Dear Alums,

The Center is launching its 20th Anniversary Celebration with a
self-assessment and re-asssessment of its strategic plan. As we develop
this plan, we will be reaching out to the alumni/ae community. Keep an eye
out for an alumni survey from David Geltner requesting your feedback and
input. Of all of our constituent groups, the alumni/ae are our largest,
most committed, and most influential and we need your help.

CRE 20th ANNIVERSARY FUNDRAISING THEME

Thanks for participating in the selection of the Center's 20th anniversary
theme. The top choice was (drum roll please):

CRE: 20 Years of Building the Future

ALUMNI REUNION WEEKEND -- 9/30/2003 - 10/4/2003 -- SAVE THE DATES and
PARTICIPATE
(http://web.mit.edu/cre/events.html)

Originally, we were planning activities for the days surrounding the MIT/CRE
graduation, but the entire week has become a celebration! We encourage all
alumni to participate. Members of the Classes of 1988, 1993, and 1998 who
will be celebrating their 15th, 10th, and 5th anniversaries, respectively,
may want to plan additional reunion activities that complement the ones that
are currently scheduled:
  September 30th (http://web.mit.edu/cre/events.html#politicalprocess)
  12:30pm - 3:30pm
REAL ESTATE AND THE POLITICAL PROCESS

Real Estate is a source of revenue for increasingly financially strapped
jurisdictions; it is the means by which communities are shaped physically,
economically, and socially; and it is often a regulatory and political
target. Each panelist will briefly discuss--each from a particular point of
view--planner, municipal official, legal expert, developer and retailer--
how to improve and enhance the process by which these parties reach the
decisions that have such a far-reaching impact on the built environment and
life today.

Keynote Speaker: The Honorable Thomas M. Menino, Mayor of Boston

  October 2nd (http://web.mit.edu/cre/events.html#reunion)

ICSC SCHOOL NAMED FOR CRE CHAIRMAN John T. Riordan

The name of the International Council of Shopping Centers’ school for
management, marketing and leasing specialists has been changed to the John
T. Riordan ICSC School for Professional Development in honor of Riordan’s
service as long-time head of the worldwide trade association. Riordan has
served as MIT/CRE Thomas G. Eastman Chairman since 2001. ICSC today has
approximately 44,000 members in some 80 countries. The schools are held a
number of times each year in locations in the US and abroad and feature as
faculty some of the top names in the shopping center industry from around
the world. A scholarship program has also been established in Riordan’s
name.

FALL RECRUITMENT

The Center's recruitment efforts move into high gear during the Fall. We
are asking you to e-mail us the contact information for two people that you
think would be good candidates for the program. E-mails should be directed
to me (marionoc at mit.edu), Maria Vieira (mvieira at mit.edu), or Stephanie
Bright (sbright at mit.edu). We will send each nominee information about the
program and will indicate that you have recommended them. It is quite
flattering to the nominees, extremely helpful to the Center, and a nice way
to provide career development information to people that you know and may be
mentoring. So far, we have received three nominations. I hope that there
will be more!
