Dear MIT Community,

This fall we have seen an unprecedented increase in the amount of people using wheeled devices inside buildings in particular in the basement of academic buildings. The MIT Police would like to take this opportunity to remind our students and staff members that the operation of bicycles, in-line skates, skateboards, Segways or any other form of wheeled transportation, except medical devices, in Institute buildings or parking structures is prohibited. A fine of $25.00 will be imposed to those found in violation of this Institute policy: http://police.mit.edu/bicycle-safety-information.

Also be reminded that bicycles found illegally parked or attached to stairwells, handrails, HP Ramps, light posts or fire chains, will be removed by MIT Parking and Transportation. In order to obtain the release of your bicycle, you will have to go to the Parking and Transportation office in the basement of the Student Center and pay a fine of $50 to retrieve your bicycle. MIT is not responsible for damage to your bicycle or lock.

KNOW THE RULES

It is the responsibility of all individuals operating bicycles and non-pedestrian devices on campus to make themselves familiar with MIT regulations. A lack of knowledge will not be accepted as grounds for dismissal of citations or enforcement actions.

REGISTER YOUR BIKE

Protect your investment by registering your bike. MIT recommends that all bikes be registered.
