Dear Students,

The Biology Department is now soliciting nominations for the 2023 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship<https://goldwaterscholarship.gov/> and Excellence in Education Program. The scholarship was established by the U.S. Congress in 1986 to pay tribute to Senator Barry M. Goldwater and to foster and encourage excellence in science, mathematics, and engineering. MIT’s Schools of Engineering and Science are eligible to nominate up to two students each who are in the sophomore or junior class during the 2022-23 academic year. To qualify, students must be a US citizen or Permanent resident, both exhibit outstanding potential and intend to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or those engineering disciplines that contribute significantly to the technological advances of the United States.

Sophomore scholarship recipients will be eligible for two years of scholarship support and junior scholarship recipients will be eligible for one year of scholarship support. The award covers eligible expenses up to a maximum of $7,500 per academic year.

The Biology department can submit one nomination to the Dean’s office for consideration. If you would like to apply, please contact your advisor or UROP faculty supervisor. The following information is due in the Biology Education office, send to me stonej at mit.edu<mailto:stonej at mit.edu>, for the prescreening process by Tuesday, November 8th:

  *   CV of nominee;
  * Essay written by the nominee (as specified in the attached guidelines)
  *   A supporting statement from the Undergraduate Officer, Professor, Faculty Advisor, or other appropriate person, describing the attributes of the nominee;
  * Names of two additional faculty recommenders. The additional recommendation letters are not required for the prescreening process and will be requested if the student is selected.
  * If citizenship status is permanent resident, a copy of the student's Permanent Resident Card and a letter of intent to become a U.S. Citizen.

The supporting statement from your faculty mentor or advisor should be sent directly to me. If you are planning to apply, please send your CV and essay to me. You do not need to request an official MIT transcript; we will obtain a copy of your unofficial transcript.

Regards,

Josh
