7.105 Ethics for Biologists and Engineers
(New)
6 Units: 2-0-4
Prereq: None
T3-5 (66-148<http://whereis.mit.edu/map-jpg?mapterms=66>)
Explores how to apply an ethical framework to working with living systems. Students examine case studies related to biological research and bioengineering alongside readings by ethical thinkers from Aristotle to Martin Luther King, Jr. Topics for consideration include justice, rights, research integrity and bias, human clinical trials, genetic engineering in human diseases and aging, creating human-animal hybrids, and the promise and peril of AI. Discussion-based, with the aim of introducing students to new ways of thinking.
“Ethics for Engineers was an incredibly interesting and useful class. Thinking about topics from my problem sets and classes in an ethical light even facilitated my interest in the problem sets.”
Meagan Rowlett, BE
“The discussions were led with intention and allowed me to learn from my peers. I would highly recommend this class!”
Katie Bailey, ChemE
“Ethics for Engineers opens the door to a mentality defining the why behind the daily routine, the thought process guiding us through the momentary decisions, whose cumulative effect results in scientific breakthroughs.”
Ana Florescu-Ciobotaru, 5-7 / 10B
