Clifford Lynch, 2004 http://www.rlg.org/en/page.php? Page_ID=19481#article0 These long-term commitments are a key aspect of institutional repositories, and each repository should seek to facilitate the long-term preservation of selected digital objects stored within it. This forum seeks to address these preservation features and present the audience with working examples of such preservation activities. Expert speakers will demonstrate practical examples of preservation strategies within their repositories. The first half of the day will focus on different implementations of institutional repositories, and the organisational challenges that institutions might face in building preservation strategies into their systems. The afternoon will highlight two case studies of up and running digital archives reflecting on the technical challenges they encountered. The day will conclude with a panel session, which will explore the different technical and cultural approaches to digital preservation activities. The forum is aimed at organisations that are in the process of, or about to embark on setting up institutional repositories, and will serve to give the audience a clearer idea of what might suit their own requirements. Key aspects of the forum: 1. Practical examples of up and running institutional repositories 2. Organisational challenges faced in setting up sustainable repositories 3. Detailed technical preservation processes 4. Metadata decisions taken 5. Practicalities of distributed repositories 6. Resource requirements needed to build digital preservation practices into repositories Speakers: - Sheila Anderson, AHDS - Jim Downing, Cambridge University Library - Hamish James, AHDS - John Maccoll, Edinburgh University Library - William Nixon, Glasgow University Library - Stephen Pinfield, Nottingham University Library - David Ryan, The National Archives - Andrew Speakman, AHDS The registration fee is ?40 for CURL/DPC members, and ?80 for non-CURL/DPC members. Google only indexed static pages on the web. In order for Google to find the items, you may either need to provide a static page to all the items.. e.g. providing (submit to Google) a webpage containing hard coded URLs for all single items pages.. I don't think Google is that intelligent to find the item pages via the DSpace front-end.. (requires automatic search of all possible items and indexes!). Rose Nelson Rose Nelson Technology Consultant Colorado State Library Colorado Department of Education 303-866-6946 303-748-4720 ________________________________ Hello, my name is Rose Nelson and I am the Chair-Elect for the LITA Emerging Technologies Interest Group. I am responsible for developing a program for the annual ALA conference in 2005. After going to the Top Tech Trends session at ALA 2004 and thinking about technologies on the horizon, I thought it would be interesting to plan a program on digital respositories. I'm hoping that some of you can either put me in contact with potential presenters, or that you would be willing to present at the program. The program that I am proposing will look at a couple of different digital repositories and draw some comparisons and differences among them. The topics that I was planning to cover include definition of a digital repository, type of software that is used, digital objects that might be found in a repository, issues surrounding access and retrieval, and policies. This might be too much to cover in one session, but I figure I can narrow it down once I talk to the experts on this topic. I'm also not glued to any particular topic listed above, but wanted to gather some ideas to get started. I would like for the program to be of interest to academic and public libraries so I am also planning to get a speaker to talk about WebJunction a new online community for libraries--primarily public libraries are using the national WebJunction Community-- where they have access to resources that have been created for and by library staff throughout the country. (http://www.webjunction.org ). WebJunction is also a repository of online learning and message board forums. It's quite different in content than traditional repositories, but I think some of the same concepts may apply --creating policies, digital rights management, standards, etc. I am wondering if you, or someone on your team will be attending ALA 2005 and would be intersted in being on a panel of speakers that discusses digital repositories. If this is something that you or your staff cannot engage in, is there someone you would recommend I contact that could possibly be a presenter on this topic? I would like to start pulling together a list of speakers. Thanks for your consideration. Could some one tell me where I can get the the earlier version of the DSpace. Thanks, Yiqun From levan at oclc.org Fri Sep 17 13:40:57 2004 From: levan at oclc.org (LeVan,Ralph) Date: Fri, 17 Sep 2004 13:40:57 -0400 Subject: [Dspace-general] DSPACE Web User Interface Customization Message-ID: I'm sure there is an official fix for this somewhere, but I'll give you my unofficial interpretation. The problem is that Tomcat has the servlet jar in one of its own libraries. So, it doesn't need to be in your classpath to run DSpace. But, it does need to be in your classpath to compile DSpace. So, add /common/lib/servlet.jar to your classpath and the problem should go away. Hope this helps! Would it maybe be a good idea for those actual and potential dspace users who are interested in this to talk about a desiderata list or perhaps react to (high-level) functional requirements already under development for long-term digital archiving? The DSpaceProjects page and DSpaceTwo pages both have a lot of information about various development projects underway (or in the planning stages). Rob Tansley's page (in the DSpaceWikiUsers section) also has a list of non-DSpace preservation-related projects. Also, if preservation is your particular area of interest, you might want to sign up for the dspace-preservation listserv (if you haven't done so already) at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/dspace-preservation. We would be intersted in talking to other sites as to which of several multiple forms of input you are supporting, i.e. degrees, minutes, seconds (DMS) or decimal measure. Are you offering your contributors a choice of options as to how they may input the coordinates?
