Dear Biology Community,

We are writing to share the results of the 2026 mentoring survey. Thank you to the 191 people who responded - we appreciate your input. The survey results from all three years can be viewed here<https://tableau.mit.edu/#/site/IR/workbooks/9952/views>.

We are particularly grateful to those of you who took the time to share thoughtful comments about the strategies that you use to engage with your mentors. You can find the submitted suggestions attached (lightly edited to remove information that could reveal the identities of individuals). We encourage you to look through these notes for ideas that might work for you.

We are gratified to see some positive trends in the aggregated data over the past three years and note the progressive increase in satisfaction regarding overall experiences and different aspects of communication. The broader trends are important, but we recognize that individual experiences vary and that we all need to continue to work to build strong two-way mentoring relationships. The data-driven evaluation provided by this survey continues to inform our departmental efforts and activities.

Although participation was down this year and we didn’t quite make our boba tea target, we look forward to celebrating with you all next year.

Thank you for your contributions as we strive to build a strong community and enable exceptional science. We hope you will respond to the survey again next year, and we encourage you to bring us your ideas about how to strengthen the MIT Biology training experience.
