Which version of ant do you use?

The Java Version might also be of interest.

If this is a clone like blackdown, this
might be a reason. Although you usually
dont get SUN Java with Linux as default,
you can sign a license agreement on their
page and download a package that contains
a small binary part but has to be compiled
on your machine. This is less daunting then
its sounds but takes some time. But this
way, you get really the same Java that
everybody else uses. A recent ant version
should be already on your system and I
havent seen different requirements for
1.4.x as compared to 1.3.x (ant 1.6.5
should be fine). Tomcat is not yet
involved during compilation of DSpace
and thus the version is not relevant
at that point.
