Nonetheless, BILUMI/TAM passed a huge milestone yesterday. Lest it go unnoticed, I would like to point out why we should all be proud. Our accomplishments this past iteration--the last 3 months in our 12 month history--have been tremendous. To name a few: * Establish a project management system and improve team communication * Collaborate with the Center for New Civic Media * Initiate community page designs * Design and begin implementing second comic book * Build SMS system demo * Redesign web application * Publish new diagrams of how system works * Quadruple youtube fan club commercials * Make raven puppets to crash an ecological sustainability fair * Outreach at MIT Museum's science and earth week, MIT's entrepreneur's club, Harvard's Berwick conference * Change our name, logo and identity * Expand our blog into an interesting journal of events * Improve team communication and effectiveness * Apply for 2 grants and send 4 letters of inquiry * Get written up in 4 blogs and media sources (and counting)--list will be available online soon. * Have our own chocolate bar wrapper * Have incredibly successful launch party All of these accomplishments have real impacts on the future of BILUMI/TAM. The launch party, a culmination of our efforts this iteration, is especially meaningful for the organization as a whole. As from a Bar Mitzvah, the organization has launched into the public consciousness, not as the "neat concept" it started as, but as a real organization with the process, technology and committment to mature into an organization's equivalent of adulthood. (If you haven't yet appreciated and celebrated our accomplishments please take the time to do so right now.) Great! We are now in the Duck iteration, effective today through August 31st. What gets done this iteration depends on the interests and commitment of each of us. This could include: * Fix bugs and add features to web application and cellphone system * Import and research tons of data * Acquire more funding, users, contributors and volunteers * Present in more conferences and appear in more media * Initiate collaboration with local teachers for fall semester * Publish second comic book We'll have an organizational-wide meeting soon with breakout sessions for going over duck goals, stories and commitments. That might also be a good time for process and accomplishment feedback. Good work, Lucy. On that note, it's time for us to meet up and review where we're headed this summer (this iteration is called "Duck"). Lucy and I are going on a 10 day trip at the end of next week. So can we meet beforehand? Please click here to confirm your availability: http://www.doodle.ch/rsu3xty465hzspy2 Because we all put so much effort into planning our launch party and press releases I prefer that ramp up slowly to getting serious work done this summer. So let's combine our executive board meeting with our first planning meeting. A half hour for executive board business and goal setting followed by an hour (or less) of planning in separate groups (outreach and dev) should get us rolling. To help make the process speedy Lucy and I will bring a proposal for goals and ways to accomplish those goals. We'll also send a complete agenda before the meeting so that you can think about changes to suggest. Here's the structure we've come up with so far: exec agenda (unordered): * go over duck goals * fyi: review current budget * new members breakout * add all stories to list (go over scope, criteria) * prioritize stories * people accept stories Great, I look forward to seeing ya'll again soon! -clay On Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 12:35 AM, Lucy Mendel wrote: > yo, > > I don't usually write formal messages to the whole team. Attached is the budget that we'll all be reviewing. I'll bring some print outs too. Here are the goals that I'll propose for the summer iteration: Outreach - Begin to make a real impact with our working online community: Work with teachers to modify and adopt our lesson plans in local classrooms. Contact every relevant informations provider and similar service to suggest alliances. Create an expanded research guide. Create a potential revenue report based on market research. Finish Chocolate industry research. Publish an interactive workshop guide/page. Design and begin implementing community information pages. Contact a dozen grants and secure funding from at least one source. Host a major local fundraising event. Development Goals: * get the web application technology in a developer friendly state so that the rest of our feature set can be added and bugs eliminated. The application should contain the full feature set, work on all platforms and we should be confident about our ability to identify and fix bugs. * turn cellphone demo into maintainable, extensible system and add features. Same principle as for web application. There are really two parts here: the cellphone application and the data gathering backend. The latter should be better integrated into the main app. -clay On Thu, Jun 5, 2008 at 11:25 AM, Clay Ward wrote: > Nicely said, Lucy! When I saw the error in my version of impct.html it gave a main,py error, i believe. not necessary more helpful, since it was the template at fault. btw, dan: pane makes sense for using, but it'd be good to know how the added template tags work ot make it easier to figure them out since we lack documentation (and anyway, maybe we'll want to modify them or add more). the case tag also makes sense, but i wonder if that has a bug in it wrt an extra %} or something. What do you think? Is it worth putting together a blog poll to see what people think? Can we allow people to "adopt" companies? That is to say, allow them to donate to us and we'll make sure to contact the company of their choice? Perhaps there are different levels that pay for different services that we can provide to companies to help them be greener? "Whether you approve of or disprove of