POWERING THE FUTURE:
<http://web.mit.edu/cre/events/events/partners-meeting-06.html> MIT/CRE
Annual Partners Meeting
CRE will be holding a Partners Meeting on April 5-6, 2006. The topic of the
meeting is Powering the Future, and discussion will focus on energy and
its impact on the built environment.
At this meeting, CREs Partners will gain insight into ways in
which energy technology and resources will affect the real estate industry.
We recognize that this conference is different from the traditional real
estate conference. Indeed, by design, we are seeking to move beyond the
traditional boundaries of the real estate industry to examine other areas
that impact and influence what our Partners do as real estate
practitioners. Without a doubt, energy is having a huge impact on the built
environment, which gave rise to this topic.
Speakers will include David Goldwyn, previously an Assistant Secretary of
Energy for the U.S. at the United Nations, who will provide an overview of
the geopolitical landscape, economist Henry Jacoby of MITs Sloan School,
and Jón Björn Skúlason, who will speak about Icelands transformation into a
hydrogen-based economy. Meeting participants will learn about innovative
energy technologies at the Sloan Automotive Laboratory and MITs Plasma
Fusion Center and will learn about coal as a source of and catalyst for
energy.

HEATHER SMITH MEMORIAL FELLOWSHIP
Amy Merritt Class of 2006 Recipient
The Heather Smith Memorial Fellowship is awarded every year to a

Heather was aboard American Airlines Flight 11 on September 11, 2001.
An awards dinner and benefit fundraiser were held on February 27, 2006, and
attended by Heather Smiths family and friends, members of New England
Women in Real Estate (NEWIRE), and industry professionals.
The recipient of this years award is Amy Merritt. Before coming to MIT,
she worked in an urban redevelopment firm specializing in mixed-use, New
Urbanist, infill projects in Atlanta, Georgia. Amy is the seventh recipient

Seeking <http://web.mit.edu/cre/membership/pdf/CRE%20Members-Thesis.pdf>
Thesis Topics
Our students are beginning to consider topics for thesis research during the
coming summer and were interested in your proposals for thesis topics.
The masters thesis is typically 60-100 pages in length, a tightly focused
piece of research which must be completed in only three months. Theses can
use corporate data, but should involve issues of general interest to the
industry. Past theses have included academic topics, pedagogical topics,
case studies, and feasibility analyses.
Proposals should be about a page in length, and contain a clear question or
problem, proposed methodology, and an estimate of the support you can
provide for the student. Please send your proposals to Maria Vieira,
Associate Director of Education, <mailto:mvieira at mit.edu> mvieira at mit.edu,
or fax to: 617-258-6991.
ALUMNI/AE ASSOCIATION OF THE CENTER FOR REAL ESTATE (AACRE)
News and Updates!
_____
AACRE Student Host Program Needs You!
In 2003, the Center started the Student Host Program. The
Program allows prospective students to visit MIT and CRE, meet students and
faculty, and attend classes. Current students host prospective students and
share their experiences and advice about the program.
The Alumni Association of CRE (AACRE) is developing a new, affiliated
program targeted to prospective students outside the Boston area. In this
program, alums would be matched with people in their area who are interested
in the MSRED program. We would ask participating alums to meet with the
candidate and answer any questions they might have about the Center. If you
are interested in participating, please contact Amanda Strong at
Amanda.strong at alum.mit.edu.
Alumni/ae Networking
Alumni/ae <http://amps-tools.mit.edu/cre-alumniblog/> Weblog
In order to allow our alumni/ae to connect with one another, announce
events, seek career advice, and share business opportunities, CRE has
created an Alumni/ae Weblog (http://amps-tools.mit.edu/cre-alumniblog/). On
the weblog, you can find events and information geared to alumni/ae and see
what your fellow alumni/ae are doing. Post your own news and comments, or
send us your feedback or ideas for the weblog, by emailing Karen MacArthur
at <mailto:macarthr at mit.edu> macarthr at mit.edu.
Calling all Europe-based Alumni/ae
Do you work with or have an interest in European Real Estate? A network of
Europe-based alumni/ae has formed, and their goal is to develop and expand
the real estate network. If you are interested in joining the MIT/CRE
European network, e-mail Nick Spencer (CRE '03) with your contact details.
Nick can be reached at <mailto:nspencer at credogroup.com>
nspencer at credogroup.com.
Calling all San Francisco-based Alumni/ae
CRE alum Ted Horton ('87), is reaching out to San Francisco-based CRE grads.
If you would be interested in "getting together and kicking around deals and
ideas while asking questions and offering gratuitous opinions over a glass
of wine and some good Italian food" on a monthly or bi-monthly basis,
contact Ted at <mailto:theodorehorton at gmail.com> theodorehorton at gmail.com.
Regional Alumni/ae Organizations
Regionally based alumni/ae organizations can provide valuable networking and
specialized discussion of local real estate industry and issues. If you
would like to start or get involved in a CRE alumni/ae group in your local
area, please contact Lisa Davis at ldavis at ndevelop.com.
