Dr. Wong is a board certified family physician and is also a licensed
acupuncturist. He has been practicing conventional western medicine as well as
traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in the Boston area for more than 25 years.
Dr. Wong is only few of the physicians who do TCM and conventional western
medicine in Boston area. Dr. Wong’s uses his Eastern- Western treatment
approach and have helped more than ten thousand patients in the past 25 years.
His patients are from many areas of this country and some over seas.

He wrote a book back in 1990's Tital (美国家庭药物手册) in Chinese for
overconter medicine. He wrote his second book in 2008 on tital

由美国金融风暴引发的全球经济危机对东亚经济的影响日渐深刻，其速度和规模远远超出了人们的想像，东亚经济甚至显示出比震源地美国更大的振荡。日本最近几个月GDP的跌幅远甚美国，出口急剧缩水在中国也导致大批企业倒产、大量农民工失业。过去认为东亚在危机中能够独善其身的乐观情绪、隔岸观火的心态、准备英雄救美的气概、火中取栗的抄底企图早已荡然无存。

*Topic: *Chinese Provincial Party Secretary 1977-2007: A New Framework Based
on the Theory of Situational Contingency Leadership

This research examined the leadership dynamics of the provincial party
secretaries (PPSs) in China?s Reform era. It proposes that that the
leadership of PPSs is shaped by their educational and working experience,
and categorized them into three typical leadership types, i.e.
political-bureaucrat, technocrat, and neo-political-bureaucrat, and mapped
their dynamics in the three decades. This research implied that the rising
of the neo-political-bureaucrats as PPSs in recent years will enhance
China?s capacity for good governance in the new century.

*Speaker:* Yizhi Xiong is an assistant professor and executive director of
the China Center of Public Leadership (CCPL) at School of Public Policy and
Management (SPPM), Tsinghua University, China. Currently, he is a visiting

Joe Kahn, Pulitzer Prize Winner and Deputy Foreign Editor of the New York
Times

Journalist Joe Kahn shares his thoughts about how the Chinese leadership is
handling the economic crisis and the impact its actions are having on China
and the outside world.


Kahn became the deputy foreign editor of the New York Times in early 2008.
Prior to that he was the Beijing bureau chief for the newspaper. He has also
reported on international economic issues in the Times? Washington Bureau,
and covered Wall Street based in New York.

Kahn joined the Times in January, 1998. Before that he spent four years as a
China correspondent for the Wall Street Journal. He also worked for the
Dallas Morning News as a city desk reporter and foreign correspondent.


Born in Boston, Mass., on August 19, 1964, Kahn graduated from Harvard
College in 1987, with a cum laude degree in American History. In 1990, he
received a master?s degree in East Asian Studies from the Harvard Graduate
School of Arts and Sciences.


Kahn was part of a team of reporters at the Dallas Morning News that was
awarded the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting in 1994 for stories
on violence against women around the world. He and his Beijing-based
colleague, Jim Yardley, won a Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting in
2006 for their coverage of China?s evolving legal system.


The recipient of numerous journalism prizes, Kahn has been awarded an
Overseas Press Club award and the Grantham prize for ?Choking on Growth,? a
series of stories on China?s environmental problems.

A recipient of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, Meng-Chieh Liu first
made
headlines in 1993 as a twenty-one-year-old student at The Curtis Institute of
Music,
when he substituted at last-minute's notice for Andr? Watts at the Academy of
Music
in Philadelphia. The concert earned high acclaim from critics and audience alike
 and was followed by a number of widely praised performances, including a
recital
at the Kennedy Center and a concert on the Philadelphia All-Star Series. Already
 an accomplished artist, Mr. Liu had made his New York orchestral debut two
years
earlier.
Following Mr. Liu's triumph in Philadelphia, an appearance with the Philadelphia
 Orchestra was immediately scheduled. However his career was abruptly halted by
a rare and debilitating illness that affected his connective tissues.
Hospitalized
and almost immobile for a year, doctors believed his chances for survival were
slim
and, should he survive, playing the piano would be "absolutely impossible." With
 arduous determination and relentless physical therapy, Mr. Liu has been
restored
to health and is once again performing on the concert stage.
His performance schedule in recent years has included appearances in New York,
Boston,
Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Dallas, Seattle, and San Diego,
as
well as concerts in Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Bulgaria, Spain, Australia, New
Zealand,
and South America. In 2006 Mr. Liu undertook a two-year project of the complete
Schubert sonatas, performing in San Francisco, Boston, Taipei, and Kaohsiung,
Taiwan.
A dedicated chamber musician as well as solo artist, he has collaborated with
musicians
in North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia, in addition to working with
artists
in other disciplines, including Mikhail Baryshnikov, who invited him to work
with
the White Oak Dance Project. Mr. Liu's concerts have been broadcast around the
world,
and a biography about him aired on Taiwanese National Television.
Born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Mr. Liu began his piano studies early and at age
thirteen
was accepted by The Curtis Institute of Music to study with Jorge Bolet, Claude
Frank, and Eleanor Sokoloff. He has received the 2002 Philadelphia Musical Fund
Society Career Advancement Award and first prizes in the Stravinsky, Asia
Pacific
Piano, and Mieczyslaw Munz competitions. In 2008 he was selected as one of the
ten
most outstanding young people in Taiwan. Mr. Liu has been a member of the Curtis
 faculty since 1993, the year of his graduation. In 2006 he joined the piano
faculty
at Roosevelt University in Chicago.

