Every year is an exciting year at the Center for Real Estate and the State of the Center presentations reflect that energy. David Geltner became Director of the Center in July 2003 and he titled his State of Center, "Coming of Age". The next year, Tony Ciochetti joined the Center as Chairman and the State of the Center was called, "Turning the Corner". Over the last year, we have gained tremendous momentum and personally, I would describe our current efforts as "Spanning the Globe - Building the Future". I encourage you to view the State of the Center webcast. It offers an invigorating, insightful, and informative look into the Center and the real estate industry. Included in this issue of the e-newsletter are the following: * Alumni/ae Reunion Weekend: 9/29/2005 to 10/1/2005 Links State of the Center and Research Webcast Industrial Sector Overview, Real Deal, and Entrepreneurship Notes ==> VISIT MITREX! * Save the Dates! The theme for the weekend was "Real Estate Theory vs. Practice" . The Center takes seriously MIT's mission to make the world a better place by pursuing research and activities that can have a real impact. That seriousness and relevance of purpose was reflected over the course of the weekend. We started the ARW with Robert Bransfield of AMB. Robert talked about AMB and the strategic need for companies to tie global logistics and distribution with real estate. What a contrast when Bill Wheaton talked about urban economics and how industrial development is typically the lowest and "worst" use for land! Bruce Freedman provided additional support for investing in industrial assets -- a lower risk, competitive return property type -- when he described a Real Deal that netted about $100 million over a six year period. On Friday, the Center hosted Bob Danziger, Founder of Northland Investment, and Ken Morse, Managing Director of MIT's Entrepreneurship Center, and they established that entrepreneurship can definitely be taught. The State of the Center report followed the presentations. We webcast the presentation and we hope you will visit our home page (web.mit.edu/cre) and view it. The State of the Center not only outlined the accomplishments of the past year, but provided a blue print for the future. There were several resounding themes -- all of the themes that introduce these e-newsletters -- "interdisciplinary, innovative, industry relevant, international". I would add one more: interdependent. Partnering with the Institute, the Industry, and with our Graduates has become increasingly important. I encourage you to visit MITREX to view the presentations and to visit our web site to take a look at the webcast. If you have not responded to our Reunion Survey, a survey we are encouraging all alums to answer (even those who were unable to attend this year's ARW), do so by clicking on the following link: ALUMNI REUNION SURVEY. _____ SAVE THE DATES!
