tl;dr: Care about dorm life? Run for a position on DormCon! Election meeting is 5/2.

Hello friends!

DormCon is the governing and advocacy body for all dormitory residents, and if you hold an interest in dorm life or the relationship between dorms and the MIT administration, this is the perfect way to get involved. We on DormCon exec spend our time meeting with administrators, representing students' concerns and desires, and developing policies that improve student life at the institute. This is a wonderful opportunity to have an impact on both the lives of those around you and the future of MIT student life, with a great group of people at your side!

DormCon Elections are coming up May 2nd in W20-407 at 7:30pm!

No prior student government experience required - just enthusiasm, and a desire to improve your community and make awesome things happen! All class years are welcome!

We will be electing the following positions:
President
Vice President
Secretary
Treasurer
Housing Chair(s)
Dining Chair(s)
REX/CPW Chair
Risk Management Chair(s)
Judicial Committee Chair(s)

Additionally, note that each of these positions are part of DormCon exec. This means that, in addition to your particular area of focus, you will get to be a part of many conversations and decisions surrounding all aspects of dormitory life at MIT.

The election is being held at the next DormCon meeting, at 7:30 PM on Thursday, May 2nd, in W20-407. If you would like to have your platform emailed out before the meeting, you must email it to dormcon-execer at mit.edu<mailto:dormcon-execer at mit.edu> no later than 5 pm Tuesday, April 30. If you cannot make the election meeting, you may send someone as proxy.

DormCon meets every other Thursday 7:30pm-9:00pm. We will have our next general body meeting today (4/18) in Maseeh at 7:30pm and in four weeks on Thursday (5/17) in Burton Conner at 7:30pm.(post elections) Consider coming to check out all the improvements we're working on and hear about the current state of residential life. Descriptions of each position's duties are at the bottom of this email. All dormitory residents are eligible to run for all positions, with the exception of current officers of the UA, IFC, Panhel, and LGC. No prior experience is required. Position descriptions:

Note: all positions are held for a term of 1 year, starting and ending on June 1st.
Also, all positions are a part of DormCon exec, and thus have an impact on all DormCon issues, regardless of whether they are part of their position's description.

President
The DormCon President is responsible for carrying out the DormCon Constitution and overseeing all decisions of DormCon. The president is also responsible for presiding over all DormCon meetings. Lastly, the president is DormCon's chief representative to all external bodies, MIT or otherwise.

Vice President
The DormCon Vice President is officially charged with assisting and supplementing the DormCon president, and de facto has many of the same powers and requirements as the president. In addition, the Vice President directs many of the large projects of DormCon.

Treasurer
The DormCon Treasurer keeps track of all things monetary. They are responsible for creating a budget for the semester and updating it throughout the term.

Secretary
The DormCon Secretary maintains all the official records of DormCon. This includes taking minutes at meetings. This also involves publicizing DormCon events, including sending out reminder emails about meetings. They are also in charge of DormCon's online presence, include its website, its shiny new wiki, and its Twitter account.

Housing Chair(s)
The Dormcon Housing Chair position is responsible for all things housing! In recent years, the chairs have been in charge of issues such as drafting new mural policies, designing welcome week to introduce incoming freshmen to MIT's dorm system, and working on dorm storage.

Dining Chair(s)
The DormCon Dining Chairs are DormCon’s main advocate on food and dining related issues. They are responsible for representing both dining- and cook-for-yourself dorms in discussions related to both house and retail dining. Recently, the dining chairs have worked to select a new dining vendor, develop new meal plans, and to help establish a low-cost grocery store on campus.

Risk Management Chair(s)
The DormCon Risk Managers oversee all aspects of safety in dorms and in dorm life, especially on matters of policy surrounding alcohol, drugs, party-registration, party-safe training, bystander intervention, and the institute's Good Samaritan policies. This position allows you to influence the Institute's approach to risk management, and to make it easier for students to do fun things, while also being safe and responsible.

The DormCon Judcomm chairs interpret the Constitution and run elections. They also chair DormCon's judicial committee.

REX/CPW Chair
The DormCon CPW/REX chairs oversee of all the dormitories' events during two of the best times of the year. They work closely with Admissions in creating the CPW booklet and communicate with dorm CPW chairs to ensure a great CPW. They are also responsible for coordinating REX (Residential Exploration) and publishing the REX booklet by coordinating with all of the dorms. This is a great opportunity to have a say in the way that MIT welcomes its freshmen and to help create the excitement that brought us all here!
