New Visions: The 20th Anniversary Celebration -- Save the Dates!
MIT/CRE 20th Anniversary -- March 18 - 20, 2005
<http://web.mit.edu/cre/events/events/20thanniversary.html>
http://web.mit.edu/cre/events/events/20thanniversary.html
Keep your eyes pealed for your invitation to the Center for Real Estate's
20th Anniversary weekend March 18 - 20, 2005! The weekend is truly a
collaborative effort that will feature an impressive array of activities and
people. David Cohan (CRE '92) has developed "Back to the Future: REfresh,
REvisit, REdiscover," an educational "update" that is scheduled for Friday
afternoon, "REfresh" will soar into action with a luncheon presentation by
Larry Bacow, co-founder of the Center and current President of Tufts
University. Following Dr. Bacow, you will have to make some hard choices --
Updates in Real Estate Finance with Tod McGrath or Designing for Tomorrow's
Developments with Dennis Frenchman. Following those sessions, the choices
continue -- Building for Tomorrow's Developments Today with Jim Becker and
Chris Gordon or Leadership in the Real Estate Industry, taught by Gloria
Schuck. Our own "Click and Clack", Ray Torto and Bill Wheaton, will
conclude Back to the Future by providing a brief summary of where real
estate markets are and where they are likely to head. Ray and Bill will
then challenge those in attendance to pick their brains about literally any
real estate topic. Prizes will be given for the most interesting, difficult
and profound questions........
The day continues with the official start of the New Visions Conference --
Cities in the New Century: Models of Urban Growth. After being introduced
by Dean Adele Santos, MIT President Susan Hockfield will offer the
welcoming remarks followed by a reception. The next day, the meeting will
be convened. Through the lens of four project case studies in Korea (New
Songdo and the Digital Media City), the United Kingdom (Canary Wharf), and
Cambridge, MA (University Park), we will explore the drivers of cities in
the new century and the value proposition these projects represent in
social, economic and physical terms. How are these projects being financed?
What kinds of partners are being approached and how are these partnerships
and their structures unique? Are there special benefits for tenants? What
kinds of tenants seek out these projects? What steps are being taken to
establish a sense of place? We will be posing these and other questions to
our guest presenters. In the afternoon, we will divide the audience into
topical groups charged with generating their own thoughts on development
themes and models for urban growth in the new century. Our luncheon
speaker is one of the founders Biogen, Nobel Laureate, Dr. Phillip A. Sharp.
Michael Jammen (CRE '97), Toby Kramer (CRE '91), and Jane Seiden (CRE '88)
are working to create a memorable gala. The location is the Park Plaza
Hotel & Towers. The musicians are ready, the food will be delectable, and
you are invited to enjoy the company of classmates and members. The next
day, the Alumni Association of the Center for Real Estate (AACRE) invites
you to be their guest for brunch.
A lot is planned and we hope you will be a part of it! On-line registration
is available at the following URL

New Century Cities Symposium a Success!
<http://web.mit.edu/cre/events/events/ncc-symposium.html>
http://web.mit.edu/cre/events/events/ncc-symposium.html
On January 18th and 19th, some 150 invited participants convened on January
18 for a two-day symposium on New Century Cities. They hailed from four
continents, and from disciplines ranging from traditional
city-buildersarchitects, city planners, and construction firmsto the
newest partners in the city development process-- information technology,
communications, and media firms (including Cisco, HP, and IBM), as well as
historians, educators, and artists. What brought them together was a
shared belief that the cities of the next century will be radically unlike
the cities of centuries past. For more on the New Century Cities symposium,
visit the URL above.
