Hello,
We are considering using DSpace, but we have a few questions concerning some
of the features. Is there a way to upload a file and make it somehow
private? We don't want everyone to be able to view the file so we want it to
be hidden somehow... maybe if it doesnt show up in search results or
something like that, or perhaps password protect it...
Does DSpace provide such features?

After loading the file you could set READ permissions on the file so
that only a particular group of people could access it. If the file is
accessed, the user will be asked to authenticate, and will only be given
access if he/she is a member of the group. If the group has no members,
then no one but the dspace sys admin will have access to the file. Does
this work for you?

Hello,
Oregon State University is considering changing the DSpace software
settings to allow for submissions of file sizes larger than the default
512 MB maximum file size. We would like to submit several mpeg files
that are up to 2 GB.
Are there any other insitutions that have done so and if so, did you
experience any problems?
Thanks in advance for any assistance,

We configured our instance to be able to upload the max integer value
size:
2,147,483,647
But we changed the code to accept a long type for this configuration
parameter, in case we needed a higher upload amount. Of course the
bigger the file the slower the upload. You'll have to experiment with
your instance and see if the rate of upload is acceptable. For us it
was. I will also point out that you should make sure that the temp
upload dir where the file is to be uploaded to before going in the
assetstore is big enough, or things will hang. That parameter is
upload.temp.dir and it lives in dspace.cfg.
Hope this helps!

Below is the code I added/changed to be able to accept an upload size
bigger than integer, in case you are interested.

facilitate awareness and discovery
* Personalisation technologies (e.g. social tagging, folksonomies,
RSS, microformats)
* Metadata creation, usage and interoperability
* Semantic web issues
* Data mining, text harvesting, and dynamic formatting
* User generated content and its relation to publisher's content

ABOUT ELPUB
The ELPUB 2008 conference will keep the tradition of the previous
international conferences on electronic publishing, held in the
United Kingdom (in 1997 and 2001), Hungary (1998), Sweden (1999),
Russia (2000), the Czech Republic (2002), Portugal (2003), Brazil
(2004), Belgium (2005), Bulgaria (2006) and Austria (2007), which is
to bring together researchers, lecturers, librarians, developers,
business executives, entrepreneurs, managers, users and all those
interested in issues regarding electronic publishing in a wide
variety of contexts. These include the human, cultural, economic,
social, technological, legal, commercial, and other relevant aspects
that such an exciting theme encompasses.
Three distinguishing features of this conference are: broad scope of
topics which creates a unique atmosphere of active exchange and
learning about various aspects of scholarly communications and
electronic publishing; combination of general and technical issues;
and a condensed procedure of submission, revision and publication of
proceedings which guarantees presentations of most recent work.
ELPUB 2008 offers a variety of activities, such as workshops,
tutorials, panel debates, poster presentation and demonstrations. A
variety of social events and sight-seeing tours will be available to
participants (at additional costs). Please see the conference web
site for details.
Conference Location: Toronto, Canada. Toronto is one of the most
vibrant cities in North-America. It has a large multicultural
population, is the largest city in Canada and the 5th-largest city in
North America. There are many world class galleries and museums
across the city and you will find authentic cuisines from around the
world at reasonable prices.
Conference Host: Knowledge Media Design Institute (KMDI), University
of Toronto. KMDI is a graduate research and teaching institute at
the University of Toronto, and an intellectual incubator fostering
cross-disciplinary initiatives across the university. The work of the
institute spans both the scientific study of the ways in which media
shapes and is shaped by human activity, and the practical work of
founding an interdisciplinary nexus for design and evaluation of both
media and media technologies. KMDI has acknowledged leadership,
substantial research programs and broad participation in three major
areas: collaboration and collaboration technologies, the phenomenon
of openness and new forms of knowledge production and dissemination,
and public policy and citizen engagement.

training materials
-Launch of an online Newsletter monthly which will promote the work
being done in the community, and give updates on what projects the
foundation is undertaking
-Survey of the user community to get input on how the foundation can
best serve their needs for the future in developing programs, tools,
partnerships ect.
-developing a master list of all DSpace sites and contacts worldwide
to reference for collaboration, promotion, input ect.
Lauren is the webmaster for the dspace.org website and in charge of
infrastructure, layout, new sections ect. in regards to the website
and any other communication tools we add to the Foundation. Lauren

Hello! My name is Valorie Hollister and I'm the new community outreach
manager for DSpace Foundation.
We are in the process of setting up some new resources on www.dspace.org.
We would like to develop a list of new DSpace installations. If you
have a new repository (launched witin the last 6 months or
soon-to-launch), please email me a link and a brief description of the
content/purpose. This list will be helpful to those contemplating
building their own DSpace repositories.
We are also in the process of putting together a more comprehensive
and informative list of DSpace service providers
(contrators/consultants) who can help institutions set up/modify a
repositories. If you have not already been contacted about this list,
but you would like to be included, please email me. We hope to post
service provider list in the next few weeks.
I'm looking forward to working with all of you!

Why is a "vanilla" site the benchmark, when hardly anyone is content
with that? A realistic cost/time estimate needs to include design and
customization work.

Hi Dorothea,
I get many requests from organizations evaluating DSpace wanting to
know the level of effort to install right out of the box, without
making any customizations. It is not a BENCHMARK but a BASELINE. If
you would like to help us identify all the useful and important
customizations and the level of effort required I welcome your
input. The Foundation is just in the stages of getting a team
together so we can put process and support in to represent the total
needs of the community to be successful running DSpace. However, we
need the help of the community to do this . Given your experience,
passion and know how it would be great if you could work with us in a
positive fashion.

