In this context DSpace is assumed to be a fairly standard Institutional Repository, as managed by a library or other archival organization within an educational institution. The paper discusses how the two systems might be used together, and describes some of the technical issues to be tackled. CARET is undertaking some of that work for Sakai this fall, to make DSpace collections available to Sakai via its Resource Tool. Hopefully other parts of the development roadmap will be undertaken over the next year or two, so that digital archives can become even more valuable resources to their institutions. The paper can be found on the DSpace wiki here http://wiki.dspace.org/SakaiIntegration Thanks, MacKenzie Smith MIT Libraries From purban at kfa-inc.com Sat Sep 2 12:06:55 2006 From: purban at kfa-inc.com (purban@kfa-inc.com) Date: Sat, 02 Sep 2006 11:06:55 -0500 Subject: [Dspace-general] Dspace-general Digest, Vol 38, Issue 1 Message-ID: -- This is an auto-reply message -- Please note that I am out of the office and will not have access to e-mail through September 15. On the default submission screens, there is a single input box for "Citation," but users could forget to enter an element of the citation or use a non-standard format. It seems we could gather more consistent citation information by prompting the submitter for each element of the citation, similar to the interface for entering a citation in RefWorks and other personal bibliographic management software. Similarly, metadata could be structured to display each citation element individually, as in a Medline record. For instance: VI : 66 (volume number) IP: 2 (issue number) DP: 2005 Aug (date) PG: 419-23 (pages) JT: Urology (journal title) etc. At Kansas State Univ., we've used DSpace only for ETDs, and have custom screens that do well for this purpose. We want to start expanding the "institutional repository" role of DSpace, however, and want to provide screens that will accomodate other types of materials and prompt the submitter for each element of the citation. If a call for papers specifically for the DSpace User Group segment of the Open Repositories 2007 meeting has been posted, can someone repost it? And if not, does anyone know when a call will be posted? Thanks. This should be an excellent conference with many of the key figures in European repository development speaking or attending. It offers a great opportunity for networking and for exchanging ideas, comparing work and keeping up to speed with the latest developments from across Europe. Details of registration are available at: http://www.lib.gla.ac.uk/openscholarship/registration.html Please note: The Conference Hotels are now fully booked but if you provide your accommodation dates the Conference Office will organise accommodation on an individual basis. Conference Update Opportunities are still available to promote your work in open access and scholarly communication in the poster session of OPEN SCHOLARSHIP 2006: NEW CHALLENGES FOR OPEN ACCESS REPOSITORIES Key themes for posters include: * Repository Developments * Added Value Services * Quality Assessment * Policies and Implementation * Sustainability * Legal Issues Posters should be submitted by the end of September 2006 for consideration by the Organising Committee. Please provide your contact details, as well as the poster title and a brief abstract (250 words max). Accepted posters will be displayed as part of a posters slot in the programme and enable participants to discuss their posters and work with conference attendees. Poster proposals can be submitted online at: http://www.lib.gla.ac.uk/openscholarship/posters.html We are also delighted that a fourth tutorial on the "EPrints Application Profile" will be available in the Tutorials session on Wednesday, 18th of October. This tutorial, run by Julie Allinson (UKOLN, University of Bath) and Andy Powell (Eduserv Foundation) offers an introduction to the Eprints Application Profile, a Dublin Core metadata profile developed to facilitate the creation and sharing of a richer set of metadata for describing scholarly works (eprints) than currently offered by simple Dublin Core. The Profile makes use of the Dublin Core Abstract Model and FRBR to group together descriptions of different expressions of a work. The application profile has been developed with funding from JISC and is hoped to form the basis for the UK eprint search engine currently being developed by Intute. The tutorial will be of use to anybody with an interest in metadata, particularly the metadata used to describe scholarly works in institutional, and other, repositories. Those for whom this tutorial may be of special interest include repository managers or administrators; developers or implementers of repository software; librarians; and developers of aggregator services. Those interested in implementing the Eprints Application Profile in their own repository are particularly encouraged to attend. The updated programme for the conference is available here: http://www.lib.gla.ac.uk/openscholarship/programme.html We look forward to meeting you in Glasgow in October.
