Dear colleagues,
We are delighted to share the news that Jackie Lees has been named associate dean in the School of Science, where she – together with Rebecca Saxe of Brain and Cognitive Sciences – will contribute to the School’s diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) activities. Jackie will also develop and implement mentoring and other career-development programs to support the entire School of Science community.
As many of you know, Jackie has performed tremendous service to the department and to Koch Institute. Her many contributions include:
* Associate Director of KI
* Associate Department Head
* Director of MIT Stem Cell Initiative
* Overseeing all KI core facilities
* Member of the executive committee of the BioMIcro Center
· Member of the graduate committee for many many years, where she has helped shape new policies and has been deeply involved in admissions, recruitment, and interviews
· MD-PhD liaison and coordinator, connecting with HMS and serving as advisor to all incoming MD-PhD students
* Co-taught summer course for MSRP for five years
* Member of the Faculty DEI Committee
* Co-chair of the first iteration of the DEI committee with Iain
* Informal mentor to countless grad students, postdocs, and junior faculty
And the list goes on! Jackie will be winding down several of these activities (although she will remain associate department head, likely until the end of the year) to create some bandwidth for her new role, in which she will be able to continue many of these contributions at the School level.
Please join us in congratulating and thanking Jackie for her willingness, once again, to step up and take on this important new role as associate dean.
With warm regards,
Alan and Matt

Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to let you know that Jackie Lees and Rebecca Saxe will serve as associate deans in the School of Science effective immediately. They will both contribute to the school’s diversity, equity, inclusion and justice (DEIJ) activities, as well as develop and implement mentoring and other career-development programs to support the community.
Jackie is the Virginia & D.K. Ludwig Professor for Cancer Research and is currently the associate director of the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, as well as an associate department head and professor in biology at MIT. Rebecca is the John W. Jarve (1978) Professor in Brain and Cognitive Sciences and the associate head in her department; she is also an associate investigator in the McGovern Institute for Brain Research.
As many of you know from first-hand experience, Jackie and Rebecca bring years of DEIJ and mentorship experience to bear on our shared goal for the expansion of school-level initiatives. Rebecca and Jackie will also work closely with Kuheli Dutt, our newly hired assistant dean for diversity, equity, and inclusion, and the other members of Science Council, on strategy and programming.
A formal announcement will be posted to MIT News later today.
I’m so grateful that Rebecca and Jackie have agreed to take on these new roles. I’m super excited to work with these outstanding thought partners as we tackle the many puzzles that I come across as dean.
All my best,
Nergis
