COMPUTATIONAL RESEARCH IN BOSTON SEMINAR
DATE: Friday, December 2, 2005
TIME: 12:30 PM
LOCATION: Building 32, Room 144 (Stata Center)
(Pizza and beverages will be provided outside of Room 32-144.)
TITLE: Toward planetary brain scans, high-resolution monitoring and
measuring of the global ocean and sea-ice system.
SPEAKER: Christopher Hill (Massachusetts Institute of Technology -- EAPS)
ABSTRACT:
This talk will review work underway to develop a high-resolution
monitoring and measuring system for tracking the ocean and sea-ice climate
of the Earth. The work centers on combining large observational data sets
with state-of-the- art numerical simulation tools in a formal mathematical
optimization framework. This is a major computational Earth science
challenge, which involves bringing together large-scale computational
resources, advanced algorithmic and computational science concepts.
