Dear colleagues,

I’m writing to share the disappointing news that Ibrahim Cissé will be leaving our department and MIT. Ibrahim has accepted a position at CalTech.

Ibrahim, whose primary faculty appointment is in Physics, earned tenure earlier this year and formally became a joint faculty member in Biology. But, Ibrahim’s home has been Building 68 since he started at MIT in 2014. In his 6 short years at MIT, he used and developed techniques of super-resolution microscopy of living cells and has made fundamental contributions to our understanding of gene expression in vivo. He was has received numerous grants and awards, including the NIH New Innovator Award and the Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Biomedical Science. He has been a positive force in our department and at MIT, forging many collaborations, always willing to help with microscopy and to talk science. He has been a mainstay at the Building 68 retreat, always engaging with students, staff and faculty colleagues alike.

We will miss Ibrahim's infectious enthusiasm for and innovative approach to science, his distinctive laugh, and his perpetual smile and positive attitude. Please join me in wishing Ibrahim well as he begins the transition to CalTech and Los Angeles.

Alan
