The topic of the meeting is ?Powering the Future,? and discussion will focus on energy and its impact on the built environment. At this meeting, CRE?s Partners will gain insight into ways in which energy technology and resources will affect the real estate industry. We recognize that this conference is different from the traditional real estate conference. Indeed, by design, we are seeking to move beyond the traditional boundaries of the real estate industry to examine other areas that impact and influence what our Partners do as real estate practitioners. Without a doubt, energy is having a huge impact on the built environment, which gave rise to this topic. Speakers will include David Goldwyn, previously an Assistant Secretary of Energy for the U.S. at the United Nations, who will provide an overview of the geopolitical landscape, economist Henry Jacoby of MIT?s Sloan School, and J?n Bj?rn Sk?lason, who will speak about Iceland?s transformation into a hydrogen-based economy. Meeting participants will learn about innovative energy technologies at the Sloan Automotive Laboratory and MIT?s Plasma Fusion Center and will learn about coal as a source of and catalyst for energy. _____ HEATHER SMITH MEMORIAL FELLOWSHIP Amy Merritt Class of 2006 Recipient The Heather Smith Memorial Fellowship is awarded every year to a female graduate student at the MIT Center for Real Estate. The fellowship was established to honor and remember Heather Smith, a member of the Boston real estate community and the fianc?e of Mike Jammen, CRE Class of 1997. Heather was aboard American Airlines Flight 11 on September 11, 2001. An awards dinner and benefit fundraiser were held on February 27, 2006, and attended by Heather Smith?s family and friends, members of New England Women in Real Estate (NEWIRE), and industry professionals. The recipient of this year?s award is Amy Merritt. Before coming to MIT, she worked in an urban redevelopment firm specializing in mixed-use, New Urbanist, infill projects in Atlanta, Georgia. ALUMNI/AE ASSOCIATION OF THE CENTER FOR REAL ESTATE (AACRE) News and Updates! _____ AACRE Student Host Program Needs You! In 2003, the Center started the Student Host Program. The Program allows prospective students to visit MIT and CRE, meet students and faculty, and attend classes. Current students host prospective students and share their experiences and advice about the program. The Alumni Association of CRE (AACRE) is developing a new, affiliated program targeted to prospective students outside the Boston area. In this program, alums would be matched with people in their area who are interested in the MSRED program. We would ask participating alums to meet with the candidate and answer any questions they might have about the Center. If you are interested in participating, please contact Amanda Strong at Amanda.strong at alum.mit.edu. Alumni/ae Networking Alumni/ae Weblog In order to allow our alumni/ae to connect with one another, announce events, seek career advice, and share business opportunities, CRE has created an Alumni/ae Weblog (http://amps-tools.mit.edu/cre-alumniblog/).
