g.. Reminders and Notices
Greetings!
In the last year, I have seen the Center grow and change in both big and
small ways. In addition to our usual activities, we have accomplished the
following:
a.. Partnered with the Alumni Association of the CRE (AACRE) to hold
regional events in Miami and New York City.
b.. Organized a curriculum committee that has completed an in-depth review
of the Centers core courses and started to implement changes to ensure the
core's continued relevance.
c.. Negotiated an increase in MITs financial commitment to the CRE.
d.. Organized and launched the NewVisions campaign. To date, we have
raised almost $575,000!
e.. Hired Assistant Professor Lynn Fisher . Prof. Fisher is currently
teaching Real Estate Economics and Housing Markets.
f.. Conducted a search for and hired Brian "Tony" Ciochetti as the Center
s new Thomas G. Eastman Chairman.
g.. Started the process of restructuring industry membership focusing on a
true value proposition.
h.. Marketed and launched our 2004 summer Professional Development
Courses, with new courses in entrepreneurship, affordable housing, and green
development. We also launched a new on-line registration system for the PDC
s.
i.. Surveyed the graduates of the Center for Real Estate to get their
input into the Centers strategic planning process.
j.. Launched the MIT Real Estate Exchange (MITREX), an on-line data
management tool that stores documents relevant to the real estate industry.
k.. Conducted the Centers first thesis webcast. The webcast highlighted
a sample of the student theses and invited webcast viewers to provide input.
l.. Supported and initiated significant new research projects -- New
Century Cities, the Affordable Housing Initiative, and the Commercial Real
Estate Data Laboratory.
m.. Rescued the Construction Engineering and Management program and
integrated key courses into the Centers course offerings.
These are just some of our achievements in the past year. Over the next
year, we hope to achieve even more. We have an ambitious program for the
alumni reunion weekend, a research workshop for IAP, and the Centers 20th
Anniversary conference ("Ground Zero -- MIT/CRE: At the Nexus of the Real
Estate Industry") scheduled for March 2005.
We are reaching out to the alums of the Center for Real Estate and asking
you to help us to continue to grow, to help us in our efforts to be the
foremost source of research and information about the real estate industry
domestically and internationally. If you are a real estate professional,
being able to access information, and people with information, is a
competitive advantage. After all, "knowledge is power".
To grow, the Center needs money and the involvement of our three key
constituents -- graduates, industry, and MIT. Our fundraising goals for
the alumni NewVisions campaign are three-fold:
a.. To raise $500,000 by May 28, 2004. We achieved this goal and have
raised $573,185 to date.
b.. To raise $1.2 million in the overall campaign. We have raised almost
50% of the target amount.
c.. To match or exceed the level of participation for the 15th
anniversary. To date we have an overall participation rate of 44%;
participation for the 15th anniversary was 66%. We are two thirds of the
way there.....
In many ways, our most important goal is our participation goal. We want
everyone to make a gift at some level -- $5 for each of the Centers 20
years or even better, $25 for each of the Centers 20 years -- by June 30,
2004. The amount of your gift is important, but it is equally important for
you to give. If each graduate who has not pledged committed to supporting
the Center with a $100 or $500 gift each year for the next five years, the
Center would raise $200,000 to $900,000. These dollars would be used to
support the Center's work, work that is important to our graduates and to
the real estate industry.
Summarized below are the giving and participation levels of each class as of