Abstract of the talk
==============

Yoga and meditation are becoming increasingly popular in the US, both as leisure past-times and as elements of therapeutic interventions.  Although a significant amount of research has demonstrated that meditation-based interventions are effective at reducing self-reported stress and clinical symptoms, few studies have rigorously addressed the scientific mechanisms of action underlying these popular programs. We use functional MRI to investigate the long-term impact of meditation on brain structure and function.  In this talk I will review data from our lab and the literature, and related the neural findings to clinical outcome findings.

Sara Lazar PhD is a scientist in the Psychiatry Department at Massachusetts General Hospital and an Instructor in Psychology at Harvard Medical School. The focus of her research is to elucidate the neural mechanisms underlying meditation, both in clinical settings and to promote and preserve health and well-being in healthy individuals.

我们中国人一向认为“沉默是金”，相信“做好事不留名”。可能正是因为如此，CSSA虽然拥有千余名成员，每年组织大量活动，从来没有得到过MIT校方的官方荣誉肯定。为什么呢？因为没有人提名。

我们真的还要继续沉默到底吗？还记得我们一起度过的那些时光吗？每两周freeride送我们去买菜，我们共同把新生接回校园，四川震后我们踊跃捐款彼此更团结更坚强；奥运的辉煌时刻我们一起欢呼，感恩圣诞新年春节的晚宴给我们带来了节日的气氛，文艺厨艺棋牌卡拉ok大赛让我们一显身手共享快乐，那些远足让海边沙滩和outlet都留下了我们的足迹，中秋的海上明月，春节的8校联欢，提供晚饭的讲座系列，等等活动，不一而足，点点滴滴，难以忘记。

附件中记录了CSSA自去年5月来组织的大小46项活动，看看是不是勾起了很多你的美好回忆呢？今后，我们的路还很长，CSSA要代表我们中国学生学者大声疾呼的事情还有很多，只有你，能够让这一切变成可能！要想让这些丰富多彩的活动可以继续下去，还需要很多校方的支持。而校方在意的，就是来自你的声音。如果你喜欢CSSA的活动，希望我们可以年年再相聚；如果你支持中国同学们团结一心，让校方更重视来自我们的呼吁，请你，提名CSSA!

A recipient of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, Meng-Chieh Liu first
made
headlines in 1993 as a twenty-one-year-old student at The Curtis Institute of
Music,
when he substituted at last-minute's notice for Andr? Watts at the Academy of
Music
in Philadelphia. The concert earned high acclaim from critics and audience alike
 and was followed by a number of widely praised performances, including a
recital
at the Kennedy Center and a concert on the Philadelphia All-Star Series. Already
 an accomplished artist, Mr. Liu had made his New York orchestral debut two
years
earlier.
Following Mr. Liu's triumph in Philadelphia, an appearance with the Philadelphia
 Orchestra was immediately scheduled. However his career was abruptly halted by
a rare and debilitating illness that affected his connective tissues.
Hospitalized
and almost immobile for a year, doctors believed his chances for survival were
slim
and, should he survive, playing the piano would be "absolutely impossible." With
 arduous determination and relentless physical therapy, Mr. Liu has been
restored
to health and is once again performing on the concert stage.
His performance schedule in recent years has included appearances in New York,
Boston,
Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Dallas, Seattle, and San Diego,
as
well as concerts in Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Bulgaria, Spain, Australia, New
Zealand,
and South America. In 2006 Mr. Liu undertook a two-year project of the complete
Schubert sonatas, performing in San Francisco, Boston, Taipei, and Kaohsiung,
Taiwan.
A dedicated chamber musician as well as solo artist, he has collaborated with
musicians
in North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia, in addition to working with
artists
in other disciplines, including Mikhail Baryshnikov, who invited him to work
with
the White Oak Dance Project. Mr. Liu's concerts have been broadcast around the
world,
and a biography about him aired on Taiwanese National Television.
Born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Mr. Liu began his piano studies early and at age
thirteen
was accepted by The Curtis Institute of Music to study with Jorge Bolet, Claude
Frank, and Eleanor Sokoloff. He has received the 2002 Philadelphia Musical Fund
Society Career Advancement Award and first prizes in the Stravinsky, Asia
Pacific
Piano, and Mieczyslaw Munz competitions. In 2008 he was selected as one of the
ten
most outstanding young people in Taiwan. Mr. Liu has been a member of the Curtis
 faculty since 1993, the year of his graduation. In 2006 he joined the piano
faculty
at Roosevelt University in Chicago.

