You will gather experience with that and you will know precisely which amount of experience and knowledge you throw away of something else in case you decide to do so. In general every distro has its rough sides and its sweet spots. The most important decision you take is probably the package manager the distro is using. There are two major directions to go, one of them the debian way, the other redhat. I am in the former camp and there Debian itself or Ubuntu are the most common with Ubuntu definetly being more friendly, but you have to read debian docs always as well if you decide to use Ubuntu and run into trouble. If you decide for the redhat side, then the original is one obvious choice or the completely free version Fedora. Then there is CentOS which is kind of the Enterprise flavor of Fedora and very popular recently. In Germany there is a historic prevalence for the Novell SuSE or OpenSuSE, where SuSE is equivalent to RedHat Enterprise and OpenSuSE to Fedora. But why would you choose that? Ask your friend and pick either Fedora/CentOS or Debian/Ubuntu. A third track are sourcecode based Distros such as Slackware or the more recent and friendly Gentoo, but I bet you dont want to start with that. Then last option is to choose the BSD track. It is an entirely separate world for the base distro and kernel but above, everything is rather similar. Some reasons for BSD are security and clean design, not necessarily fastpaced development. If security is your first concern than you have no alternative to OpenBSD and the small and vivid community around the knowledgeable but excentric guru Theo de Raadt. If you run PC hardware, then the most common and friendly distro is FreeBSD, NetBSD is more of a technology demo for portability of code and no pratical alternative. FreeBSD has the ports tree as a package systems which is source based (see Gentoo) and works brilliantly. I like FreeBSD best besides Debian but have not run DSpace on that platform. In my experience, Ubuntu was by far the easiest installation. Additionally, I find maintaining, securing, and updating an Ubuntu system easier. I used 6.06 LTS (Long Term Support) which offers security updates for 5 years. There is another Ubuntu LTS distribution due to arrive in April of 2008, I believe. The most simple solution usually used is to rename the dspace.war to ROOT.war before dropping it into the webapps dir. Obviously, dspace.cfg has to be updated to the new url as well and the app to be rebuild using ant update. I guess ant init_configs is not sufficient but I might be wrong. Then, there are side effects. You have to remove the default page of tomcat before doing so, which implies creating bookmarks to places such as the manager app in your browser before removing this page. If you dont like to rename the .war file every time you update, you can change the build.xml section with the build_wars target accordingly. I use this solution and it works fine. I was too lazy to fiddle with server.xml and web.xml which would certainly be the "clean" solution. The description assumes that you are running tomcat without apache. There should be more descriptions on how to do this in the wiki. I guess I picked this trick up there. So if I published two papers and one paper lists me as Hutchinson, Alvin and another lists me as Hutchinson, A.R. then my DSpace entries would reflect this and there would be two entries for the same person. However I feel like consistent retrieval of items by a particular author requires consistent naming. Any thoughts on this? Do you think any of the contributors to your repositories have a problem with normalizing or standardizing their name regardless of how it appears on the article they've published? Also, does anyone have any scripts or codes (or advice) for replacing creator names in the dcvalue table of the DSpace database? I would imagine that an sql script along the lines of: "update dcvalue set text_value=Hutchinson, Alvin R. where text_value=Hutchinson, A.R." would be an adequate routine to standardize the name. But there is an itemsbyauthor table that may need updating. Are there any other tables or data that would also need to be updated in the database? I think I tried something like the script above once on a test server but it didn't work out for some reason. I may post the second part of this question to the Dspace-Tech list as well since it may be more appropriate there, but I thought that as long as I had your attention . . . . Any advice appreciated. They don't do that when they cite in a subsequent publication; it's a matter of journal style. Library catalogues don't do that with their books; that's what name authority files are all about. I don't see why scholars should expect to do that anywhere else. Ignore 'em, say I. > However I feel like consistent retrieval of items by a particular author > requires consistent naming. Any thoughts on this? I agree; it's just a tremendous pain in the posterior to do and to keep current. I'm looking at a name-authority project (if the Manakin redesign doesn't kill me first) that's going to take *months*. The last one I did -- on a much smaller repository -- took weeks. Mind you, I was obsessive about finding full names, which in the journal world is an inordinate hassle. If you're not, then authority control reduces to figuring out which name representations belong together, a much easier problem. Do you think any of > the contributors to your repositories have a problem with normalizing or > standardizing their name regardless of how it appears on the article > they've published? They might. They can argue with me if they want to. My money's on them not arguing. You'll want to fix the itemsbyauthor table as well, as you surmised. update itemsbyauthor set author='Hutchinson, Alvin R.' where author='Hutchinson, A.R.'; update itemsbyauthor set sort_author='hutchinson, alvin r.' where sort_author='hutchinson, a.r.'; And then run an index_all. There's a new cataloging system called DAArch from the Art Institute of Chicago and Kristine Fallon Associates (http://sourceforge.net/projects/daarch/) that is integrated with DSpace as the repository/archive for digital images. The two systems are both Java applications so they play well together. DAArch supports the CDWA schema now, but would also work for VRA3 (or so I'm told) and has the possibility of authority control (AAT, etc.) too. So if you got a developer who could help get this set up for you, definitely take a look. I think the consulting company that worked with the AIC is setting up a demo system for it now, so maybe in a few weeks you can see it without having to install it yourself. For example, when they submit an item, Dspace sends an e-mail to the submitter with the message included in the /config/emails/submit_archive file. However, I tried to include an image (with HTML), but it was unsuccessful. Has anybody else tried that? Any response could be appreciated. Thanks in advance. -Fk -- Filippos Kolovos Software Systems Analyst & Engineer M.Sc. After talking to several participants, the feedback I got was it was the best user group meeting thus far due to the richness of content presented. As it was my first official DSpace user group meeting as the Executive Director of DSpace Foundation, I did a presentation outlining the role and projects to be undertaken by the Foundation. You can find this presentation http://www.aepic.it/conf/ viewabstract.php?id=326&cf=11 for those interested in learning about what activities the Foundation plans on initiating on behalf of the community over the next year. I would like to especially thank Imma ( from FAO), Paola ( from Caspur) and all their staff for doing a great job organizing and hosting the conference!
