed.

 

Please send any comments to me, and if the overall is response is
positive, we can look at getting it committed into the SVN repository
ready for 1.6.

Beyond the Repository Fringe 2009 - Call for Participation

Sponsored by JISC, the Beyond the Repository Fringe 2009 event will be hosted by the University of Edinburgh with support from the Digital Curation Centre, the School of Informatics, EDINA, and Information Services, as well as UKOLN and EPrints.

This year the Repository Fringe organisers aim to draw on and showcase a range of inspirational repository developments, including those produced from the JISC Rapid Innovation and Repository and Preservation programmes, plus various 'barcamps', 'hackdays' and repository challenges.

Designed for an audience of developers, repository managers and practitioners, the programme retains an 'unconference' feel to it, and seeks to canvass contribution from a wide range of repository actors for:

.	Live demonstrations of innovative work;
.	"Pecha Kucha" presentations on any subject relating to current, or 
future repository endeavours i.e. a presenter shows 20 images for 20 seconds apiece, for a total time of 6 minutes, 40 seconds;
.	Round Table discussions;
.	Formal presentations or tutorials on related topics;
.	A 'Code Challenge' (details to be announced shortly).

Keynote speakers will open and close Beyond the Repository Fringe 2009 and to accompany this event there will be a DCC Associates' Network meeting (delegates will be able to join the network and participate on the day) and a DISC-UK DataShare workshop on 'research data requirements and digital repositories'.

The dates of the event coincide with the start of the buzzing Edinburgh Festival season, which includes the Jazz and Blues Festival (31 July - 9 Aug), the Festival Fringe (7 Aug - 31 Aug), the Edinburgh International Festival (14 Aug - 6 Sept), and the Edinburgh Book Festival (15 Aug - 31 Aug), as well as the usual impromptu street theatre, musicians and sideshows.

It seems that you?are? having classpath?error.
So, Add following line to your classpath variable.
C:\DSpace\lib\
This will solve your problem.

Check the permissions on your server and make sure your tomcat user can 
write to /data/dspace/upload.

In the first reply i told you to add line(C:\DSpace\lib) to CLASSPATH environment variable.
not?in PATH variable.

There is a difference in PATH and CLASSPATH environment variable.

Second thing , There is no need to have?Perl loaded in your system.

 C:\dspace\bin\dsrun org.dspace.administer.CreateAdministrator

  and
cd webapps/
cp -pRv jspui/  /var/lib/tomcat5/webapps

then,
chown -R root:root jspui/

There is no other alternate as per my opinion.
You do one thing,
remove backslash and keep c:\dspace\lib in classpath and restart computer and try again. it should work.

I'm looking for examples of whole books/monographs in repositories where the book is a single item with multiple bitstreams (such that the bitstreams represent chapters or parts).  If you have any such examples in your repository, would you please point me to them?  I have a pretty good idea of how to treat a book we need to put in our IR, but would appreciate seeing some other examples.

The best example I know of is NYU afghanistan digital library at http://afghanistandl.nyu.edu/ 
.  I believe they did a fair bit of customization though to make it

I read Vol1:Issue1 with interest, especially the question from Greg  
Johnson about wanting to
be able to link individual files in a record directly.

The lack of this functionality has really got us (Gj?vik University  
College) thinking about
our needs, and that we may need to look for a different product to

capability.

I would really like to know what you all think about this shortcoming

I have done bath import via command line. When i executed the command it
does not show any errors. But i am unable to view those imported files in
the web browser. Can anyone figure out why it is not showing. What to do for

[dspace-1.5.2-src-release]\dspace\lib directory and try again..

Hi, Yureshwar,

There is a lack of details in your import preparation and steps taken. 
It is hard for others to guess what went wrong.

In my experience, if the "contents" file (a simple text file) is not 
properly prepared, the real content files (e.g. pdf) will not show up 
properly.

If you have enough understanding of relational database and sql, you can 
go into the dspace tables to hack out what happened to the item, bundle 
and bitstreams after the import action.

Thanks you! I put the jar file y jvm and maven directory but i don't put
dspace's lib folder.

of columns displayed when I browse items shows the abstract properly,
but the column heading shows:

???itemlist.dc.description.abstract???

The other columns properly show headings 'Preview', 'Issue Date',
'Title', and 'Author(s)'.  Where are these headings defined?

Hi Jennifer,

We upload books as items fairly frequently, and sometimes split them as 
multiple files with one record.  There are a few examples here:

We try not to use multiple files, though, because it makes for a 
frustrating search experience --  the user has to open each of the files 
to identify the one(s) that contained the search term. 

When we do split files, the rationale is only to make the file sizes 
more manageable -- occasionally DSpace crashes with file sizes larger 
than about 15000KB -- rather than to make sections like chapters 
intellectually distinct.  Because we use full text indexing, users don't 
really care much about what section of the book they are in.

Does anyone have experience submitting GIS files into DSpace? We have
folders within folders filled with GIS files (mxd, sbn, sbx, shx, etc.)
and I'm not sure how to handle them. Any suggestions?

