TITLE: Bytes and BTUs: Trends in Data Center Sustainability

SPEAKER:	Steven W. Hammond (National Renewable Energy Laboratory)

ABSTRACT:

In this talk we describe a holistic approach to data center sustainability at
the U.S. DOE National Renewable Energy Lab, which recently completed a new
warm-water, liquid-cooled data center. The new data center is designed for a
PUE of 1.06, which would make it the most energy efficient in the world. In
addition, the new chiller-less data center captures the waste heat generated by
the HPC system and uses that as the primary heat source for the building office
space and laboratories. Any waste heat not utilized by the building is
dissipated via evaporative cooling towers, eliminating the need for mechanical
chillers. These approaches manifest themselves in the integrated "chips to
bricks" approach we took. Finally, the new data center costs less to build than
comparable data centers and will be much cheaper to operate.
