Dear Friends,
Time: 6:00pm, April 23rd (Wednesday)
Location: TBD (Room Number will be announced tomorrow)
As most people in our community, our attention was drawn to the high profile
protests and counter-protests in London, Paris and San Francisco when the 2008
Olympics Game Torch Relay passed these cities. Tibet seems to be the center of
debate from all the sides involved in those protests. What is really happening
in Tibet? What do ordinary Tibetans regard their daily lives and their future?
Everyone is curious.
To address such curiosity, we are pleased to have the president of Tibet Poverty
Alleviatino Fund, Dr. Arthur N. Holcombe, to give a speech next Wednesday on MIT
campus. The title of his speech will be "March 2008 Riots in Lhasa: Differing
Perceptions, Differing Anger and Resentment. What can be done to help address
the concerns of Tibetans in Tibet?"
Dr. Holcombe served in many postings with the United Nations Development Program
in different developing countries including Afgahnistan, Pakistan, Fiji, Sudan
and China. In 1998 Dr. Holcombe established the Tibet Poverty Alleviation Fund
to promote Tibetan livelihoods and well being in rural areas of the Tibet
Autonomous Region of China. He has lots of first-hand experience from his field
trips to different parts in the region. There will be a question-and-answer
session right after the talk to allow extensive exchange of information and
opinions among the audience and the speaker. We hope Dr. Holcombe's talk can
turn into a good starting point for all of us to learn and understand more
about the history, the facts, and the future of the Tibetan people.
Thank you so much for your attention. And see you on April 23rd (Wednesday) at
6pm.
Refreshment will be provided.
Best Regards
