 <http://esd.mit.edu/Faculty_Pages/deneufville/deneufville.htm> Prof.
Richard de Neufville to Discuss "Valuing Flexibility"

Prof. de Neufville is a Professor of Environmental and Civil Engineering in
the Engineering Systems Division. "His research and teaching now focuses
on inserting flexibility into the design of technological systems. Major
industrial and government projects show that the use of "real options",
enabling managers to react to unanticipated events, significantly increases
overall expected performance. This work implies a fundamental shift in the
engineering design paradigm, from a focus on fixed specifications, to a
concern with system performance under the broad range of situations that
could occur." (ESD Faculty
<http://esd.mit.edu/Faculty_Pages/deneufville/deneufville.htm> web site)

 <http://web.mit.edu/dusp/idg/faculty/thompson.html> Prof. Phillip Thompson
to Discuss "Rebuilding New Orleans"

"Phil Thompson is an urban planner and political scientist. He received a
B.A. in Sociology from Harvard University in 1977, a M.U.P. from Hunter
College in 1986, and a PhD. in Political Science from the City University of
New York Graduate Center in 1990. Phil worked as Deputy General Manager of
the New York Housing Authority, and as Director of the Mayor's Office of
Housing Coordination, and also as the principle mayoral liaison to the 1991
New York City Council Re-Districting Commission." (IDG faculty
<http://web.mit.edu/dusp/idg/faculty/thompson.html> website)

"Since the fall of 2005, Prof. Thompson and DUSP graduate students William
Bradshaw (CRE '05) and Leigh Graham have been working with community
groups, churches and labor unions in New Orleans to plan recovery from the
floods that followed the hurricane." (MIT News Office, "

billion New Orleans project," June 14, 2006)

10th <http://www.zoomerang.com/recipient/survey-intro.zgi?p=WEB225JYJCPRBR>
and 20th Anniversary Class Reunions (Classes of 1986 and 1996)

The Center for Real Estate would like to invite members of the Classes of
1986 and 1996 to attend a special dinner in their honor as part of the
Center's Graduation Weekend. It has been a decade or more since you were
students at the Center and a lot has changed. Over the last three years,
the CRE has leveraged its home at one of the premier institutes of
technology by pursuing cutting edge research that produces practical, yet
innovative, tools that are relevant to housing policy, real estate
investment, and commercial development. We are proud to have graduation as
an opportunity to showcase our alums (you!), our students, and our faculty.
While here, we invite you to partake in the graduation activities. All
activities are free of charge.

MITAA / AACRE Externship Program

If you have a project that you think a student would find of interest or if
your firm would be willing to give a current student the opportunity to tour
various divisions within the organization during IAP, January 8 - February
2, 2007, I encourage you to participate as sponsors in the MIT Alumni
Association's Externship Program.

Here is the URL for the Externship program:
<https://alum.mit.edu/gv/volunteer/become/externships/index.html>
https://alum.mit.edu/gv/volunteer/become/externships/index.html.

The deadline for expressing an interest in becoming a sponsor is October 2,
2006. To become an alumni sponsor, an MIT alum has to complete the form you
reach by clicking on the box that says "
<https://alum.mit.edu/gv/volunteer/become/externships/index.html> Become a
sponsor today!". When you complete the form, two things are critical:

1.

For "Extern Preferences" make sure you indicate "Graduate" and
"Center for Real Estate" and
2.

Complete the box that says "Requirements" by saying "Must be a MSRED
candidate"

A number of MIT/CRE students participated last year and it is a great
program. I hope you will consider participating this year.

AACRE Student Host Program Needs You!

The Alumni Association of the CRE (AACRE) is developing a new
program targeted to prospective students outside the Boston area. In this
program, alums will be matched with people in their area who are interested
in the MSRED program. We would ask participating alums to meet with the
candidate and answer any questions they might have about the Center. If you
are interested in participating, please contact Amanda Strong at
<mailto:Amanda.strong at alum.mit.edu> Amanda.strong at alum.mit.edu .

Alumni/ae Weblog

To allow alumni/ae to connect with one another, announce events,
seek career advice, and share business opportunities, CRE has created an
Alumni/ae Weblog ( <http://amps-tools.mit.edu/cre-alumniblog/>
http://amps-tools.mit.edu/cre-alumniblog/). On the weblog, you can find
events and information geared to alumni/ae and see what your fellow
alumni/ae are doing. Post your own news and comments, or send us your
feedback or ideas for the weblog, by e-mailing Joanna Proulx at
<mailto:jbink at mit.edu> jbink at mit.edu.

Calling all Europe-based Alumni/ae

Do you work with or have an interest in European Real Estate? A
network of Europe-based alumni/ae has formed, and their goal is to develop
and expand the real estate network. If you are interested in joining the
MIT/CRE European network, e-mail Nick Spencer (CRE '03) with your contact
details. Nick can be reached at <mailto:nspencer at credogroup.com>
nspencer at credogroup.com.

Calling all San Francisco-based Alumni/ae

CRE alum Ted Horton ('87), is reaching out to San Francisco-based CRE grads.
If you would be interested in "getting together and kicking around deals and
ideas while asking questions and offering gratuitous opinions over a glass
of wine and some good Italian food" on a monthly or bi-monthly basis,
contact Ted at <mailto:theodorehorton at gmail.com> theodorehorton at gmail.com.
The last event was September 11th at Palio d'Asti. Besides the company, the
food is great! The next scheduled get together is 9OCT.

Regional Alumni/ae Organizations

Regionally based alumni/ae organizations can offer valuable
networking and discussion forums for local real estate professionals. If
you would like to start or get involved in a CRE alumni/ae group in your
area, please contact Lisa Davis at <mailto:ldavis at ndevelop.com>
