MITCenter for Real Estate

Interdisciplinary   o    Innovative    o    Industry Relevant   o
International

Greetings!

Things have been so busy at the Center for Real Estate that November flew by
without an e-newsletter! However, this time of year always provides an
opportunity to catch up by conducting a mini "Year in Review". A graduate
of the Center once asked me what the CRE was doing to address some of the
big issues facing the world. Caught by surprise, I was speechless. Well,
now I have regained my composure and I have an answer! MIT "seeks to
develop in each member of the MIT community the ability and passion to work
wisely, creatively, and effectively for the betterment of humankind." MIT
seeks to make the world a better place; and MIT/CRE's goal is to build the
future, a future that embraces technology and humanity. Our mission is to
improve the built environment, raise the level of sophistication and
professionalism in the real estate industry, and serve as the focal point
for real estate related academic activity. Our vision is big and it is its
magnitude that gives us the ability to make an impact that can change the
world. If only I had been able to articulate that answer when asked the
question! Over the last year we have pursued this goal with gusto.

*

	The Center played a catalytic role in looking at the impact of
technology on cities ( <http://web.mit.edu/cre/research/ncc/index.html> New
Century Cities, 1/2005)
*

	We reached out to our graduates and to the industry to identify and
understand vision-driven cities (20th Anniversary, 3/2005)
*

	Pursued research that has grave policy implications for high cost of
living areas ( <http://web.mit.edu/cre/research/hai/index.html> Housing
Affordability Initiative)
*

	Offered  <http://web.mit.edu/cre/events/events/cre-fire.html> Forums
on Issues and Innovations in Real Estate near (Los Angeles and San
Francisco, CA) and far (Shanghai and Beijing, China; Frankfurt and Munich,
Germany) and in the process addressed a number of topical and
thought-provoking issues
*

	Provided alums with an opportunity to re-connect with the Center
while updating their skill set (
<http://web.mit.edu/cre/events/events/20thanniversary.html> REfresh,
REvisit, REdiscover in March 2005 and Alumni/ae Reunion Weekend, September
2005), and
*

	Re-invigorated our curriculum and developed academic modules
designed to reflect the international nature of the space markets (
<http://web.mit.edu/cre/events/events/europe2005.html> Class of 2005 trip to
Europe).

We are doing a great deal to raise the level of scholarship to make sure
that we are relevant yet idealistic, innovative but practical, scholarly but
accessible. Building the future is a capital-laden endeavor so I hope that
you will say "yes" when you are asked to provide financial support to the
Center -- when you get the letter in the mail, the call from a current
student, or an e-mail from me or the Chairman. The Giving URL is as
follows:  <http://web.mit.edu/cre/giving/index.html>

REUNION WEEKEND>  ALUMNI/AE REUNION WEEKEND (9/29 - 10/1)
http://web.mit.edu/cre/events/events/alumniweekend05.html

The Center held its third Alumni Reunion Weekend September 29th to October
1st. In the coming years, the Center's goal is to maximize attendance by
focusing on the fifth year anniversaries of classes. So next year the
Classes of 1986, 1991, 1996, and 2001 will be on deck. The weekends have
produced some wonderful content and activities. Take a look at some of the
activities that took place during ARW 2005!

 <http://web.mit.edu/cre/index.html> INDUSTRY PARTNERS' VISIT (12/1 - 12/2)
http://web.mit.edu/cre/index.html

There is a new term at the MIT/CRE. It is "partnership". Our old
membership program has been revamped to embrace partnerships --
relationships bound by mutual value. The Center now has two levels of
partnership -- supporting partners ($10k) and sustaining partners ($20k).
Caisse de depot, Investments PSP, MMA Financial, Jones Lang LaSalle, and
Spaulding and Slye are our sustaining partners. Between December 1st and
2nd, we saw "mutuality" at work. Representatives were invited to meet with
<http://web.mit.edu/biology/www/facultyareas/facresearch/hopkins.shtml> Dr.
Nancy Hopkins, a member of MIT's <http://web.mit.edu/ccr/> Center for
Cancer Research. Dr. Hopkins provided a tour of her laboratory, a brief
history of the Center for Cancer Research, and an overview of her work as a
basic scientist. Her zeal and enthusiasm were contagious and effectively
conveyed the thrill of discovery. The next day, our industry leaders shared
their wisdom during small group meetings with students over breakfast.
Following breakfast, we had a full day of presentations on international
strategy, innovations in housing finance, and leadership. Not only did the
days' events capture "partnership" but it also embodied "techno humanity".
Building the future not only requires technical skills, but "people" skills
as well.

A class of 15 graduate students from MIT's Center for Real Estate (MIT/CRE)
will get a firsthand view of real estate finance and development in Europe
when they visit England and France from January 19 through January 28. The
group is the second led abroad by Professor Tony Ciochetti (for information
about the first trip see Europe Class
<http://web.mit.edu/cre/events/events/europe2005.html> Trip 2005), chairman
of the MIT/CRE, and it represents a growing focus at the Center on the
globalization of real estate. For more information about the trip, visit
our web site.
