Sorry for the late notice but I'll be unable to come to tonights
meeting.  I was intending to but my wife caught a bug this weekend and
I'm going to stay home with her.  Here's my input though - email and
IRC meetings work for me.  I am moving to North Carolina in a few
months so meeting in person won't be an option for me for too much
longer.

My interest in food stems from the fact that I fancy myself a good
cook.  My focus is healthy, whole food and of course many products
make impressive claims about how great they are for you - I'd be
interested to see if they really are.  There's a lot of mixed data out
there largely due to food scientists constantly changing the rules
about what is 'good' for us (eggs have been good, bad, and inbetween
throughout my life) so I would like to see TAM helping to clarify
that.  I also think it would be nice to know what actions back the
claims a company makes (how 'green' are they really, do they slash and
burn forests, mistreat their workers, treat employees really well...).
 I know the beauty of TAM is that all of this information would
*ideally* be available for lots of foods and users could then create
profiles to just filter out the information they are interested in
personally.

>From a technological standpoint the mailer is the piece that I know
needs to be worked on and I have some experience with it.  The two
approaches that I've investigated are using gmail through the google
api or sending mail directly from the server using smtplib.  I haven't
looked at receiving or processing incoming mail directly but I don't
expect that is too difficult either.  Please send me the meeting

I've updated the

part of the wiki to reflect some recent changes I made to the
environment setup. Essentially, if one uses sqlite3, then a default
local settings.py file is used (via CURRENT.default) if no CURRENT
file is created. Notice that your personal CURRENT file should not be
checked in. I accidentally check it in and then removed it from svn...
which deleted my local version-- i was expecting to get a ? when I svn
stat'd. Thus, your CURRENT file may be deleted next time you svn up.
eit. Just recreate a CURRENT file that points to your local settings
directory.

I'm moving on to updating other documentation on the wiki. Hopefully a
high level timeline and low level todo list (tract tickets) will be
posted shortly.  the ticket system is meant to be collaborative, so i
expect to just get the ball rolling.

Hi folks.  The MIT Public Service Fund is gnerously sponsoring us to hire
one or two work study students as workshop coordinators and researchers.
This is part of our campaign to generate usable data on ThoughtAndMemory.org's
system.

If you have friends with an interest in sustainability, activism, research,
or just a really people oriented person that might have some work study
eligibility then please let them/me know, ok?  The pay will be $13 and hour.

We want to find some really passionate people to bring our service to the
next level.

Also, if I'm sending you this email it's because you've already expressed
interest in being a project ally.  So I'm going to add you to our google
goups email list so that you can get our announcements about upcoming events

I'm really proud of all of our achievements and I think that this is a great

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again this Sunday at our next
ThoughtAndMemory work session.

5-7 with dinner afterwards. Let me know if you prefer a different time.

This one will be especially exciting as we'll be reviewing the task list.

In the next few days I'll send out the expected milestones. We have
milestones every 3 month. Each milestone is broken down by component,
eg, engine, UI, data collection. Each component has highlevel tasks
that, coordinated between components, fulfill the milestone's goal.

*** Please review what I send out and ADD any task I've left off,
especially if it is something you're interested in working on. ***

The task list is high level, so I don't expect surprises. Feel free to
add tasks if necessary (email me back).

Think about the actual steps you're going through to get things done.
We'll add them to the task manager on Sunday, and each of you will be
responsible for keeping the task manager up to date with
accomplishments and discovered tasks.

The goal is for the whole ThoughtAndMemory team to make WEEKLY
progress as we count down towards the milestones, and it will also
make mentoring more effective. In my own work I tend to dive into
tasks and not look up until I get things working. Knowing this I am
conscientious of getting external feedback about what I'm doing, since
an outside perspective is super helpful at keeping me on track and
moving. I'd like to make sure that kind of feedback, between any two
people, is possible within ThoughtAndMemory.

