Is this actually the case, or am I mistaken? Assuming I understand it correctly, can anyone comment on why it is the case? Is there a rationale for the omission of this feature, or is just a historical accident? ??Shouldn't it be possible for a collection admin to be assigned this ability? It's quite a common feature in many access controlled environments (i.e. a "modify permissions" permission). What do others think? I am interested in adding this feature (I won't list here the reasons since I think they should be obvious). Finally, can anyone who's hacked on DSpace's authorisation system before provide a hint as to what's involved? Thanks!! Due to project funding restrictions, we have to offer the free training places to staff from English or Welsh universities (those funded by HEFCE or HEFCW). If there are spaces free after that, we can look at offering them to others for a small fee (to cover the cost of the room / refreshments etc). However past experience suggests the course will get booked up very quickly. But... we will be publishing the training materials online for free, so anyone who wants to can make use of them. We are working with a group of DSpace tutorial writers from across the globe to put this course together, and we hope it will make a valuable contribution to the DSpace platform. With 1.5 DSpace took a great step forward. It's adoption increased and there are now over 300 repositories in 52 countries with approx. 2.5 mio documents. Unluckily the wide adoption is not quite reflected in the translations available. It's quite a lot of work to translate a complete version of DSpace (both jspui and xmlui). So a BIG THANX for all of you who shared their translation efforts. An overview of existing translations is available at http://wiki.dspace.org/index.php/I18nSupport#Available_translations_of_Messages.properties_for_JSP-UI http://wiki.dspace.org/index.php/I18nSupport#Available_translations_of_messages.xml_for_XML-UI If you're working on a translation at the moment please share you're work at http://wiki.dspace.org/index.php/I18nSupport#Translation_work_in_progress so others might join their efforts with yours. A list new tags for 1.4.2 -> 1.5 translations of JSPUI is available at http://wiki.dspace.org/static_files/5/5d/NewTags142To15.txt This might ease the effort of updating any existing 1.4.2 translation. I'm not sure if everybody knows that Lucene (and so the DSpace) has fuzzy search. In my opinion this feature is not promoted enough (or not promoted at all). You can use the fuzzy search by adding "~" to query. For example we have an item about the movie Spiderman. So the query "spiterman" doesn't give us any results whereas "spiterman~" give us the right item about the movie (and maybe more items depends on the fuzzy search setting). This can be use also for the thing I personally call "cutted of diacritics search". Because it also works for words with diacritics (so "krejcir~" gives all items where I'm the author even if there is only my surname with diacritics ("Krej???") stored. It's not exact because this gives also results which have nothing common with me. On the other hand why not to use it. For details you can consult the Lucene documentation. hope this post might help Vlastik ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Vlastimil Krej??? Although it is possible to upload several bitstreams per bibliographic record, there is no "out of the box" functionality to have metadata per bitstream. We had the same question from one of our clients, for who we implemented a way of "status management" in DSpace. If users mark their submissions as "submitted", they will have the possibility to modify some fields, and upload additional files, until they mark the item as "published", after which it can no longer be modified by regular users. If you're interested in this, I could make you a screencast, illustrating this proces further in detail. If such a list already exists, a pointer would be welcome. Otherwise, a simple response giving the repository address and DSpace version would be very useful. At UBC, our cIRcle repository (circle.ubc.ca) is running on DSpace v1.3.2 with an upgrade to v1.5 in the very early stages. See also configuring custom authentication code. If you have custom Media Filters, note that these are now configured through dspace.cfg (instead of mediafilter.cfg which is obsolete.) Also, take a look through the default dspace.cfg file supplied with DSpace 1.4.x, as this contains configuration options for various new features you might like to use. In general, these new features default to 'off' and you'll need to add configuration properties as described in the default 1.4.x dspace.cfg to activate them. Your 'localized' JSPs (those in jsp/local) now need to be maintained in the source directory. If you have locally modified JSPs in your [dspace]/jsp/local directory, you will need to merge the changes in the new 1.4.x versions into your locally modified ones. You can use the diff command to compare your