Subject: Fall Undergraduate Teaching Opportunity (UTOP) with MIT Full STEAM Ahead

We have an opportunity through the Experiential Learning Office (ELO)<https://elo.mit.edu/> for MIT students to participate in a 10 week online mentoring program for high school students. The stipend for the semester is $1,900. We have opportunities for mentors, curriculum developers, and localization specialists.

If you would please share the opportunity below with your group, we would really appreciate it!

Full STEAM Ahead Fall Programs

Full STEAM Ahead (FSA)<https://fullsteam.mit.edu/> is a community outreach initiative to provide research-based hands-on learning opportunities for K-12 students. The initiative was launched last spring to support parents, teachers and students during the early days of COVID-19 by providing access to high-quality educational materials. Our vision is to create a global community of learners (children, teachers, and parents) who can share ideas, ask and answer questions, and engage in STEAM in meaningful ways even as they’re forced to stay home. In July, we launched an online summer program for middle schoolers in Massachusetts focused on hands-on learning and projects.

Starting in September 2020, our new programs, The Full STEAM Ahead Immersion Program (Spain version) and Full STEAM Ahead into Fall program (Massachusetts version), will offer up to 10 weeks of online project-based learning activities for a cohort of around 600 Spanish high school juniors and 300 local Massachusetts high school students with the goal of providing rich STEAM experiences. At the beginning of each week, a new set of learning activities will be released to students with self-guided materials and small group mentor check-ins throughout the week, culminating in a program check-in and showcase at the end of each week.

We currently need support in three areas:

  * Mentors: As our summer program demonstrated, MIT students are amazing mentors. As a mentor, MIT students will work with smaller groups of about 10 students each and will provide their group with mentorship and project support.
  * Curricular Development: The focus of this role would be on developing new materials or resources - videos, activities, curriculum, etc. Some of this may be done as design research, working with local students and teachers, or using an iterative play testing model. Resources developed this fall would be used during IAP or spring semester programs. In addition, developers will help the team create an online/social media presence and build and sustain a community of learners at Full STEAM Ahead.
  * Localization: We have had requests for FSA materials in other languages including Spanish and Haitian Creole from our local partners. We are looking for Spanish- and Creole-fluent MIT students who can work on the localization of FSA materials, which involves translation, customization of resources, and the development of new ones for the Spanish- or Creole-speaking students. These materials could be used to enable local ELL students to access the program curriculum during the Spring semester.

If you are interested in any of these opportunities, please contact Kirky DeLong (kirky at mit.edu<mailto:kirky at mit.edu>).

Thank you!
