Dear MIT Community,

On September 18th, Puerto Rico’s weakened infrastructure suffered severe hits with Hurricane Fiona. The Category 1 hurricane brought many catastrophic damages, including extreme rainfall that inundated the island with 30 inches of rainwater. As a result, Puerto Rico’s most vulnerable communities experienced floods, mudslides, power outages, and more, leaving thousands of families without their homes or belongings.

Hurricane Fiona’s aftermath and recovery continues to be an uphill battle. Currently, out of nearly 3 million Puerto Rican inhabitants, 829,0131 remain without electrical power and 265,5482 without potable water. In addition, even though some citizens have regained these utilities, nearly no community remained unscathed of the hurricane’s billions of dollars in damages to roads, hospitals, bridges, schools, and so much more. Though FEMA allocated $700 per family in emergency relief funds, some municipalities were not included in Puerto Rico’s emergency declaration leaving many people without a way to rebuild their losses.

Despite these limitations, Puerto Ricans across the globe have united in efforts to rebuild all that was lost. Yet, the resources available to do so are limited and a lot more help is needed. The Association of Puerto Rican Students at MIT (APR) and the Boricua Graduate Community (BGC) request your help to support people most affected by the devastating Hurricane Fiona. You can help by donating through Venmo<https://account.venmo.com/u/aprmit> to @aprmit. These funds will be delivered directly to some of the following active non-profits in Puerto Rico:

  *   Fundación de Mochileando 100x35 (more info<https://www.mochileando.com/fundacion-m100x35-index>)
  * Hogar de niños Regazo de Paz (more info<https://www.regazodepaz.com/about-us>)
  * Iglesia de Dios Pentecostal MI (more info<https://www.facebook.com/iglesiasalinaspueblo/>)

As we learn more, other organizations may be added to this list in hopes of reaching as many communities as possible. Together, our small acts of charity can make all the difference for affected Puerto Ricans on the island. APR and BGC thank you for your participation and solidarity with our cause, because only together can we accelerate Puerto Rico’s recovery and prosperity.

Puerto Rico Se Levanta,

Gabriella Aponte
