Yes, I've named the world's smallest lending library after a noodle dish with a silly name that my mom used to make. I look forward to the library's use. So please let me know if you'd like to reserve a book or request another. I'm using the Delicious Monster Library to keep track of the books. But you don't need to download their service to use the library. Just stop by my place some time and check out a book! I've attached a picture of what's in our library currently. Did you know that Delicious Monster has offered to donate their bar code visualization software to us at no charge when we're ready to use it to let people scan barcodes on products? It's true! But for the moment we're still focusing on chocolate research... My very next email will talk about that! It's not a relational database, but rather a collection of documents where you can specify the attributes as you go. It actually seems like a very good candidate for decentralizing our database. From an IRC session at #couchdb, where I asked about the issue of permissions: > I have a question about authentication... is there any way to restrict who +can do what in couchdb? *** Signoff: dreid () > authorization, rather not in couchdb itself. you'd need requests through a proxy of some +sort > Is it possible to make a replication read-only? *** pfein (n=pfein at user-160uenf.cable.mindspring.com) has joined channel +#couchdb with an apache and mod_rewrite in front, it should be doable > I'm interested in using couchdb to replicate on servers not under my control +... is there any sane way to recover from a "bad" replication? *** bobesponja (n=bobespon at bas75-1-82-235-231-146.fbx.proxad.net) has joined +channel #couchdb dphiffer: You definitely don't want CouchDB running open to servers +not under your control > Hehe at this point > I'm running a project called ShiftSpace (shiftspace.org), which we're +looking to decentralize DB-wise. Couch seems like a very good fit except for +that one issue. but using apache or a simple script that routes your replication +roots to the untrusted peers is probably easy how would that work? Would your users run their own CouchDB +instances? *** phuson_ (n=phuson at nat/yahoo/x-d887da8f876a1099) has joined channel +#couchdb and what would be replicated? > I think the content itself ought to be replicated. We'd only need "several" +replications -- only a small percentage of advanced users would be expected +to have the server resources + know-how. Ah, reading your 'install' site. Each user would have its own +database that you'd want to replicate to a central server at certain points? > The install instructions are more for setting up a development environment, +which uses a local database. In general the database lives out in the data +cloud. We just don't want it to stirctly be *our* cloud. BTW: I totally dig shiftspace. It's cool :) > Thanks :) > Partially we're looking to decentralize for practical reasons (just got our +first bandwidth overage) and partially for social reasons (don't want speech +to be repressed) dphiffer: CouchDB is a perfect fit. (I'd say :) So ...thinking... Your peers are not really untrusted, but +semi-trusted and while bad things could happen and you need undo then, it +wouldn't be common, right? > Yeah, I'm thinking the permissions thing isn't that important ... > As long as we trust a small number of peers. > And yes, it does seem like a very good fit :) > Thanks for the info jan____, I'm definitely going to give this a try. It sounds like Wednesday's meeting and mixer went quite well! Thanks for all of the feedback. Our best course of action is probably to go ahead and use our prototype for the workshop and have a spreadsheet ready as a backup. I've attached a sample agenda for the workshop. Let me know if you have suggestions! Message-ID: Yesterday was our first real contributer workshop. Details at: http://www.thoughtandmemory.org/blog/ I'm so thankful and excited that we've come to this turning point. Dan put in a 48 hour work session preparing. Fritz coached me on presentation. Chia answered questions and will be going over the data from surveys with me on Monday. Stephane came and brought his research experience from Citizens Market. Luke came and wants to run his own workshop soon. A dozen SfGS MIT students came and got a lot done too! The website worked great. We ate chocolate and talked about research strategies. We were featured on the MIT home page. Most importantly we are now collecting real data! That's right. Unless you're officially on our board of directors you can now begin adding to our database, adding and reviewing our chocolate data just by clicking "Get Started" from our homepage: http://www.ThoughtAndMemory.org. Definitely click on "feedback" as well so that we can continue improving. As we continue to rework our technology, we are now squarely within a new data collection phase of our process. There is now a page on the tworavens google groups that Chia created to organize the feedback that we've gotten from our first research workshop. http://groups.google.com/group/TwoRavens/web/user-feedback 2. Chia has asked everyone to comment on it before Friday. Feel free to add your thoughts. 3. Chia will then work through everyone's comments and organize them into two documents: 4. The first document will be an addition of several tasks to the trac page. Hopefully that will be kept up to date as Dan and Mike and Lucy take care of the tasks that need to be done to finish up our prototype so that we can depend on it working correctly as we go forward. 5. The second document will outline a couple of vision proposals. These will modify the user interaction in response to the feedback we've received. Chia will post visual descriptions of the options that she sees to our google groups page so that our supporters can comment. 6. Chia is learning CSS and SVG to prepare for this redesign. Depending on the scale of changes the Trac list will be more or less involved. We will also want to modify and implement the flash intro cartoons that Raj and I have made. woohoo! -clay -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