We'll be using XPlanner (xplanner.org) for task management, which provides:
  1. task organization into milestones (= iterations in xplanner) and
components (= stories within an iteration), plus task assignment (so
two people working on the same story don't overlap).
 2. a nice GUI, which will make it accessible to everyone working on
ThoughtAndMemory
 3. summarization of progress, which will help us stay on target and
help funders see that we're meeting our goals!!

Let me know if you have any questions, concerns or feedback. Also, if
you're still having trouble setting up the environment let me know and
we can meet sooner, either right before the Sunday meeting or some
other day.

Hey, guys.

We have several new folks on our team now.  Really good energy, lots of
drive.  I'm excited for everyone to meet each other.

In order to expand gracefully, we've come up with a more inclusive work
flow.  We should go over details in person.  But here are some of the
features:

There are now links to any of our working websites (email archives, wikis,
etc) on a bookmark page.  You can get there by clicking on "Team Pages" in
the sidebar of our blog.  It's also at
http://www.ThoughtAndMemory.org/bookmarks.html

system.  Why have we invested so much time in setting this up?

Keeping track of our aspirations and accomplishments helps us:

   - Understand the context of our own and each other's work.
   - Eliminate redundant or counterproductive tasks.
   - Plan our strategic milestones and next steps.
   - Demonstrate what we've been able to accomplish to funders, press,
   and other supporters.

Your user name for the project management system is at the end of this
email.  Your password is currently odinr0x! (the "0" is a number, not a
letter.)

We've also identified a set of Iteration Milestones.  We're naming our 3
month iterations alphabetically after birds.  We're working on "Crow", our
first system redesign, until June 1st.  That's right, we've already finished
"Auklet" (design) and "Bluejay" (first release).

Lucy has spent a heck of a lot of effort getting this to work.  Shaunalynn
has set an example for how to create a "sticky" overview on one of our
google groups pages.  And I've started to fill in the details.

I'm so very excited that our team is coming together and I look forward to
learning more from each of you as we continue to grow.

plus Clay and I filled in a ton of project stories from the
spreadsheet.

If you haven't already, please check it out. Sign up for stories (set
of tasks) or tasks that you're working on, and modify/add as
necessary. You should have editor permissions. Pepe, that means you!
(you asked for some pestering :)

Click on the [help] link in the top left corner for a quick
guide/how-to. If you want more background on the system google for
"xplanner", as that is the project manager system we're using. It is a
tool for eXtreme/agile programming, which we're applying to all of our
thoughtandmemory work, not just programming.

Yeah, hey, the taco place in Union Square that is the best Boston has
ever had is expanding into the bar next door.  Sunday is their soft
opening.

So I was thinking of getting in my van and bringing folks from the
coop over at 7:15.  Does someone else have a car to add to the fun?
Or if you don't like the ghetto van then we could rent a zipcar for an
hour or two.

BTW, I've had to reboot tomcat a few times this past week. If you've
been logged in and then suddenly lost access and had to log out and
log back in--- eit, my bad. Let me know if this caused problems (out
of curiousity).
I'm trying to set things up to prevent this from happening. There's
been a memory leak that I only just found a solution for (sruts:
IntropectorCleanupListner). Hopefully there won't be any more
rebooting.

Anyone want to attend a fun sustainable living expo this weekend and help me
pass out ThoughtAndMemory.org cards?  You'll get to wear a big sandwich
board style sign that Nicole is working on!  (no kidding, the table fee was
too high so we're dressing up instead.)

Ideally we could take 2 hour shifts and get to hang out on the side.  So let
me know when you'd like to come!

   - Sunday March 30: 11am?5pm

Tickets cost $8 bucks for zipcar members.  Maybe a bit more for others.  Let

For the last couple days Nicole, Shaunalynn, Lucy, and I have been hard at
work creating two larger than life raven puppets and promotional material
communicate their message.  Yesterday these two characters (the ravens
"Thought" and "Memory" from viking legend and now our own mythology) went to
a Boston based sustainability conference and put on a bit of a show.
