About the Speaker
Dr. James Simons, SB ’58

MIT alumnus James (“Jim”) Simons is an eminent mathematician, investor, and philanthropist. Among other major contributions to geometry and topology, Simons discovered the Chern-Simons invariants, now extensively used in theoretical physics, string theory, and geometry. He was awarded the AMS Oswald Veblen Prize in Geometry.

He is the founder of the world’s second largest hedge fund Renaissance Technologies, where he served as CEO for over 30 years before becoming board chair. Simons also founded the Simons Foundation, an organization dedicated to advancing research of mathematics and the basic sciences, and Math for America, a nonprofit organization helping to significantly improve math education in public schools.

About the UMA<http://web.mit.edu/uma/www/>

The MIT Undergraduate Mathematics Association (UMA) is the official math club of MIT. Our primary goal is to serve all MIT students interested in math by fostering community engagement, holding events, and carrying out initiatives to improve the student experience. Ongoing efforts include talks by professors, postdocs, and fellow students, weekly social game nights, compilation of academic and career resources, and other steps including cross-organizational collaboration to make mathematics more accessible and fascinating at MIT.
