That's a good point. It's not only a question of courtesy, but also to
ensure, that the author "knows" of this publication.
Attended a conference some weeks ago and there was an interesting
section about plagiarism and authorship more generally speaking.
One of the many examples was a case where someone proclaimed not being
the co-author of a certain publication and knowing nothing of it.

  Besides some research groups like to have every one, including the janitor listed as an author.... 
   
  The work is seldom done by more that three ppl, and they use even the juniors that read the paper as authors.
   
  Every country has it's own set of conventions about listing. That's a mix between cultural ways and international law. 
   
  We could go around and explain country by country how it is done.
   
  But the smarter way would be to create an International Standard, just like the fantastic Metric System.
   
  Can we all work on that?
