I am writing to make you aware of a unit-hour self-reporting tool I’ve created called Do Less Better (DLB)<https://pripyat.mit.edu/DLB/>. This will give you the opportunity to track hours spent on classwork on a weekly basis throughout the semester, and to see real-time, anonymized, aggregate data about each course which you are taking. Instructors can also request access to anonymized, aggregate data for their subjects.

Ultimately, I hope that the app can help us calibrate published unit-hours (expectations) with the actual time taken by classes (reality), and keep course workloads reasonable through real-time data.

DLB is being more widely tested this spring, after beta testing last fall. All current students will be able to use it securely, using MIT certificate authentication. It has been presented to the Committee on Curricula (CoC), which will review the aggregate data at the end of Spring 2021 to decide if and how DLB may be useful to the CoC in fulfilling its duties.

Information about privacy and data usage, as well as answers to other frequently asked questions, can be found on the DLB<https://pripyat.mit.edu/DLB/> welcome screen<https://pripyat.mit.edu/DLB/>.

I hope you will be able to use DLB to track the time spent on your courses, and to help keep class workloads reasonable. And please feel free to request new features, or report bugs - there is a bug/feature reporting tool on DLB as well.

Cheers,
-Mike
