Dear Friends,
A catastrophic earthquake rocked central China at 2:28pm on Monday May 12, 2008.
Within one day, the death toll rose sharply to nearly 12,000 and is keeping
rapidly rising. Most of the victims are children at school and people at work
caught under collapsed buildings, since the quake happened during working
hours. There are still numerous regular aftershocks, which make people fearful
to return home. Millions of people have to sleep in the open, in heavy rain,
with no power or water.
Facing the devastation in our motherland, the Chinese Students and Scholars
Association (CSSA) is calling for support from the whole MIT community. We will
hold a table at the student center all day long from Wednesday (May 14th)
through Friday (May 16th) to collect donation. The money collected will be used
to provide for the survivors basic shelter and food and to help rebuild their
homes. We will send the money to the China Red Cross Sichuan Branch.
To help keeping the donation procedure transparent, we will need you to provide
the following information: name, email, School/Department, Year/Graduate, phone
number. Receipts will be provided upon request. We will update the donation
information everyday on the MIT CSSA?s webpage (http://cssa.mit.edu/).
Meanwhile, the online donation account is being set up and will be available
soon. We will update you once this information is ready.
At the moment, we also need a lot of volunteers who can contribute his/her
valuable time in helping us. The duties include but are not limited to:
designing and distributing flyers, maintaining webpage, outreaching and
broadcasting. If you are interested in joining us as a volunteer, please send
your name, email and contact number to Liang, Fei (liangfei at mit.edu). She will
get in touch with you. We appreciate your great help in advance.
Please help us to distribute this message to your coworkers and friends. Any
suggestion on further showing our support toward this disaster is welcome!
Thank you for your generous support!
