From scott.yeadon at anu.edu.au Mon Sep 3 02:06:18 2007 From: scott.yeadon at anu.edu.au (Scott Yeadon) Date: Mon, 03 Sep 2007 16:06:18 +1000 Subject: [Dspace-general] AONS Pilot Service Launched Message-ID: <46DBA45A.8050305@anu.edu.au> For the information of list members. AONS Pilot Service Launched =================== A beta version of the Automatic Obsolescence Notification Service (AONS) has been launched as a pilot service. The service provides support to repositories anywhere around Australia (or in fact globally) for managing format obsolescence of digital materials. Users can register with the service by providing a URL to a repository's format scan summary. The AONS service will display the summary and allow a repository manager to compare the formats of items in their repository with information from format registries such as PRONOM and Library of Congress. These registries flag any formats that are likely to become obsolete. Repository managers can then make curation decisions about any items at risk, such as upgrading their formats. By downloading and installing an AONS locally, an institution can also take advantage of a pilot risk metrics implementation. This feature requires manual data entry in order to assign weightings to particular formats to create a risk profile for each format. Over time, by sharing this information between AONS instances it may be possible to build up accurate risk profiles for many common formats. The AONS software is the result of the AONS II project funded under APSR and developed by David Pearson, David Levy and Matthew Walker from the National Library of Australia (NLA) with an administrative user interface developed by David Berriman at ANU. The software is able to be downloaded from Sourceforge at _http://sourceforge.net/projects/aons_ and a mailing list is also available for support and feedback. As this is a beta release we welcome feedback to the Sourceforge mailing list to inform our testing which will continue until mid-September. Please try out the pilot service by sending an email to _cosi at apsr.edu.au_ to register with the service, and tell us which institution you are from. Any quieries can also be sent to this address. Further information about the AONS Project can be seen at _http://www.apsr.edu.au/aons2/_ From ssadler at ucalgary.ca Tue Sep 4 15:23:24 2007 From: ssadler at ucalgary.ca (Shawna Sadler) Date: Tue, 04 Sep 2007 13:23:24 -0600 Subject: [Dspace-general] Canadian Institutes of Health Research Message-ID: <46DDB0AC.3070908@ucalgary.ca> The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) has just issued this announcement: Open access to health research publications: CIHR unveils new policy http://www.irsc.gc.ca/e/34851.html Les Institutes de recherche et sant? du Canada ? publi? pour diffusion imm?diate: Libre acc?s aux publications sur les recherches en sant? : Les IRSC lancent une nouvelle politique http://www.irsc.gc.ca/f/34851.html Policy details in brief: "grant recipients must make every effort to ensure that their peer- reviewed research articles are freely available as soon as possible after publication...by depositing the article in an archive, such as PubMed Central or an institutional repository, and/or by publishing results in an open access journal. A growing number of journals already meet these requirements and CIHR-funded researchers are encouraged to consider publishing in these journals...grant recipients are now required to deposit bioinformatics, atomic, and molecular coordinate data, as already required by most journals, into the appropriate public database immediately upon publication of research results.. Researchers are encouraged to make use of the SHERPA RoMEO Publisher Copyright Policies and Self-Archiving service to determine whether publishers policies are compliant with the policy, and the policy clarifies that article processing fees for open access publishing are an eligible expense under the Use of Grant Funds". Notable quotes from the Press Release: Timely and unrestricted access to research findings is a defining feature of science, and is essential for advancing knowledge and accelerating our understanding of human health and disease," stated Dr. Alan Bernstein, President of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. "With the development of the internet it is now feasible to disseminate globally and easily the results of research that we fund. As a publicly-funded organization, we have a responsibility to ensure that new advances in health research are available to those who need it and can use it - researchers world-wide, the public and policy makers. This open access policy will serve as a model for other funding agencies, said Dr. James E. Till of the Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto [Chair of the Task Force that developed this policy]. The policy will leverage taxpayers' investment by accelerating research and by fostering its broader application. My comments on the CIHR policy as yet another example of Canadian Leadership in the Open Access Movement: http://poeticeconomics.blogspot.com/2007/09/canadian-institutes-of- health-research.html The library community in Canada can be proud of our participation, through strong pro-open access-submissions, in the consultation leading to this policy. -- Shawna Sadler Coordinator, Digital Initiatives Libraries and Cultural Resources University of Calgary Phone: (403) 220-3739 Email: ssadler at ucalgary.ca From es444 at cam.ac.uk Wed Sep 5 05:06:19 2007 From: es444 at cam.ac.uk (Elin Stangeland) Date: Wed, 05 Sep 2007 10:06:19 +0100 Subject: [Dspace-general] Developer for DSpace@Cambridge Message-ID: <46DE718B.9000207@cam.ac.uk> DSpace Developer Grade 8 Salary range: ?30,012-?40,335 http://www.cam.ac.uk/cs/jobs/#dspace The University of Cambridge's