Dear friends,

CSSA is glad to announce the opening of the CSSA library with the purpose of
enriching our lives out of classes and labs. The books and magazines we have
are all in Chinese and ready to be borrowed. Please see the attachment for the
current list of books. This list will be updated as it might become longer in
the future.  Meanwhile, books donation will be greatly appreciated. Below are
some policies regarding how this library will operate. Although these might not
be strictly regulated, we hope everyone will be considerate to his/her
colleagues and to other people who also want to borrow books.

Policy:

1. The loan duration is 3 weeks for books and 2 weeks for magazines.

2. It is free, however, the books are properties of CSSA, so please be
considerate. If at some point we find people do not treat these books well, we
may need to charge a deposit for each loan. Please don?t get us to that
point.

3. The library open hour is 6:00-6:30 on Fridays and 6:30-7:00 on Wednesdays.
Sorry for this short open hour, but we realized these books are only for
entertainment and shouldn?t involve an urgent need.

4. To borrow books or magazines, please contact:

If you need a book, please drop an email to either of these two people, and you
can get (or return) the book during the open hour.

我们中国人一向认为“沉默是金”，相信“做好事不留名”。可能正是因为如此，CSSA虽然拥有600多名成员，每年组织大量活动，却从来没有得到过MIT校方的官方荣誉肯定。为什么呢？因为没有人提名。

我们真的还要继续沉默到底吗？还记得我们一起度过的那些时光吗？每两周freeride送我们去买菜，我们共同把新生接回校园，四川震后我们踊跃捐款彼此更团结更坚强；奥运的辉煌时刻我们一起欢呼，感恩圣诞新年的晚宴给我们带来了节日的气氛，文艺厨艺棋牌卡拉ok大赛让我们一显身手共享快乐，那些远足让海边沙滩和outlet都留下了我们的足迹，中秋的海上明月，春节的8校联欢，提供晚饭的讲座系列，等等活动，不一而足，点点滴滴，难以忘记。

*30th Anniversary of Taiwan Relations Act - **Taiwan Studies Conference*
Held in Knafel Building, Room 354, 1737 Cambridge Street, Cambridge, the
event takes place from 10:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. on Friday April 3. The
conference is co-sponsored by Asia Programs at the Ash Institute for
Democratic Governance and Innovation, Harvard Kennedy School and the Taiwan
Studies Workshop of the John King Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies,
Harvard University.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act (TRA).
Enacted on April 10, 1979, the bill continued the commercial and cultural
relationship between the U.S. and Taiwan despite the severance of formal
diplomatic ties between the two sides. While the law has done much to
strengthen Taiwan?s economy and democratic practices, it remains a point of
contention between the U.S. and the People?s Republic of China, the latter
often viewing such legislation as an unnecessary intrusion of the U.S. in
domestic affairs. At the same time, the law codifies a position of
?strategic ambiguity? in which the U.S. takes no firm position whether to
intervene on behalf of Taiwan should China jeopardize the country?s
security.

Join us as we take a look back at the drafting and implementing of the TRA
and discuss the potential implications on relations among the U.S., Taiwan,
and China going forward. J. Stapleton Roy, former ambassador to the People?s
Republic of China from 1991 to 1995, will deliver the conference keynote
address at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, April 3.

Other esteemed panelists include Roger W. Sullivan, former president of the
U.S.-China Business Council; Tawei Lee, representative of the Taipei
Economic and Cultural Office in Canada; Douglas H. Paal, vice president for
Studies at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and former
director of the American Institute on Taiwan; Richard Bush, senior fellow at
the Brookings Institution; Thomas C. Christensen, professor of politics at
Princeton University; and Robert G. Sutter, visiting professor of Asian
Studies.