Hi allen

We are trying to batch upload files into DSpace ver. 1.5.2

The command is going through with the following output:

Adding items from directory: /path/to/folder/
Generating mapfile: 20080512.ingest.map

There are no errors in that but if i see the ingest.map file it is not
showing anything in it. The directory structure of my import folder is as

We have installed DSpace 1.5.2 in Windows Platform. Is it possible to
upload the multiple files (.pdf, .doc, .xls) at a time, instead of
uploading one by one.

Also in Dspace we have observed that after uploading multiple files, at the
time of display, files are getting arranged alphabetically, is it possible
to keep the ordering according to the order of upload. If it is possible,
kindly guide me to do the same.

I am also doing same as like Suvarsha. I am also not getting any errors
while importing it is not showing any errors. In dspace.log files it is not
showing any errors. But i am unable the imported items in a web browser. Can
you please tell me why it is happening like that?

We have flipped the idea of a Challenge on its head: instead of coming 
to the event, and having two days to work on something of your own 
devising, we have come up with the "Problem", and are giving you a full 
month to come up with a solution!

The Challenge

   "Design a REPOSITORY FOCUSED/ENHANCEMENT service to a 
researcher/academic/teacher that they would feel is intuitively useful 
TO THEM PERSONALLY"

One caveat:

   The only information the researcher will type in and give your 
service is their name, email, and possibly their current institution.

   Any other details that the service asks for will have to be hard 
fought for and must provide instant positive results from the point of 
view of the researcher.

Ideas

Some ideas for useful services:

   * 1-click deposit from any application or any item in any form? 
No... We ask for miracles!
   * mining repos, research council data and other centres for the 
abstracts of projects that the researcher has worked on, and use that to 
get keywords which the service uses to find collegues working in similar 
areas.
   * Compiling a list blog pages, tweets, journals, and websites which 
mention the researcher and/or the researcher's work and providing the 
researcher with a way to track how their individual efforts ripple 
through their network.

Entering

So people, come to the event and pitch your ideas (based on the above 
criteria) to a panel of judges. You are allowed to present anything from 
a paper prototype, to a screencast, to a working UI, to a full-blown 
prototype. The presentations will be part of the "Show and Tell" 
sessions on the Friday afternoon.

The submissions are judged on both their appropriateness and their 
technical achievability: this means that a paper prototype might well 
beat working code if it satisfies these criteria AND is technically 
feasible. If there is doubt about the feasibility of a design, the onus 
is on the entrant to demonstrate this - so working code, all other 
things being equal, will count for something.

The reward

Isn't taking part enough of a reward?

OK... there will be a first prize and two runners-up prizes. Details to 
follow.

Also, if the judges so like a particular submission, then they may 
recommend it for a small (up to ?5,000) grant to give the developer some 
time to develop the idea into a working prototype. The actual amount 
recommended will be at the discretion of the judges and will be based on 
their assessment of how many days development might best be spent on this.

Hello Sue,

We have developed a repository based on DSpace that deals with GIS 
datasets in various formats including Shapefiles like you describe, 
called ShareGeo.
We deal with these "multi-file" datasets by requiring all datasets to be 
packaged into Zip files. The Zip files are stored in DSpace although we 
also do some work during the ingest process to extract the bounding box 
coordinates of the dataset and identify the format of the geospatial 
dataset in the Zip file which gets added to the items metadata.

Some details:
The ingest process unpacks the zip files and extracts the individual 
files that make up a dataset (e.g. .shp, .shx, .dbf etc. in the case a 
Shapefile) which we then pass to another package (GDAL/OGR) to extract 
the bounding box coordinates of the dataset which we use to 
automatically populate the dc.coverage.spatial metadata field.

We have also integrated a Google Maps interface into the repository so 
that the bounding box that has been extracted can be visualized on a map 
background, and also so that users can search for a dataset using a map 
interface.

It seems to have some memory(heap) error. It's not Dspace?error , clean everything and try to re-install everything.
If it continues to occur check your RAM size. The error is because of heap has been exhausted. 
Heap is an internal memory pool created at start-up that tasks use to dynamically allocate memory as needed.

Follow this steps , it might solve yout problem..

1. Add 'C:\apache-maven-2.1.0\bin' to your Environment PATH variable.
2. Create?a new environment variable M2_HOME and give value? C:\apache-maven-2.1.0.
3. Create?another ?new environment variable M2 and give value? %M2_HOME%\bin
4.?Open?new command prompt.
5. Go to Dspace Install directory.
[dspace-1.5.2-src-release]\dspace\
and run mvn package

Hi, everyone.

I've discovered that DSpace does not accept duplicated dc-elements for the
same dc-schema. And discovered also that this verification is done in
DCInputsReader, method checkForDups( ). But I don't understand the reason
for it, once there are no problems about repeating elements in Dublin Core.

And It doesn't seem a good idea to skip this verification in DSpace's code
as well.

Am I wrong, duplicated element are an important thing to check? And if so,
does anyone know why?