institutional data and document repository system uses DSpace, a complex Java application running on Tomcat/PostgreSQL. The Java Version might also be of interest. If this is a clone like blackdown, this might be a reason. Although you usually dont get SUN Java with Linux as default, you can sign a license agreement on their page and download a package that contains a small binary part but has to be compiled on your machine. This is less daunting then its sounds but takes some time. But this way, you get really the same Java that everybody else uses. A recent ant version should be already on your system and I havent seen different requirements for 1.4.x as compared to 1.3.x (ant 1.6.5 should be fine). Tomcat is not yet involved during compilation of DSpace and thus the version is not relevant at that point. But then, it tells you: It could not find a suitable regexp matcher. The architecture of the tool is modular and it requires some supporting libs. To ensure that everything is fine, ant has a switch for testing the environment. Run ant -diagnostics. There should be listed something like this: /Your/path/to/apache-ant/lib/ant-apache-regexp.jar I bet the diagnostics will report problems and you can solve them by running aptitude to either upgrade or uninstall and reinstall ant. It states that it is not available. The output proves me right, including further advice to use aptitude to correct the issue (veery proud ;-)). Basically, nothing is available. Never saw such a long list. Mine is about three obscure items I never heard about before. As I know Debian (and Ubuntu is basically Debian), they split up each software in multiple packages to allow for a highly customized installation. There are rare cases, where this more of a burden then a blessing. Looks like this is the case here. Again, use aptitude to install missing parts. Search for ant. I bet, you will find more then one package such as ant-basic (which is probably the stuff you have installed already) ant-optional or some- thing like that. Install the additional stuff that looks like it could solve your problem. As a last resort, install a fresh binary from the apache site. While this will probably solve your issues this time, it renders your package system registry invalid and this will haunt back some day. Best way to ruin a great system gradually. That is what developers do. Now take look into *what* they had changed: You see that the block containing the regex was introduced then. Obviously, the regex functionality had not been used anywhere before. Just as the other fourty or fifty features mentioned in your diagnostics output that were missing on your system. As long as they did not get used and diagnostics were not run, you just could not see that these modules were missing. But you had a partial install of ant already then. There is no fault with anybody involved. Developers tell ant to be a requirement. If you download ant from the ant homepage, you get a complete ant as with most package managers. Debian/Ubuntu is different in that regard and the developers using other systems are not due to know that. As a user of Ubuntu, you have to find out about the specifics of this great platform. And in the end, although obviously not commonly used, the software works with your setup. Thats great I think (well its Java, too). I should have caught this problem, as I documented the Ubuntu install (including the ant-optional.jar requirement) on the DSpace wiki a year ago: http://wiki.dspace.org/index.php/Installing_DSpace_on_Ubuntu_6.06_%28LTS%29 -- Dan Scott Laurentian University From gsw55 at cornell.edu Fri Sep 14 14:44:21 2007 From: gsw55 at cornell.edu (Glen Wiley) Date: Fri, 14 Sep 2007 14:44:21 -0400 Subject: [Dspace-general] Authority files Message-ID: <46EAD685.8070106@cornell.edu> Hello, Has anyone made better progress on the incorporation of local authority files into Dspace? Message-ID: I am a new DSpace administrator so forgive me if this is a common issue that has been discussed previously. An individual at my university wishes to put some video files in our DSpace archive. This brings up a few issues such as how the user will view the files, what codecs to employ, etc. The initial issue, however, is that the individual wishes the video files to be able to be streamed from our university's streaming server. His initial idea was to store an html page within DSpace that linked to the video on our streaming server. I explained to him that this would be disconnecting the data described in the archive with the actual data itself, which essentially defeats the purpose of the archive. I suggested that perhaps storing the non-streaming file in the archive, and using the dc.relation field to link to the related streaming file would be the most elegant solution. He mentioned that he had run into issues typing in URLs into metadata fields in DSpace in the past, so I'm not sure if this is possible or not. Additionally, the relation field does not appear to be present in the submission page -- is this enabled by default, or do I have to add it to the submission page manually? I have inherited this archive from another individual so I'm not sure as to the extensiveness of the customizations that have taken place. If anyone else has developed a good solution to a problem like this, feel free to let me know! Thanks much. DAF is available for download at http://wiki.bibalex.org/DAFWiki and is offered under the GPL license as an open source application so that the user can freely utilize it or even make necessary modifications to match specific needs. DAF v2.0 can be considered as an all-in-one solution for any digitization system. It provides all the necessary tools required to manage the whole process of a digitization workflow, including its various phases, user management, file