That's a good point. It's not only a question of courtesy, but also to
ensure, that the author "knows" of this publication.
Attended a conference some weeks ago and there was an interesting section
about plagiarism and authorship more generally speaking.
One of the many examples was a case where someone proclaimed not being the
co-author of a certain publication and knowing nothing of it.
