The MIT/CRE ALUMNI/AE REUNION WEEKEND a great success! (September 30 - October 2, 2004) http://web.mit.edu/cre/events/events/alumniweekend04.html. Over 70 graduates of the Center for Real Estate engaged in a wonderful range of activities over the course of three days. On Thursday, Jay Timon ('98), Matt Smith ('00), and Ben Brubaker ('04) provided an overview of the retail industry and newly minted Spaulding Award Winner Randy Nichols ('89) presented Clayton Lane, his mixed-use project in Denver, Colorado. On Friday, Bill Wheaton was the keynote speaker for the alumni symposium. Discussing the impact of Boston's Big Dig on adjoining real estate prices, Prof. Wheaton focused on the "park effect" and the "transportation effect". Following the symposium, graduates and students returned to the Center for a demonstration of the MIT Real Estate Exchange. Those present acted as an impromptu focus group, offering excellent feedback as we look at Phase 2 improvements to MITREX. About 35 to 40 people toured the Stata Center, a building where "usable" space can be measured in cubic terms; the Stata Center has 6 million cubic feet of space but 720,000 square feet, 60% to 70% of which is "usable". Following the tour of the Stata Center, David Geltner presented his vision of the Center for Real Estate's future. His presentation was followed by a reception at the MIT Museum honoring the Class of 2004 and Randy Nichols as the 2004 recipient of the Spaulding Award. At the graduation on Saturday, Dr. Hong-Bin Kang (MIT PhD, '80) addressed the Class of 2004. Dr. Kang spoke eloquently, stating that "The true city builders of today are the enterprising real estate developers. Like able impresarios, they draw money, talents and technology to produce places in cities around the world." Over the course of the weekend, graduates came from East and West, reconnecting with classmates, meeting the "new alums", and swapping stories with the alums to be -- the Class of 2005. The City's plan to redevelop the area bound by the Hudson River, 8th Avenue, 42nd Street and 28th Street will significantly transform the future of the City, turning acres of rail yards into a thriving center of culture, sports, tourism, and entertainment. However, the plan is not without its critics, who argue that it should be revised and phased differently, and that alternative uses should be considered for the proposed stadium site on the Western Yard.. Join us to hear what the leading planners and architects on both sides of this debate have to say about the future of New York's Far West Side. How can the City capitalize on the momentum generated by these redevelopment efforts while simultaneously taking into account the funding necessary for other much needed capital projects? Is this where the City's planning priority should be? Is the plan for expanded commercial development feasible? Join us, the event is free of charge! MIT/CRE OPEN HOUSE -- OCTOBER 25, 2004 The 2004 Open House was held on Monday, October 25, 6:00-8:00 pm at the Center for Real Estate. Potential applicants were literally sitting in the aisles and were full of questions for the faculty, staff, and for the three alumni panelists (Jamie Pennington '02, Amanda Strong '02, and Jay Valenta '03) in attendance. The group was energetic and engaged. For those of you who referred people to us -- thanks so much and keep up the good work!
