Subject: 2023 Naval Academy Science & Engineering Conference
We are writing to invite up to four undergraduate students from MIT to attend the 12th Naval Academy Science and Engineering Conference<https://www.usna.edu/NASEC/index.php> (NASEC), to be held 5-7 November 2023 in Annapolis, Maryland. This year's conference, titled Genetics: Understanding and Addressing Today's Challenges, is organized around the themes of genetic technologies, use of genetic data, and genetics in public health.

There is no registration cost for the conference, and NASEC can additionally offer no-cost lodging and select meals to confirmed attendees for the duration of the event. Please see below for more details.

Sincerely,

The NASEC Team:

Reza Malek-Madani, Dean of Research
Cody Brownell, Professor of Mechanical & Nuclear Engineering
Zoe Sooter, MIDN USN
NASEC at usna.edu<mailto:NASEC at usna.edu>

---------- CONFERENCE DETAILS ----------

A main objective of NASEC is to bring together undergraduate students from a wide variety of institutions of higher education to foster discussions about STEM and the challenges our nation faces in solving critical technical issues. Keynote speakers from academia, government, and industry will present their perspectives on the main topics of the conference to the attendees. In addition to the speakers and panelists, the conference will consist of hands-on work and small-group discussion, student organized and directed, on a relevant subtopic. A final presentation prepared by the student groups and delivered on the final day of NASEC constitutes the main deliverable of this conference. More information is available at the NASEC website, https://www.usna.edu/NASEC/<https://www.usna.edu/AcResearch/NASEC/index.php>.

In addition to the activities above, NASEC hosts a student poster session to allow students involved in research or design projects an opportunity to talk about their work with faculty and peers. While we do not require attendees to present a poster, this has been a highlight of the conference over the last few years and we encourage participation.

There is no registration cost and the Naval Academy will not collect any funds from participants. USNA will offer lodging in a local hotel (shared rooms for students), bus transportation between the hotel and the Academy, and most meals and refreshments during NASEC 2023. The student attendees (and/or their home institutions) will be responsible for the transportation arrangements and costs for the students to get to the conference hotel by 11:00am on Sunday, 5 November and to return home on Tuesday evening, 7 November (the conference ends by 2:00pm on Tuesday).
