Subject: Teach for Cascade 2021!

We’re Hilary and Matt, members of the MIT Educational Studies Program. We are currently looking for teachers for Cascade, a free educational program run by MIT students aimed at providing enrichment opportunities to underserved high-schoolers in the Boston area. Cascade will run on Saturdays from October 9 through November 6, and we’ve extended our application deadline to August 27th.
This would be a great opportunity for your department to get involved in local outreach to underserved students! Could you please forward the teaching opportunity below to Biology undergraduate and graduate students? Thank you!
Best,
Hilary and Matt

tl;dr:

  * Teach underserved 9-11th graders at Cascade every Saturday (10:30 AM - 4 PM EDT) from Oct. 9th through Nov. 6th.
  * Apply to be a teacher at esp.mit.edu/cascade21teachers<https://esp.mit.edu/cascade21teachers> by Friday, August 27th.
  * Format (virtual/in-person) to be decided; you can apply to teach virtual only, in-person only, or both!
Cascade is our fall program that aims to instill a love of learning in underserved ninth, tenth, and eleventh-grade students from Greater Boston-area schools and community centers, many of whom do not have access to other educational enrichment opportunities. This year, Cascade will run 10:30 AM - 4 PM EDT on Saturdays from October 9th to November 6th (5 weekends), with classes lasting 1 or 1.5 hours. Format (virtual, in-person, hybrid) is still dependent on MIT’s emerging fall policies - you can specify in the application which formats work for you.
Do you want to inspire underserved students to love to learn and closely interact with them to build a supportive community? We’re looking for teachers to lead 1 or 1.5 hour classes that emphasize engaging activities, discussions, or problem-solving, and fun! Past classes have included “Crime Scene Investigation”, “Games, Numbers, and How to Win”, and “Mind-Mancing: How to Hack a Human Being.”
Classes are typically taught by pairs or small teams of teachers, so we especially encourage partnering with your friends or colleagues to co-teach a class. This year in particular, we are looking for discrete classes, where each class fits a theme but does not require attending previous sessions, in addition to continuous classes that do build off material from past sessions (traditional classes). Students with less flexible schedules will still be able to participate in Cascade even if they cannot attend each week, so we encourage considering whether your class can support this!
Sign up to teach at: esp.mit.edu/cascade21teachers<https://esp.mit.edu/cascade21teachers> by August 27th (Friday)! We will contact selected applicants after their application is submitted to schedule a 30-minute informal interview. Email us with any questions at cascade at mit.edu<mailto:cascade at mit.edu>.
Best,
Hilary and Matt
