NCI Workshop on "Cancer Stem Cells as Targets for Cancer Prevention and
Early Detection"

 

The Division of Cancer Prevention at the National Cancer Institute is
committed to bridging the gap between laboratory advances and clinical
applications in Cancer Prevention and Early Detection. We are pleased to
invite you to the workshop on "Cancer Stem Cells as Targets for Cancer
Prevention and Early Detection" that will be held on the NIH campus in
Bethesda, MD, May 14-15, 2007. 

 

Cancer Stem cells represent a small population within a tumor, driving
growth and metastasis. Whereas expansion of normal stem cells is under
genetic and epigenetic constraints, cancer stem cells have escaped these
controls. The goal of this workshop is to evaluate current research on
cancer stem cells and the potential benefits to cancer prevention and early
detection. Keynote speakers include Michael Clarke from Stanford University
and Stewart Sell from the Wadsworth Center and Ordway Research Institute.

 

Topics to be discussed include:  

*              Origin of cancer stem cells

*              Regulation of stem cells and cancer stem cells self-renewal

*              Signaling in normal and malignant stem cells

*              Cancer stem cells' niche

*              Early detection of cancer stem cells

*              Preventive/intervention modalities to control expansion of
cancer stem cells.
