Prof. Ling-Chi Wang, University of California, Berkeley Time: 6pm, May 6th, 2008 Place: 54-100 Refreshments available Dear friends, Since the recent protests and counter-protests in Olympic Torch relays at several major Western cities, there has been mounting criticism over the Chinese authority from various perspectives in the Western public. Agendas of the criticizers range from environmentalism, press freedom, Darfur to skyrocketing commodity prices and global food shortage crisis, among which China's policy in the Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR) is in the center of the stage. While we all agree that the Chinese authority could have made more achievements in many areas in China's social and political development, we do feel there might be a disconnection and misunderstanding between the East and the West in current situation. As representatives of the overseas Chinese students and staff at MIT, the MIT Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA) have always been active in introducing the Chinese culture and exchanging ideas, opinions and information between the members of our association and the MIT community. Last Wednesday we successfully hosted Dr. Arthur Holcombe from the Tibet Poverty Alleviation Fund to discuss the real opinions and concerns from average Tibetans based on his first-hand experiences and studies. We are flattered to hear many positive feedbacks from the audience, who referred to the event as a great opportunity for everyone in our community to understand more about the situation in Tibet. In order to further the discussion and mutual understanding in our community, we are glad to have Prof. Ling-Chi Wang from University of California at Berkeley to give a speech at 6pm on Tuesday May 6th. The title of Prof. Wang's talk is "US-China Relation: Olympics and Tibet?" In his presentation, Prof. Wang will examine recent events related to the use of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics and the torch relay to address a number China's domestic and international issues and policies. In particular, the discussion will focus on US-China relations and how domestic and foreign policies are shaping their dealings. Since Chinese in the U.S. have been directly affected by the changing US-China relations, Prof. Wang will also discuss the emerging role of Chinese in the US. Prof. Ling-Chi Wang became involved in both the anti-Vietnam war and civil rights movements on campus and in San Francisco area as a graduate student in Berkeley in 1966. In 1969, instead of his original plan to teach ancient Semitic languages, he participated in the creation and development of a new interdisciplinary studies on the Berkeley campus called Ethnic Studies that entails the study of the history, culture and community of the racial minorities in the US, including American Indians, black, Latino, and Asian Americans. Through teaching and research in this new field, he came to specialize in the history of Chinese and Asian minorities in the US. Since the end of the Cold War, he extended his research interests to Overseas Chinese studies and US-China relations. In 1992, along with scholars from throughout the world, he founded the International Society for the Study of Chinese Overseas (ISSCO), which is now a leading international scholarly organization for the advancement of Overseas Chinese studies. You have pledged over $800 so far! These funds will go directly to support children affected by the disease in rural Anhui and Henan provinces. Because of your incredible generosity, I have already exceeded my goal of $500 for this fundraiser. However, according to the People's Daily newspaper ( http://english.people.com.cn/200702/27/eng20070227_352611.html), there are currently over 76,000 AIDS orphans in China. There are still many, many more children in Anhui and Henan who need help than AOS is currently able to provide, so any more funds you give mean that more children will received care. In addition, it is likely that every dollar you give will be matched by an institutional donor working with AOS. For more details, please see the message below from Ms. Eliza Petrow who is organizing the larger fundraising drive here in Cambridge. To learn more about HIV in China and the AOS program, please see Eliza's excellent presentation at (http://web.mit.edu/jialanw/www/ruralchina.htm). Help me achieve my new goal of raising $1200 by April 15th for this worthy cause. You may give me cash directly (if local), or you may send your check directly to me for *Alliance** for Children Foundation**,*with reference to* **AIDS Orphan Salvation Fund. * For local Cambridge residents, please consider attending the fundraiser this Thursday which includes a viewing of the Oscar-winning documentary "The Blood of Yingzhou District" (http://www.allforchildren.org/events.html). Please forward this email to anyone you think would be interested in learning more about HIV in China.**** Please provide your address so that a proof of donation may be sent to you for tax purposes. My address is Jialan Wang 60 Wadsworth St Apt 8H Cambridge, MA 02142 You may also donate directly to AOS online at http://www.afcfoundation.org/projects.php?donate=1. Again, thank you! To: Jialan Wang There is no exact goal since the needs of the organization are enormous- if we raise more money we can help more kids- if we less money we will help fewer kids and will target the most critical. I think that I would like to raise between $20,000 and $40,000 so that we can continue the current program and expand it to the next county where there are so many kids waiting to be helped and many HIV+ kids as well. There are also some more kids waiting to be helped over the border in Henan province (we are currently helping some there already). I think I found a company that will match dollar for dollar what we raise so in that sense I think it is possible to raise that much. But whatever we do will be great because we can have a huge impact! See you the 8th! Featured in last year's Oscar-winning short documentary "The Blood of Yingzhou District", the organization was started by a local woman to help one girl with AIDS who had lost her parents to the disease and had literally no one to turn to. Now the organization helps over 500 orphaned children get health care, go to school, find adoptive families, and overcome the incredible social stigma of HIV/AIDS. I was really impressed by the organization's efficiency and focus on effective intervention and broad-based support, not just giving food and monetary aid. AOS is working with the local government and is nearly self-sufficient, but it still needs additional donations to build the organizational capacity to expand and help the estimated 1000 AIDS orphans in the local Anhui and Henan provinces. In particular, much of these donations would go toward paying health care workers to make sure the children with the disease get proper treatment. The program has improved care dramatically, achieving over 95% treatment compliance for often-complicated treatment