The History Faculty is soliciting nominations for the 2020 History Undergraduate Writing Prizes, honoring excellence in historical research and writing. The three awards of $300 each honor MIT historians John W. Dower, Pauline Maier, and Bruce Mazlish.
Eligibility:
MIT undergraduate students and non-MIT students who have taken a 21H subject in 2019-20 taught by an MIT History Faculty member may submit entries.
Requirements:
This academic year we have decided to open the contest to both traditional written submissions and alternative formats, including video-recorded speeches and presentations, web sites, digital maps, and social media projects (e.g., extended Twitter threads).
Submissions from non-21H subjects are not eligible unless the instructor has a joint appointment with the MIT History Faculty.
Papers should be roughly 10 pages or more, double-spaced.
Video and audio recordings should be roughly 15-20 minutes or more in length.
Other formats should reflect an equivalent investment of effort; the committee will apply these criteria flexibly in the interests of including the largest possible number and variety of submissions.
All submissions must exclude your name, subject number, subject title, and image (if submitting a visual project).
How to apply:
Send completed entry form<http://history.mit.edu/sites/default/files/images/2016%20History%20Prize%20Entry%20Form-6_2.pdf> and paper as a PDF file to mjpepin at mit.edu<mailto:mjpepin at MIT.EDU>
Due date:
Monday, May 25, 2020, 11:59pm, EST. No late entries accepted.
Evaluation Criteria:
A History Faculty committe will evaluate entries based on excellence in historical analysis, research, and writing.
Winners will be notified by email and their names will appear on the history website by June 15, 2020.
