New Visions: The 20th Anniversary Celebration -- Program Update
MIT/CRE 20th Anniversary -- March 18 - 20, 2005
 <http://web.mit.edu/cre/events/events/20thanniversary.html>
http://web.mit.edu/cre/events/events/20thanniversary.html

The Center for Real Estate's 20th Anniversary begins with a trip back to the
future to "REfresh, REvisit, REdiscover". Along for the trip are some
familiar faces such as Center co-founder, Larry Bacow, former Building Tech
professor, Jim Becker, and MIT's own Fric and Frac, Bill Wheaton and Ray
Torto. Once back to the present, newly minted MIT President, Dr. Susan
Hockfield, will welcome you the to Center's conference on "Vision Driven
Cities".

Vision-Driven Cities will examine the ways in which emerging technology
allows an urban area to be created specifically to fulfill a need or vision:
a financial district, a creative community, a logistics hub. At the
conference, the successes and lessons of pioneering work being done in 3
focal cities--New Songdo City outside Seoul, Korea; Canary Wharf in London;
and what has been termed the "Republic of MIT" in Cambridge,
Massachusetts--will be examined and extrapolated to future developments.
The keynote speaker at the conference is Dr. Phillip Sharp, Nobel Laureate,
Institute Professor, and Director of the McGovern Institute for Brain
Research. Dr. Sharp is also a founder of Biogen (now Biogen Idec). Capping
the conference events, the Center will present its first set of
"Visioneering" awards to Hank Spaulding, CRE's co-founder and pioneering
genius; the Walt Disney Company; and Gerald Hines. The excitement is
palpable. I hope you will be a part of it.

A complete agenda for the 20th Anniversary events can be found at
<http://web.mit.edu/cre> http://web.mit.edu/cre.  (Note The preferential
hotel rate at the Hotel @MIT, the University Park Hotel, has been reduced
from $159 to $139 until March 2, 2005!)

Bill Wheaton's "Housing Bubbles" Presentation on MITREX
http://cre-mitrex.mit.edu/index.html

What is a Real Estate “Bubble”? •Definition A:repeated ups and downs in
prices with the appearance of some predictability, but with no implication
as to cause.–Up and down economic shocks to the Housing market?–Inherent
cyclic dynamic by the market to shocks? •Definition B: a run up in prices
specifically caused by unsustainable beliefs on the part of market
participants. –How to assess? Certainly not with aggregate data.–CSW/FISERV
recent buyer survey. To learn more about "bubbles" log on to MITREX!