a company's practices, adopting them is a great way to bring public attention to them. It even helps a company to pay attention to our community's desires for their improvement." Adoption levels: $20 - The company's name and any logo that the donor submits will cycle through our front page requesting review by users. This is a way for our users to suggest what should be reviewed next. $40 - As above plus we'll send the donor an "I adopted X company" sticker if available. $100 - As above plus we'll send the company a sticker, a link to their revue pages on BILUMI and a personal note from the donor. We'll also send the donor a copy of the note and any reply that you receive. $500 - This will allow us to commission the design and printing of an "I adopted X company" sticker for that company. The donor will have the ability to approve of the design that they commission and receive a pack of 10 stickers to give to friends. $1000 - Once all contributions to adopt a company add up to $1000 we'll prepare 4 quarterly reports for the company and provide them with a forum to place their own reactions to these quarterly reports. You can help a company celebrate its efforts to respond to the will of our community! -clay -- Clay Ward President and Founder Buy It Like You Mean It http://www.BuyItLikeYouMeanIt.org "Change the world... one purchase at a time." Message-ID: Hi everyone. ThoughtAndMemory.org is now Buy It Like You Mean It. And there is so much good news... OUR LAUNCH PARTY WAS FUN After a concerted effort to fix bugs, improve our homepage and blog, and change our organization's name (to "Buy It Like You Mean It") we had a really fun launch party last week! Taza chocolate hosted us at their Somerville factory and so many people helped make the night special. Redbones and Sam Adams donated food and drinks and Taza wrapped a special batch of chocolate bars for us to sell. Not only did we celebrate our hard working volunteers but we raised over $500! NOW WE'RE IN THE NEWS We used the launch party as an excuse to tell local newspapers and blogs about our service. I admit that I didn't expect to get much coverage right away; but we spent a lot of effort crafting clear and exciting news releases just to prime the pump for later announcements. To my surprise I've been giving interviews ever since! There will be an article about us in this Sunday's Boston Globe in the City Weekly section. There may also be something in the Cambridge Chronicle soon. And you can go to http://www.goodcleantech.com/2008/06/buy_it_like_you_mean_it_1.php to read what they're saying about us on the Good Clean Tech blog (go ahead and add your own comments!) I'm working on a press page so that you can find the other blogs that have also featured us in one way or another. DONORS RECEIVE FREE CHOCOLATE While supplies last we'll be giving away commemorative Buy It Like You Mean It launch party chocolate bars to anyone who donates at least $10 to our cause. Donations are tax deductible and really help us meet our goals. SHERRI ANNOUNCES A REVIEW CONTEST Sherri Davidoff has now joined Lucy Mendel and I as a Buy It Like You Mean It team blogger! Hi everyone. The request was that I would work at a set time and place every week and will welcome collaborators and meeting participants at that time. I've agreed and so has Lucy (as the central organizer of our development team). We are thinking of meeting at MIT's New Media Center (and a nearby but as yet undetermined classroom) on either Sunday or Monday nights from 6-8pm. Maybe we'd stay later sometimes and order take out food too. But at minimum we'd be there every week. Can you help us choose between Sunday or Monday night? I've got a good chunk of cellphone changes in my sandbox to commit. We hope to tie off and set aside work on this demo soon. 2. There's a large code cleanup story for our current web application, the goals being to: * remove unused code * complete unfinished framework pieces * port features dropped between version changes 3. The next big story is automatic accumulation of data, both from external databases with API's (eg, the UPCs and eventually manufacturer information we get from http://upcdatabase.com), scraping the web (eg, we considered scraping wikipedia, though it doesn't seem to have the right content), and user submissions. Note that we still expect users to rate the reviews, as well as edit and contribute to other properties. The actual stories and tasks have yet to make their way to xplanner. I expect to email that out in the next week or two. Let me know where your interests lie. Clay and I will be working every Monday night in MIT's new media center, so that would be a good time to catch up in person if need be. l. Message-ID: Hi folks. This afternoon I was informed that we are going to have 3 student staff workers for 6 weeks this summer! I'm going to be meeting with them each weekday morning and we're going to try to get as much done as possible. I requested three kinds of students: A web computer hacker, a comic book artist, and an activist. It sounds like their skills aren't quite so focused. But I have faith that we'll be able to get a lot done together. So in addition to Monday night 6-8pm summer work meetings at the New Media Center with Lucy and any of you, I'm also going to have 9am-noon hours every weekday in the Student Art Association office (W20-429.) I want to expose these students to as much of our process as possible. So let me know if you want to be involved with helping me plan tasks for or working alongside them. I'm really looking forward to the chance to see how a younger crew takes control of aspects of our project. I already have a volunteer (a counselor from the program) to work with them on Tuesdays. But every other day is still open if you want to join the fun. -clay -- Clay Ward President and Founder Buy It Like You Mean It http://www.BuyItLikeYouMeanIt.org "Change the world... one purchase at a time."
