Annotating the Human Genome, in terms of protein fossils Dr. Mark Gerstein Yale University Friday, April 30, 2004 McGovern Auditorium Whitehead Institute 3:00 PM Host: Amy Keating Contact: Brenda Pepe 617-452-2717 http://csbi.mit.edu Sponsored by CSBi Abstract: A central problem for 21st century science will be the analysis and understanding of the human genome. My talk will be concerned with topics within this area, in particular annotating pseudogenes (protein fossils) in the genome. I will discuss a comprehensive pseudogene identification pipeline and storage database we have built. This has enabled use to identify >10K pseudogenes in the human and mouse genomes and analyze their distribution with respect to age, protein family, chromosomal location. One interesting finding is the large number of ribosomal pseudogenes in the human genome, with 80 functional ribosomal proteins giving rise to ~2,000 ribosomal protein pseudogenes. At end I will talk broadly about pseudogenes, in terms of their composition and mutation rates and I will compare pseudogenes in the human with those in a number of other model organisms, including worm, fly, yeast, and various prokaryotes. I will also talk about the problem of identifying pseudogenes in relation to the overall problem of finding genes in genome. http://bioinfo.mbb.yale.edu http://pseudogene.org -- PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS E-MAIL, SEE CONTACT INFO ABOVE Dawn Davis Loring Communications Coordinator Computational and Systems Biology (CSBi) Phone: (617) 324-0150 Fax: (617) 324-0081 Massachusetts Institute of Technology 77 Massachusetts Avenue Building 68 - Room 459 Cambridge, MA 02139 From dloring at MIT.EDU Tue May 4 15:19:31 2004 Received: from biscayne-one-station.mit.edu (BISCAYNE-ONE-STATION.MIT.EDU [18.7.7.80]) by pch.mit.edu (8.12.8p2/8.12.8) with ESMTP id i44JJUos005437 for ; Tue, 4 May 2004 15:19:30 -0400 (EDT) Received: from melbourne-city-street.mit.edu (MELBOURNE-CITY-STREET.MIT.EDU [18.7.21.86])i44JJUmk029304 for ; Tue, 4 May 2004 15:19:30 -0400 (EDT) Received: from davis-loring.mit.edu (DAVIS-LORING.MIT.EDU [18.79.3.245]) (authenticated bits=0) (User authenticated as dloring at ATHENA.MIT.EDU)i44JJTAf028169 (version=TLSv1/SSLv3 cipher=RC4-SHA bits=128 verify=NOT) for ; Tue, 4 May 2004 15:19:29 -0400 (EDT) Message-Id: <5.2.1.1.2.20040504145730.00ac0310 at po14.mit.edu> X-Sender: dloring at po14.mit.edu X-Mailer: QUALCOMM Windows Eudora Version 5.2.1 Date: Tue, 04 May 2004 15:19:29 -0400 To: csbi-events at MIT.EDU Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1 From: csbi-events at mit.edu Subject: [CSBi-events] CSBi Seminar Series ends, Friday May 7 X-BeenThere: csbi-events at mit.edu X-Mailman-Version: 2.1 Precedence: list Reply-To: csbi-events at mit.edu List-Id: CSBi events notifies members of all upcoming events.
