Dear Course 7, 5-7, and 6-7 majors,
I am writing to pass on information regarding ethics in engineering courses that might be of interest to some of you.
Ethics for Engineers<https://docs.google.com/document/d/12fAxb-sCl5xehKN2n9NAfJUvc8dsk2uL45KUGlQCRdg/edit?usp=sharing> (6.9320) (2-0-4) also 20.005/1.082/2.900/10.01/16.676/22.014. Four sections offered each semester — one with biotechnology focus, one with artificial intelligence focus, and two with broad sweep.
Prof. Regina Barzilay is offering a new (6-unit) course Fall 2022. Work closely with her in a small class that combines lecture and discussion.
6.S040: Computational Foundations for Ethical ML in Life Sciences<https://canvas.mit.edu/courses/16586/assignments/syllabus> (2-0-4)
This course focuses on the ethical principles that guide research and development of machine learning algorithms with biological and clinical applications. We will cover common pitfalls in data preparation and algorithm design that lead to biased and unsafe systems. We will then explore algorithmic solutions that can address these deficiencies. Such methods include automatic bias detection, algorithms for robust learning in the presence of bias, privacy-preserving data access, and methods for uncertainty estimation. We will also discuss the impact of regulatory policies on algorithm design and ethical considerations. The class will combine lectures and group discussions. To this end, the enrollment will be limited to 20 students per session. The final grade will be determined by a project, written assignments, and participation in class discussions.
Ethics for Engineers is co-requisite or pre-requisite for the class.
Schedule: Thursdays: L01 12:30-2:30, room 24-307 or L02 2:30-4:30, room 24-307
To register, add 6.S040 Special Subject and input 6 units.
