Hello Biology Department members,

This is a pleasant reminder of a new request for proposal process and January deadlines for financial support for events/programs that foster community within the department, promote inclusiveness for students, postdocs, staff, and faculty, and support the well-being of our members.

Effective Spring 2025, we are implementing a simple application process to make the availability of funds more transparent. We will continue to fund established community groups or those that have outgrown the SoS Dean’s Quality of Life Grants, and we will also consider supporting relatively inexpensive one-time events. Events seeking support should be targeted to the Biology Department community and be aligned with our mission to advance biology-related research, education, and service. The department head will make final funding decisions, with advice and input from senior department staff. With this new process, we aim to allocate limited funds in a systematic and equitable fashion and better track funding allocations and outcomes.

The call for proposals for Biology funding will be issued in advance of each of the Fall and Spring terms. Grants of up to $3,000/year will be considered for Biology community organizations. We will also accept proposals for one-time events/programs, up to $500 each, on a rolling basis.

Recipients will be asked to submit a summary at the end of the semester describing their activities, schedule, final cost, community participation, and impact.

Note that funding cannot cover equipment (cameras, computers, furniture, etc.), house parties, research, or be used to support charities.

Submission deadlines for this cycle:

SoS Dean’s Quality of Life Grants: {extended to} January 24, 2025
Biology Community Organization Grants: January 31, 2025
Biology One-Time Program/Event Grant: rolling basis, up to May 1, 2025.

Please follow the road map below to determine the applicable funding stream.

If you have questions, please let me know.

Best regards,

Rebecca Chamberlain