movement and archiving. It provides the flexibility to manage multiple simultaneous projects with a diversity of materials such as books, journals, newspapers, manuscripts, unbound materials, audio, video, and slides. DAF v2.0 allows easy integration of any tool used to perform functions of the workflow, such as the OCR, image processing, etc. It can be integrated with the current tools used at an organization. DAF v2.0 is highly reliable and can be configured for large and challenging digitization projects. The system is fully deployed in BA digitization laboratory and has been working smoothly for over a year. Key features: * The system is capable of defining different workflows for various types of objects: Images, books, slides, etc. Each workflow contains different phases (Scanning, OCR, PDF encoding, Backup, etc). * DAF v2.0 is an all-in-one system that provides all the necessary tools required for administration, digitization operation, reporting and archiving. * DAF v2.0 has flexible integration with any source of metadata such as ILS or a library digital document repository. This integration is possible through Check-in and Check-out plug-in modules that can be added at any time. * DAF v2.0 has the ability to define pre-phase and post-phase checks and actions by simply editing an XML definition for a phase. * DAF v2.0 can be tailored to any environment. A developer can add code snippets to be executed pre-phase or post-phase to accomplish specific tasks. * DAF v2.0 supports both manual and automated operations. Different workflow operations can be invoked from the command line to enable batch processing. * The flexible workflow supports ingesting a job in the middle of the workflow. The administrator can also change the job's normal flow. * DAF v2.0 tracks the history of the job's life cycle. It records time stamped actions applied to the job, including the user who performed the action and the workstation on which the action was performed. * User's access level defines which functions are available for each user, up to the level of disabling a button * DAF v2.0 is easy to install and configure. For more information, please visit http://wiki.bibalex.org/DAFWiki or send an email to daf at bibalex.org The Digital Assets Repository (DAR) team. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I would like to introduce myself, I am Mark Diggory, DSpace Systems Manager at MIT and a commiter member of the DSpace Developer Community. Firstly, your system is an interesting platform that appears to be architecturally a number of Swing clients working over the network with a central MySQL database. Is this assumption correct? Secondly, what is your organizations position concerning interoperability and integration with other IR platforms and with the diverse and custom software ecosystem that libraries and other organizations employ to meet their needs? Its one thing to promote a product as an all-in-one solution, as a Systems Manager, I'm more interested in how your product fits into the existing ecology of Open Source and commercial tooling that organizations already have a significant investment in. Concerns that your product raises. 1.) Some might feel GPL licensing is a barrier (no matter how real or imaginary) to uptake and reuse of a tool in the software ecosystem of the organization. I've looked at your source distribution and discovered its license is actually LGPL, is this accurate? 2.) Any "workflow" system today will need to have a strong focus on interoperability/integration with other Open Source and Commercial Platforms. What avenues for such interoperability/integration are available in your product? These questions/concerns are not meant to criticize your efforts, but help us as the community better understand your platforms capabilities and your organizations stance in participating within the larger educational/institutional software ecosystem. Policies/IT is the new community/collection created and "Policy One", "Policy Two", and "Policy Three" where item mappped from Admin/IT/Polices to Policies/IT. Admin IT Polices Policy One Policy Two Policy Three Policies IT Policy One Policy Two Policy Three It seems that search at the collection level for those documents "item mapped" from the original community collection does not follow the mapping or "link". As far as I know, there is no general approach to name authority control via the DSpace submission UI today. You're probably remembering the experiment we did with OCLC using their name authority Web Service, which worked quite well except for the fact that most of our DSpace submitters aren't published book authors so they weren't in the authority file. That's the main problem with authority control in IRs... who has the authoritative list of names? If you have a name authority list to use, then if it's small you could make the author field a drop-down list. If it's large (as I'm sure it is in your case) then you would need a Web Service like OCLC's that contained all your names. MIT is working on something like that with our campus HR system, but we don't have it working yet -- maybe in six months? And if it works here then you might be able to do something similar for your own institution. Does it time out? Does it show e.g. a generic Apache page? It might be that there is another server already running on port 80. In this case you have to decide whether you want to stop that server. You will probably have to change your init scripts accordingly depending on the platform you are running on. Second, you have to run tomcat on port 80. It is as simpple as removing two numbers from your server.xml and restarting B U T dont do that without knowing what you are doing. Tomcat is not intended to run publicly in its default setup. E.g. The server just wont restart with that change