Ah, I see. That makes sense.

I may not be quite the right person, as when I was a DSpace newbie I
was running on a somewhat nontraditional setup (Mac OS X Server).
However, I'm happy to offer what I can. (On the other hand, it may
turn out useful to know that a librarian without sysadmin training can
learn to do this, so...) I can also pass on specific questions to the
person who does the real work on MINDS at UW.

Hello Valorie,
welcome to the DSpace community.
There is a list of instances on:
http://wiki.dspace.org/index.php/DspaceInstances
(btw. the second most popular page on the wiki)
You may see the newest by viewing it's history.
If you want a complete list in another format, I can sent you one.
There is also the repository66 page, thanx to Stuart Lewis:
http://maps.repository66.org/
In my opinion a comprehense resource with complete info about dspace
installations would be good. I fear just an excerpt of instances in yet
another list will cause the lists to be out of sync soon.
I'm thinking in terms of a register like the one for OAI Data providers,
with some base information and contact data, but also information about
customization grade.
In my experience people like to contact folk nearby as this offers the
possiblity to drop by, see the instance in action and ask loads of
questions. Or at least they want someone within their locale (i18n).
Sunny greetings

Maybe a geographical mash-up of the data from the DSpace instance list is in
order for dspace.org/DSpace federation pages?
(and if I allow my dev/mind to wander even further, perhaps a simple "Register
Your DSpace Instance with the Federation" admin panel could be included in
future DSpace releases. Maybe even in an opt-out fashion?)

Sandy -
For now we are just putting together a list of most recent DSpace
instances in order to highlight them on dspace.org. We hope that
references from such a list will help quantify for others what it
takes to get a DSpace site up and running.
A longer term project is the 'master' list of DSpace instances which
will combine the wiki and ROAR lists and include other known instances
as well. I agree that it needs to include things like geography, among
other things to be truly useful to the community. I welcome
additional suggestions.

...it's interesting you should say that!
Of course there is already http://maps.repository66.org/ which does this for
all repository platforms, but I have been working with Michelle and Lauren
at the DSpace Foundation to provide them with a data feed of just the DSpace
repositories. This is in place, we just need to get the website sorted to
display it.
If anyone wants to add their repository to the map, register it with ROAR
(http://roar.eprints.org/) and optionally OpenDOAR
(http://www.opendoar.org/) and the mashup will do its work and display your
repository along with its growth statistics.
Thanks,
Stuart

Dear DSpace community,
I would like to introduce to you two new hires to the DSpace
Foundation, Valorie Hollister (Val at dspace.org) and Lauren L'Esperance
(Lauren at dspace.org).
Valorie is the community outreach manager and her role is to work
closely with the community to promote DSpace, and develop programs
and tools to support to the DSpace user( non technical) community.
Some of the key initial projects Val will be working on are-
-Management of content on the website of interest to the community-
such as the "featured DSpace site", news, events, publications and
training materials
-Launch of an online Newsletter monthly which will promote the work
being done in the community, and give updates on what projects the
foundation is undertaking
-Survey of the user community to get input on how the foundation can
best serve their needs for the future in developing programs, tools,
partnerships ect.
-developing a master list of all DSpace sites and contacts worldwide
to reference for collaboration, promotion, input ect.
Lauren is the webmaster for the dspace.org website and in charge of
infrastructure, layout, new sections ect. in regards to the website
and any other communication tools we add to the Foundation. Lauren
works for DSpace one day per week, so her time is limited.
In the coming month of January please look for the survey and welcome
Val and Lauren to the DSpace community.
sincerely,
DSpace Executive Director

Dear DSpace community,
The Foundation is trying to put a list together of most recent DSpace
sites, so we can highlight these on our website and quantify for
others what it takes to get a DSpace site up and running from a
technical and non technical point of view. If you have recently
launched a "vanilla" installation of DSpace please let us know.

Hello! My name is Valorie Hollister and I'm the new community outreach
manager for DSpace Foundation.
We are in the process of setting up some new resources on
www.dspace.org.

Dorothea

Hi,
My IT manager would like to know if anyone out there is running an older version of Red Hat that was working with a fully Red Hat Enterprise License (RHEL) supported base? We are aware of the entry in the wiki titled "Installing DSpace on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 as well as "Are there any tips on running DSpace on RedHat/Fedora Core Linux?."
I am curious if anyone would recommend a different operating system environment that might be easier to set up? Thanks.

I run my development and test environments on RHEL AS 4, and have no
problems with the OS. However, I install the rest of the software stack
manually:
- Postgres 8.2.x from the binary RPMs on http://www.postgresql.org/
(there's one little protection glitch in 8.2.5 -- note you need these:)
postgresql-8.2.5-1PGDG.rhel4
postgresql-libs-8.2.5-1PGDG.rhel4
postgresql-server-8.2.5-1PGDG.rhel4
- Java 1.6 from Sun (java.sun.com)
- Tomcat 5.5 direct from its online distro http://tomcat.apache.org/
- maven from http://maven.apache.org/download.html
You'll need apache httpd as well, which ought to be available as an RPM
from redhat. I've had no problems, but my sites don't get a lot of traffic..