JSPs against the 1.4.x versions to do this. You can also check against the DSpace CVS. In [dspace-1.4.x-source] run: ant -Dconfig=[dspace]/config/dspace.cfg updateThe database schema needs updating. SQL files containing the relevant file are provided. If you've modified the schema locally, you may need to check over this and make alterations. For PostgreSQL [dspace-1.4.x-source]/etc/database_schema_13-14.sql contains the SQL commands to achieve this for PostgreSQL. To apply the changes, go to the source directory, and run: psql -f etc/database_schema_13-14.sql [DSpace database name] -h localhost For Oracle [dspace-1.4.x-source]/etc/oracle/database_schema_13-14.sql should be run on the DSpace database to update the schema. Rebuild the search indices: [dspace]/bin/index-all Copy the .war Web application files in [dspace-1.4-source]/build to the webapps sub-directory of your servlet container (e.g. Tomcat). e.g.: cp [dspace-1.4-source]/build/*.war [tomcat]/webappsIf you're using Tomcat, you need to delete the directories corresponding to the old .war files. For example, if dspace.war is installed in [tomcat]/webapps/dspace.war, you should delete the [tomcat]/webapps/dspace directory. Otherwise, Tomcat will continue to use the old code in that directory. Restart Tomcat. --------------------- I am not a technical person, but I think that these might help. Come and contribute to the Repository Fringe (www.repositoryfringe.org) at the start of the Edinburgh Festival. The Repository Fringe is a unique venue for discussion, dissemination and networking, being run on the Edinburgh Festival Fringe model - anyone is allowed to come along and put on a show! In our case "a show" is likely to be a discussion about an emerging issue, or a group attempt to come to some concensus about solving a problem, or a co-ordinated demonstration of some new ideas. The Fringe workshop will facilitate and support participation by offering a structured format of themed sessions which you can pick and choose to take part in. The hour-long themed sessions will include: Poster bazaar - design a poster and set up a stall at the poster bazaar. Carboot-sale presentation - bring along a talk and educate us about your project. Birds of a Feather sessions - flock together to form your own discussion group. Plenary - invited speakers will stimulate us with a provocative viewpoint. The programme will be negotiated online with participants at http://www.repositoryfringe.org/ PLEASE contact us AS SOON AS POSSIBLE at the email on the website (www.repositoryfringe.org) to allocate your space and register the AV requirements needed for your 'performance'. --- Les Carr & Theo Andrew RepositoryFringe is supported by JISC and seeks involvement from repository platforms, partners and environments. -- The University of Edinburgh is a charitable body, registered in Scotland, with registration number SC005336. In addition to modifying the license submission screen, we need to decide how to store this information. If DSpace supported dc.rights.license as a metadata field, that would be a logical place to store this information. However, it does not appear to be supported, so we are considering using dc.rights. But that's a possibly ambiguous use of that unqualified field. I was wondering if anyone else has already implemented a solution for this problem, and if so how you went about it. Best, Jennifer ~~~~~~~~~~~~Forwarded Message~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ [From Lan Ye, whu1983 at yahoo.com.cn] I am a post-graduate student from Chinese Academy of Science. My major is library science. Now in order to complete my thesis, I am involved in a survey about the library job positions, especially for the newly emerging positions in libraries. 1?Have you had a digital repository in your library? What?s the name? when did you create it ? 2?And did you create a new position like digital repository librarian or a new department to take up the work around the digital repository? 3?If not, who or which department now in your library is responsible for the maintenance of the digital repository? And have you ever considered to create a new position? 4?Have you had any position or a department about scholarly communication ? That is ,a position or a department working around a digital repository or open access or scholarly publishing or e- publishing. If not, which department in your library takes the responsibility of scholarly communication? Thank you very very much! Good luck to you! It will take you a little time to answer these questions. Thank you for your sincere help really. However, it does not appear to be > supported, so we are considering using dc.rights. But that's a possibly > ambiguous use of that unqualified field. You should be able to add the dc.rights.license field by using the metadata registry editor. Log in to DSpace as an administrator, go to the administrate menu, and select Metadata Registry. Then select Dublin Core, and then use the option of adding a new field.