because port 80 is a privileged port. You would have to run as root which is really a bad idea. Apache is started by a wrapper script to prevent this and this is the way to go with tomcat too. The wrapper has to be installed separately though and is called commons-daemon. No, you are not done with this, you should also think about using the Apache portable runtime apr for various reasons. > > maxThreads="150" minSpareThreads="25" > maxSpareThreads="75" > enableLookups="true" acceptCount="100" > connectionTimeout="20000" disableUploadTimeout="true" > URIEncoding="UTF-8" /> The setup described before is not the common solution. Most people prefer to integrate with Apache using mod-jk. This works flawlessly when running Apache2 but has some intricacies if you are still running Apache 1.3 (which is fine other- wise). Also, you have to configure tomcat logging to get comparable information about server usage as with apache default install. That said, what you want is not for beginners and your question makes clear that you still have a long way ahead. Admin is not something you become overnight. I am not proficient in french, but your address points to an institute where you should be able to get the kind of support you need to do what you want. If this is all for testing and learning, my best advice is that you stick with the port number. If you are willing to learn you will know when your time has come to run a public service on your own. First, some assumptions to be mentioned, and then some suggestions: 1. There is not DC or QDC for authority data. 2. Authority data currently is stored in either MARC21 format or in some type of XML format using MARC21 schema for example. 3. Current DSpace Postgres is not storing the data in QDC or DC. Only upon item export is the data formatted in DC/MODS, etc. Suggestions/possibilities: 1. Create tables in Postgres to store authority data. (i.e., authors, and their cross references (see and see alsos). (Subject headings, and their appropriate thesaurie). 2. Records could be imported using our regular import tools--of course with some adjustments. Crosswalking from MARC21 to DC is a bit a problem but there are tools out there to do that. And of course, manual creation via our usual UI (jsp or Manakin) 3. Integrate these tables into the browse indexes as "informational headings" for the established term, and cross references for the "see" and "see also" terms. Since DC or QDC has no define structure for authority records, perhaps it is time to think outside the box. Yes, I am aware of the newer features in DSpace 1.4.x that can give browse-ability to theasuri, but how many theasuri are in the format specified? (LCSH, MeSH, and AAT are not). We are thinking of having a student manually code a file with AAT in it, but that file will be MASSIVE to say the least. And then someone will want me to have LCSH coded into XML for their use. While it was at least 5 to 10 years before authority control caught on with library ILS vendors back in the 1980s/1990s, this should be given great consideration for IRs since hind sight is 20/20, and many libraries are still cleaning up the messes caused by the lack of authority control. Stay tuned for launch of these 2 modules in the next month. regards, Michele Kimpton Michele at dspace.org From michele at dspace.org Fri Sep 28 10:35:12 2007 From: michele at dspace.org (Michele Kimpton) Date: Fri, 28 Sep 2007 10:35:12 -0400 Subject: [Dspace-general] Transfer of copyright to the Foundation Message-ID: <8865B291-DFD2-4ED9-BD6E-3BF053AF9BD7@dspace.org> Dear members of the DSpace community, It's now seven years since HP and MIT first collaborated to create the initial version of DSpace. Since then, further developments by HP, MIT and a significant constituency of contributors have refined, added to and improved that initial version. DSpace has been widely adopted by the research library community worldwide so that DSpace is the leading opensource institutional repository systems in use today. In 2006 HP and MIT convened an advisory board comprised of representatives from organizations who were using or developing DSpace. This group recommended that an independent not-for-profit organization, the DSpace Foundation, be established to continue to promote and develop the DSpace system on behalf of the user community. This year, HP and MIT have set up the DSpace foundation for this purpose. As a result of the size and complexity the Dspace codebase has now acquired, as well as the significant DSpace user constituency, both HP and MIT now feel that it is time to pass over stewardship of the DSpace codebase to the new DSpace Foundation so that the Foundation can support the ongoing development of the code and seek funding that will be necessary to implement enhancements in the future. Both HP and MIT are still heavily involved as board members of the foundation, and both organizations are actively working to enhance the DSpace platform through code contributions and research. As the joint owners of all copyright in Dspace, HP and MIT have transfered all copyright to the Dspace Foundation to enable it to achieve these aims. The code remains under the BSD license and the Foundation will ensure the code continues to be opensource and freely available. We now write to you to inform you, in your role as a contributor to the Dspace codebase, of this of this exciting new development, and to thank you once again for your contribution. We hope that you will feel inspired and encouraged to continue to contribute in the future to add to the success of Dspace. If you have questions or would like more information please contact contributor at dspace.org. regards, Nick Wainwright, HP Labs MacKenzie Smith, MIT Michele Kimpton, DSpace Foundation -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