plans in rural communities far away from hospitals. * -- Jialan Wang PhD Candidate in Financial Economics Sloan School of Management http://web.mit.edu/jialanw/www ----- End forwarded message ----- -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The China Forum is part of a broader MIT effort being formulated by the China Strategy Working Group, which has been charged by central administration to look at new ways of fostering ties with China and to identify new initiatives and collaborations that MIT might launch with China in the coming years. It is composed of faculty and staff with interests in and knowledge of greater China. I am the chair of the working group. We have decided to start the China Forum, with the blessings of President Hockfield, in order to raise awareness of China on campus. The Institute-level forum will invite prominent guests from government, academic, and industrial sectors to visit MIT. They will give public speeches on topics of general interest, meet with senior officials, conduct round table discussions comparing and contrasting Chinese and western methodology/approach/ problems, etc. Our hope is that this forum will be a convening point for our faculty and students regarding the shaping of our China Strategy, and will extend MIT's reach in China. The first speaker for the China Forum will be Prof. Yingyi Qian (see attached announcement). This talk will be publicized on the Tech Talk this week, as well as Dome View. However, I hope you can help to publicize it among Chinese students, as I would like to have a great turn out for it. Thanx in advance. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Drawing from the experience last year, here are a few things to keep in mind before you go: - Please educate yourself well if you intend to ask questions, so as to be composed, logical, and hopefully enlightening. Writing down your question beforehand may help. - We may be joined by a group of Lyndon LaRouche supporters who may make points we agree with. However, be aware that they are a political cult with a nutty and questionable leader. We aren't associated with them nor should we appear to be. Below we provide you some resources to learn about the speaker and the issues. The speaker is Lobsang Sangay, and has two roles: a Harvard academic as well as pro-independence activist. He is a second-generation Indian-born Tibetan educated in the Indian school system. His parents are from Lithang in western Sichuan, the main site of the 1959 Khampa rebellion. His uncle fought with the CIA according to himself and went missing in action. As far as can be inferred, he has never set foot in Tibet or China, and has little knowledge about what is going on there except what the exile government says and possibly some personal communication. Keep this background in mind. As an academic at Harvard Law School, he wrote his dissertation on the exile government and its political reforms, which is his field of expertise. Let's give him credit for winning some awards there. In recent years he organized some panel talks at Harvard with Chinese scholars and Tibetologists there. This is one of the papers he published on the subject in case you are interested: http://muse.jhu.edu/journals/journal_of_democracy/v014/14.3sangay.html As an activist, he is hardline and is heavily involved in the Tibetan Youth Congress rising to "national executive member". He talks to the media extensively and is well known among overseas Tibetans. He frequently loses his mind and credibility and there are many careless and glaring comments from him, for example, a recent interview: http://www.ethnicnewz.org/en/harvards-lobsang-sangay-chinese-crackdown-tibet Some other "tough talk" he has made: "These unemployed youths, with their strong sentiments of nationalism, could resort to violence, if they gain access to weapons. Neighboring countries, becoming increasingly nervous about China's 15 percent increase in its defense budget every year for its 3 million-man army, may be willing to send a cache of arms into Tibet, as the CIA did in the late 1950's and '60s." "The Dalai Lama has always advocated non-violence but if the Chinese government doesn't reciprocate, Tibetans will have to rely on traditional means." Today, he is to speak as an activist, yet he will wear a suit and be introduced as an academic along with all the crendentials that come with it. So it is even more important to be prepared. His talk may be like this recent one he gave (about the first 15 min.): http://forum.wgbh.org/wgbh/forum.php?lecture_id=4020 The gist of it is to blame the Chinese government for everything and the tactic is to make a string of misleading and plausible-sounding remarks. There are many resources to counter this. Some are listed below: An extensive rebuttal of the pro-independence tropes by an Indian magazine: http://www.hindu.com/fline/fl1718/17180040.htm An analysis of the claim of the "1.2 million dead" claim with population numbers http://www.case.edu/affil/tibet/booksAndPapers/tibetan.population.in.china.pdf Hopefully these will arm you with the knowledge to be confident in challenging absurd statements you will hear today. Within one day, the death toll rose sharply to nearly 12,000 and is keeping rapidly rising. Most of the victims are children at school and people at work caught under collapsed buildings, since the quake happened during working hours. There are still numerous regular aftershocks, which make people fearful to return home. Millions of people have to sleep in the open, in heavy rain, with no power or water. Facing the devastation in our motherland, the Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA) is calling for support from the whole MIT community. We will hold a table at the student center all day long from Wednesday (May 14th) through Friday (May 16th) to collect donation. The money collected will be used to provide for the survivors basic shelter and food and to help rebuild their homes. We will send the money to the China Red Cross Sichuan Branch. To help keeping the donation procedure transparent, we will need you to provide the following information: name, email, School/Department, Year/Graduate, phone number. Receipts will be provided upon request. We will update the donation information everyday on the MIT CSSA?s webpage (http://cssa.mit.edu/). Meanwhile, the online donation account is being set up and will be available soon. We will update you once this information is ready. At the moment, we also need a lot of volunteers who can contribute his/her valuable time in helping us. The duties include but are not limited to: designing and distributing flyers, maintaining webpage, outreaching and broadcasting. If you are interested in joining us as a volunteer, please send your name, email and contact number to Liang, Fei (liangfei at mit.edu). She will get in touch with you. We appreciate your great help in advance. Please help us to distribute this message to your coworkers and friends. Any suggestion on further showing our support toward this disaster is welcome!
