The deadline for proposals is August 30, 2005.) The Networked Resources and Metadata Interest Group (NRMIG) of the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS) is seeking speakers for a program scheduled for the 2006 American Library Association Annual Conference in New Orleans. The program is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, June 25, 2006 from 1:30 to 5:30 pm. The title of the program is "Rights Metadata in Institutional Repositories." Description of the program: As universities and other academic institutions implement institutional repositories, they must remain sensitive to the needs of their constituencies, especially the faculty and students that are constantly creating new knowledge. Scholarly communication is moving online at an increasing pace, and the technology that enables digital publishing has accelerated faster than our ability to meet the legal requirements of copyright. Rights management systems provide potential solutions to the complexities of copyright and access management. This program will provide a forum for discussing trends in rights management for institutional repositories. We are seeking speakers for three one-hour presentations. We will consider single or multiple speakers for each presentation. Descriptions of the presentations: 1) "Opening doors to learning: standards for rights management." This presentation will cover the use of metadata standards for access management. Potential topics include Shibboleth, XrML, ODRL, and METSRights. The discussion will focus on the purpose of standards, as well as their practical application and future development 2) "Copyright stakeholders in IRs: A balancing act." This presentation will analyze the stakeholders in IRs and evaluate their motivations in the context of new forms of scholarly communication. Some of these stakeholders include faculty, students, universities, academic libraries, commercial publishers, and open access publishers. The discussion will analyze how cultural and legal issues impact the development of IR systems, programs, and services and how rights management metadata is meeting those needs. 3) "Managing access at University X: a case study." This presentation will feature a case study from the implementation of an actual IR. The topics discusses will include planning and development of the IR with an emphasis on rights management and access issues. Those interested in presenting may contact Brian Surratt (bsurratt at lib-gw.tamu.edu) or Michael Babinec (m-babinec at northwestern.edu), the NRMIG Programming Co-chairs. Please provide the title for the presentation, an abstract of no more than 300 words, and the duration of the presentation. This message is being posted to multiple email lists, please pardon any duplication. Send us your impressions of the site and ideas for new content. Be as specific as possible. * What do you like or not like about DSpace.org? * What would you like us to keep and what content should we get rid of? Example "I like the elevator pitch, but I need more details on financial planning or service policies." or "I'm a one-man-band at my university - are there service providers or consultants I can hire to help me out?" Even more helpful: "I have a user survey I'd like to share with the community. How can I add it to the site?" Less helpful, but every voice counts: "It seems a little blah to me. I can't quite say why." * Send us your ideas on how to include content from the community - are there web content management tools you've used that work well? Any volunteers to manage the content, etc. How would you make the site more dynamic? * Do you have content you want to contribute? But there is no need to restrict the use of a version control system to merely software development of course (anything that goes through a rapid change process by collaborators can be stuff into version control). What about mirroring a subversion repository into a DSpace repository (or feeding documents in a trunk or specific branch in a subversion repository into DSpace)? Maybe it would be as simple as writing a script to do so. There is a neat little open source project called svk that build on subversion and performs mirroring of repositories that could perhaps be used. Message-ID: <19ADCC0B9D4CAD4582BB9900BBCE357401AA070B@tayexc13.americas.cpqcorp.net> Hello Sergio, I'm not quite sure I understand what the need is you're getting at. If you mean using DSpace to archive snapshots of a versioning repository like CVS or Subversion, then that's an interesting use case -- it's vaguely similar to other use cases such as CWSpace, where snapshots of content from a course management system are archived in DSpace. DSpace was originally intended as an archival/reference information system, as opposed to an active collaboration tool, hence thus far we've skirted the issue of fine-grained versioning. The idea of using something like CVS or subversion as the underlying storage for DSpace has been floated but not explored, because it is not really in line with what most people want out of DSpace. However this is open source -- you're free to try out anything! Just understand that if something you do is not in line with the overall direction of DSpace, it may not be included in the main system. We're trying to come up with some general guidelines for students on how to handle mathematical operators and symbols in the abstracts of their ETDs. As students submit their ETDs, they generally copy the abstract from a PDF or Word version of their ETD, then paste it into the abstract input box in DSpace (ver. 1.2.2). Some characters paste ok, others just produce a blank space, some produce a small square box. Here's a sample: ∭, ??, ⊛, ??, Ϭ The Unicode for these characters: 222D, 222C, 229B, 03A8, 03EC The guideline we've been leaning toward is this: 1. Copy and paste your abstract. 2. Check it carefully. If any characters did not paste properly, edit the text of your abstract. You may need to spell out the operator as text rather than using the symbol. This approach is not proving popular with math, physics, statistics, and other subject areas. For those cases where students feel they must use a symbol, is there a way to enter Unicode character code in the abstract input box and have the symbol rendered in the DSpace item record display? Has anyone had any experience with this and found a solution? Hello Mary, This is very similar to dealing with HTML documents that consist of multiple files (images, links etc). In such items, one bitstream is tagged as the 'primary' bitstream. This becomes the only file linked from the item display page, and DSpace can then effectively put all the files in the item in one 'directory' so that it is rendered correctly in end user's browsers. I suspect the same solution will work for you. There are two ways you can go about this: The first way doesn't actually need any modifications to DSpace. Along with the Flash files, you could upload an HTML file which includes links to each Flash file, and tag this as the 'primary' bitstream. The links between the Flash files should then work. Or, if one Flash file is always the 'starting point' and you don't need end users to be able to go directly to one of the others, you can 'embed' the Flash object in that HTML file. The second way involves a tiny piece of code changing, but would mean you don't need to create that HTML file each time. It also only makes sense if one Flash file is always the starting point, and you don't want the other Flash files to be listed on the item display page. In this case, you can tag the first Flash file as the primary bitstream. But you'll also need to make a (very minor) modification to the DSpace code to tell it to go into 'HTML mode' if the primary bitstream is Flash. (Currently it only happens if the primary bitstream is HTML.) I don't know what's held that up, but no one at MIT has the presentations or access to the site. Is anyone from Cambridge aware of plans to post the presentations?
